  • I think my wife may be a drug dealer; we both picked up phones in different rooms in the house the other day, she said "Hello?" and a man said "Has that dope gone yet?"

I think, way back when, it was used to describe the coating used on the fabric of old aeroplanes.

Yep, I remember making remore-controlled aircraft and using this stuff called dope on the paper covering the wings and fuselage to stiffen the paper. It was some kind of resin, IIRC.

It was originally a hip hop term from the early 80s onwards.

Rubbish Jints......it was used as another word for puff way back in the early 70's.
Also a slang word going way way back to the 50's meaning what's the info on something or what's the latest news.
Example......"Hello mate, what's the latest dope on Charltons line up tomorrow night?"
  • The big question is is dope something that is green or something that is brown?

Depends who is saying it and how.

If you said dope fiend I would assume you were talking about a smack head
  • One of the seven dwarves, no question.
The OP reminds me of that windscreen character that used to be on here and was sold to ITV.

Dictionary.com gives as one of it's many definitions this: Informal. a stupid or unresponsive person.

That is what I've always understood the word to mean.

Sure, it's been used to refer to drugs since the 19th century - opium first, cannabis later. It made the leap to an adjective meaning good or excellent in the 80s which is what the OP was referring to

Oh, it's also slang for drugs, or it was. Usually weed, but I've seen it used for all drugs.

If we're gonna play "translate the '90s slang game" then I'm gonna look like the coolest kid on CL.

OK, what is meant by "Chinny reck-on"?
Well that didn't last long, did it?
