Assuming Stokes comes back at some point (but probably not this series), whilst it absolutely helps the balance of our side, assuming Vince is the one dropped (and we don't leave Cook out too), it actually creates a bit of a problem.
Presumably Malan will go up to 3 (assuming that Root won't do) but that will mean that the top 3 are all left handers, 5 of the top 7 will be so inclined and we'd have 7 of them in the side - would have to be some sort of record!
As Stoneman seems to have convinced that he can score runs at Test level, then Cook may well come under pressure, so, for next season, maybe the line up will be.. Hameed,Stoneman,Malan,Root,Bairstow,Stokes,Ali,Foakes,Woakes,Broad, jimmy.
I like that line up.
I would actually seriously consider Cook at 3 if he wants to carry on. Give Root protection at 4 and allow 2 relatively young openers to form a partnership. Tbh everyone else has failed at 3 so would be a good short term fix
In all seriousness though - very, very well batted Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow. I'm glad to see that the off-field shenanigans don't seem to have had an effect in the build-up to this Test.
Also, thoughts with Straussy, whose wife was just diagnosed with cancer.
I am going to revise my series prediction from 5-0 to 4-0
Ermmmm.....that is impossible of course.
In case it wasn't glaringly obvious, I meant to Australia!
The series cannot end 4-0. It would have to be either 5-0, 4-1 or 4-0-1 (with a drawn game)......if you have 5 games you must have 5 results not 4. So there!

Best wishes to Mrs Strauss.
I think that the off-field antics may actually have brought them together. What happened with Bairstow and Duckett, from what I hear, would not even have got a mention had we not the world witnessed the Stokes incident.
Even Anderson, who had the drink poured over him, has said that Duckett wasn't the only one to partake in doing so and that it was nothing more than lads having a bit of fun. The problem and stupidity of the situation was that the world and its media were always going to be watching and waiting to make the most of anything, however small, which is why the ECB felt that they had to react by throwing the book at Duckett.

You don't count draws in Cricket the same way as football. So, it can be 4-0 , but it cant be 4-1-0. So, possible options are 5-0,4-0,4-1,3-0,3-2,3-1 etc.

That's not the case - a drawn match would still make the series result 4-0

Hope not because I've backed 2-2 and there's never been a 2-2-1 option!
Here are all England's results from which you can see in brackets the number of matches in those
Rain forecast on Sunday and Monday, so this may end up a draw.
This is Perth, not Manchester. Rain may delay it a bit but not a whole days play. I still expect a mini collapse tomorrow morning & by lunch will be 8 or 9 down - don't think we'll get much over 400.

Its a different situation now, coz we finally have gone through the 2nd new ball with a bir of batting left. These 2 have already wiped 9 overs off it, so, if we can keep to losing max of 1 wicket after 1 hour tomorrow, then their quicks will have bowled a lot of overs and have no new ball left. It all depends if Lyon can stem the flow.

Yes, it can go either way tomorrow
a) One of the batsman gets out early, the Aussie quicks get another one quickly, and rip through our batting as we struggle to 380 b) The batsmen continue onwards to lunch, with just 1 down. With the ball soft, Moeen, Woakes and Overton smash the ball around as the Aussie attack tires. Steve Smith wastes his final review and gets baited by the Barmy Army for the rest of the day, before bursting into tears
England has had its best day batting of the series so far - feint praise indeed. For this to count for anything, they have to follow it up with at least one more decent session of batting, immediately followed by two good sessions in the field. If Aus is better off than 250 behind with 5 wickets down at c.o.p. Friday then England won't win. England had plenty of good fortune today, catches went down, Smith ludicrously burned a review, and for once Eng made it count. More fortune will be needed first thing if Malan & Bairstow are to see off the first hour and soften up the new ball. If that doesn't come Moeen and the tail can be expected to fold like a pack of cards. If England bowls twice as well as the first innings in the 2nd test Aus will be comfortably approaching parity by c.o.p. For DM and JB's efforts to bear fruit then Broad and Anderson have to be back on it plus at least one other has to come to the party. PITCH THE BALL UP FFS!! Any more of that retarded half track buffet bowling we see so much of will see the urn returned to AUS by Sunday lunchtime latest. One big century partnership does not a test win make - far less save a series.
Well I feared the worst last night when I went to bed with England 3 down and Stoneman getting hit left right and centre with the short stuff, but a pleasant surprise to wake up and see they’ve finally put on a proper big partnership. This pitch is a scoring wicket though so I don’t think we’re any better than par right now and I can see those quicks of theirs rattling through our tail so this pair plus Moeen need to add another 100 plus to keep us in it and I think we really need a total more like 500 as our seamers do not have the pace to give their bats much trouble on this track. Need a big score to build some pressure.

Leave Golfie alone. I prefer my financial advisor to have a healthy dose of realism about him. Who wants to get pointed towards Bitcoin or some other no hope investment by a mindlessly optimistic dreamer ;-)
Because of the scoring speed , anything under 450 could spell disaster for England, and could mean us being 150 behind going into our second innings on Day 4.

Doesn’t take much to confuse me nowadays......In fact over the last six months or so I have noticeably deteriorated in my speed of thought and memory as well as not being able to speak as concisely and fluently as I once did, getting old is fucking horrible. That’s life I guess but it’s very hard to come to terms with.
