Not confirmed on any news channel I can find. Let's hope not. Possibly my favourite musician of all time. Still played the most memorable shows I have ever seen.
Terrible news. Tom Petty was one of those artists that a lot of people might initially struggle to name more than one or two songs but yet when you say, "what about..." they realise what a fabulous back catalogue of work there was behind him.
I saw Tom and the Heartbreakers back in the mid 80's supporting a Dylan tour - about the time that Southern Accents came out, which is still one of my favourite albums. It was at the old Wembley Conference Centre, a small venue - Roger McGuinn was the warm-up, Tom then played for about 90 minutes, then Dylan for 60 minutes with the Heartbreakers backing. Certainly one of my favourite ever concerts.
The Wilburys were great also.
RIP Tom
Edit: Just double checked and apparently it was Wembley Arena. It must have been set for half the arena as I clearly remember it being quite compact - but it was 30 years ago and I'm a very old man now!!

My wife has shed a few tears tonight.

What's this all about? Guessing this is a false rumour that he is still alive?
