Anyone cleared their loft lately ?

At the age of 80 I am biting the bullet and clearing our loft for the first time this century. My favourite find so far has been my LP's from my early twenties and thirties, Chris Barbers Jazz Band, The Outlaws, Johnny Johnson and his Bandwagon ( whatever happened to them ? ), Davey Arthur and the Furies, etc. It's a treasure trove of memories, my old golf clubs, family photos, what seems like dozens of duvets, give it a try, I'm like a new man ( to which my wife sighed ' if only '. )

Yes, first time since moving here. Not to many surprises, two Samsung soundbars and a Onkyo amp, tried to sell them but got some stupidly low offers. So gave them away to a under 10s football club to raffle, would rather give it away for free than let someone make money out of me. Got a lovely letter signed by the youngsters and I'm sponsoring their training kit next year, feels good. :)

I had a nose around ours when we first moved in. One of the previous occupants must have been a TV engineer, founds loads of old boxes of valves and a couple of Murphy TV metal signs. Also found an original Austin Healy Sprite owners manual.

Probably worth a few quid, ask nicely on here they'll advise what you should do with them and what you should wear while doing so. ;)

I'm in the slow process of looking at what's lurking in mine. I moved in 41 years ago and I've accumulated a lot of old shit. I'm quite expecting a couple of Japanese soldiers who havnt surrendered yet living up there.

Yes, when my father-in-law passed away in May, me and my brother-in-law emptied my mother-in-laws loft for her, as well as the garage and it had never been cleared out since they moved in during the late 60s.

Have never seen so much sh*t, as well as antique furniture, vinyl records that we knew he had but not to the extend of numbers, amplifiers, speakers, tuners, ridiculous.

We filled 2 skips with rubbish, a whole load of stuff went to a museum and the vinyls are in the process of being sold off.

Also cleared out our loft at the end of last year ahead of our major building works as we knew we had a lot of stuff going up there temporarily.

The only thing we found from the previous owner was a box of old porn mags going back to the 80s.

What did you do with the artistic magazines? I might have a friend who might be interested.

On a serious note putting stuff in the loft is a big mistake. It’s gets left up there for years and years you die and your family have the unenviable job of dumping the lot.

He's 80, the 'artistic magazines' are more likely to be erotic lithographs :-)
  • I found a Stradivarius and a Rembrandt , unfortunately Stradivarius couldn't paint and Rembrandt made terrible violins. One of the great Tommy Cooper's.

Is "clearing the loft" a euphemism for some wierd sexual practise?

If its not, theres no way im going up there, small children have been sent up and never returned.

I was like an old porn mag many years ago, plenty of hair, nowadays I’m like a clip from Redtube, bald.

Only got a narrow loft and difficult to navigate, but ours is literally jam packed with boxes of my wife's old Charlton programmes over the decades, her photo albums, her boxes of old VHS videos and Christmas decorations.

None of which I'm allowed to chuck out. Even though we haven't had a VHS player for 15 years.

Surprised out ceiling hasn't given way to be honest

when I moved from my previous house in Eltham to Welling 10 years ago I literally transferred the old loft to the new loft, only last year did I finally empty it when we had the loft conversion done. At the time I literally just dumped it all in the garage but since then have gone through the garage and dumped hoardes of crap....I was of the opinion that if I didn't know what was in each box then I can't be missing it. Far too many old crap plastic football trophies from years gone by.

can actually get into my garage now

my wife's a hoarder whereas I'm of the opinion if I have not used something for a few years then I obviously don't need it. Our small box room containing my wife's craft stuff also contains a single pine bed with a bed that slides out from under. I'm told we have to keep it in case someone wants to stay over. We have been in the house six years and no-one has done so yet in that bed (friends stay in the guest double) so what is the point of keeping it?
  • Had a nose round ours when we first moved here (2010). Nothing of any interest found, then a year or so later whilst laying some new insulation came across a couple of 1950's 'porn' mags.

I've lived in my home for over five years and I have yet to even look into the loft. Ceiling is very high and my ladder won't reach. There could be a hermit living in there for all I know!

Not being able to use it, and with very little other storage space, means my hoarding days are long gone (excluding the boxes of 'treasure' that I've got stored in my Dad's loft!).
  • i once found an old board game when I was younger. me and my sister started to play it the next day. strange game as the pieces on the board moved by themselves. after a few rolls of the dice shit really did hit the fan. we had a whole load of wild animals going through our living room, Robin Williams dressed as Tarzan popped in for a bit and I turned into a chimp. wait. no. that wasn't me. that's was the film Jumanji.

if anything it proves we are proper Charlton, they're not hidden away in the loft, they are taking pride of place in the front room.
  • On a similar vein, when moving into a new house and the time comes to pull up the carpets, I always look at the newspapers under neath.

Invariably, on the sports pages, Charlton have lost.

My children now live in the loft and watch the model trains running around the house from the convenience of the loft hatch
I tell them it’s a health and safety thing. I don’t want them treading on a carriage.
On a more serious note, our loft is mostly full of stuff we never use.
