  • My mate bought a house in Cheshire, it previously belonged to a Charlton fan who had painted the small toilet room top to bottom in red! I paid them a visit and his wife said she was pleased I'd come up as they could now repaint the loo.
  • Some iffy areas there, Ashton is not bad and Prestwich is nice and has a huge Jewish community.

To the south of Manchester there is Rusholme, Withington and Levenshulme that are vibrant areas packed full of bars and restaurants while still being fairly affordable. Slightly further out you will find Didsbury and Cheadle, again both have plenty of good restaurants and bars but property prices will start creeping up.

Thanks, seem to see real mixed reviews about all of them, Prestwich is the only one that seems to get consistently praised. Will take a look at those others mentioned, still at a very preliminary stage.
  • Have a look in Urmston....another area 'on the up'....my brother bought there after renting in Didsbury...short tram into the city, a pretty good high street with numerous bars/restaurants...
  • Thought Didsbury was v expensive a out 15 years ago from what i remember people telling me. Never considered moving that far wet, cold and dark myself

We had an office in Prestwich for 18 months so I had cause to be there a handful of times and stayed over locally. This was in the last year or so. I thought it had a really nice feel to it, the tram was a reliable service into the city and elsewhere and generally Mancunians are good people.

    Good luck!

My wife is from a megacity so has been desperate to move to a biggish city for some time now as we currently live in a medium sized town. London would obviously be ideal but is just impossible to afford for anyone our age (late 20s). There are some really expensive areas of Manchester like Didbsury, Altrincham etc but there's also some really affordable (relative to the south of the country) areas.

Thanks, pleased to hear that. Prestwich definitely sounds like a good initial top choice.

As the name suggests, based in Wigan having moved from Bexleyheath 3 years ago. Wigans part of Greater Manchester so has good links to the city, but nearby, you've got Newton-le-Willows, Tyldesley, Irlam, Culceth... All nice places that are outside the city itself.
  • Yes, I would avoid Altrincham if price is an issue, lovely town with excellent transport, very vibrant town centre since they redeveloped the market hall. But the single sex grammar schools, influx of Hongkong chinese and other factors have led to very high house prices. A few weeks ago parking up my 8 year old Vauxhall Astra in Sainsbury's car park I spotted a Bentley coupe, an Aston Martin and a Lambourgini !! I wish they would f**k off to Waitrose.

We would be contributing to the Hong Kong influx I'm afraid. I don't doubt it's a great area, hence the price and demand but just well out of our budget.
