Glad they won , but you can not call that a convincing win, even with two goals. Have a feeling since the new year the team have gone off the boil, lets hope the players returning from injury give them a boost.
a positive is Whitehouse, what a keeper.1 -
I don’t want to take anything away from Karen or the team, but I think it was said early in the season that we are the worst best team in the league you’ll ever see.Kap10 said:
First time I have seen us this season. I mean how are we top and how are teams not beating us!! They have done fantastically well. Can't say I would enjoy this every week. If Forest had been any good in front of goal they would not have lost this.blackheathaddick said:It's the first time I've watched a game live rather than just highlights and it's been interesting. I say this all as a coach of girl's football. There are lots of misplaced passes and mis controls. Forest look a lot more comfortable with the ball. We look like the poorer team yet we are somehow 2-0 up and I'm wondering whether this is just normal.
My plan to be at the Valley next week has just been scuppered but I do plan to get to a gsme or two between now and the end of the season.
I hope that the Board have a budget for the WSL Prem.
Right now though, it doesn’t matter. Results matter. But if we do go up, this squad will need some serious upgrades in the summer, because as it stands, this squad will be relegated by Christmas.1 -
Honestly, after the first 5 or so games this season when it became clear this was going to be a thing the stress has massively reduced. We seem to just always score exactly enough goals. Mostly we score and don't concede. If we do concede we score 2 somehow. I actually felt perfectly calm from 2-0 onwards because I've seen us do exactly this 10+ times this season. The defence stands strong and if a shot does get past them old Sophie Twelve Arms bats it away. Despite us never having the ball we're incredibly clinical when we do create a chance or we win a free kick for Hutton to force a goal. It's not beautiful football but it's successful, which is the best kind of football. To be honest I find it a stress relief every Sunday after watching the men's team blunder to whatever result they can earlier in the weekblackheathaddick said:I am amazed we won that 2-0. I don't think my blood pressure could handle watching that every week chasing promotion9 -
I agree, my comments were not to take away anything from Karen and her team. Trying to not get ahead of us, but wondering how full the Valley will be for Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City ... damn I just jinxed itlordromford said:

I'd love to bring my girl's teams down to watch a few games. Difficult to organise as we all play the same day. Alas as I've complained before the club do nothing to reach out into Kent to gain additional support, and it looks like we are going to become a sister club to LCL instead who have been considerably more engaged when I've reached out to them!0
-
We know Karen Hills loves an unchanged team, but I wonder if the returns of Ellie Mason and Kiera Skeels will lead to any line-up changes for Durham at home next week. Mason at left-back and Newsham at right-back would give us more balance, and although Lucia Lobato been mostly pretty good since coming in for Skeels, she had one moment today where she could feasibly have been sent off as the last defender, and having the captain back would be a big boost.
Up front, I've resigned myself to the fact that Amalie Thestrup will start every game come what may, despite offering next to nothing. There was one nice flick early in the second half today, but a couple of minutes later she was back on form being flagged for offside. I think Emma Bissell has every right to feel a bit cheesed off that she's getting very little game time - it could be that she's ended up in the Michelle Agyemang position of being pigeon-holed in Karen's mind as a game-changer off the bench, so will only come on if we need to score.
And as others have said, if Sophie Whitehouse doesn't win Player of the Year then there needs to be some kind of inquiry. That diving save from the late volley was absolutely sensational.2 -
Just win games.
Four more should be enough, five certainly will be.3 -
Karen prefers to get one or two goals and then defend. Just hope it works for the rest of the season and it doesn't come down to goal difference.
The former General Manager Louise McGinn did so much work with local schools and clubs. Unfortunately she was made to re-apply for her job with an impossible job specification. She resigned instead.
Jemma White was appointed as Head of Women's Football but she doesn't seem to be interested in developing Louise's work.1 -
You can really see the EPL budgets filter down into the physicality & technical ability of the players for teams like Forest, Newcastle, etc. They are able to pick up lower end WSL quality players and coaches, practice lovely triangles and rotations but they still can't match our organisation, desire and sheer work ethic. The comparison between league table and squad budget should make at least half the teams in this division feel ashamed. If we win promotion to the WSL it will be a miraculous victory for proper underdog football (plus Sophie Whitehouse probably being the best player, pound for pound, in the division.) UTA3

I reached out directly to Jemma White and she didn't even have the courtesy to respond.0

It’s disappointing to read these posts.blackheathaddick said:I reached out directly to Jemma White and she didn't even have the courtesy to respond. Are the club aware that fans are unhappy about this?Has it been brought up in any fans forum? Are CAST on it? Or any other fan groups?
Apologies for my ignorance but I support from afar and wasn’t aware of these issues.0 -
I'm sure if we go up there will be a lot of investment into the squad. This board seems to want the women's team to thrive, and with the extra money in the WSL and the expansion of the league, they'll want to stay and become established in it ASAP2

Jemma White was supposed to have a discussion with Richard Wiseman of CAST on Zoom soon after she arrived at Charlton. She didn't log on.lordromford said:Crusty54 said:

I understand a budget has been agreed if promotion is achieved. It was mentioned in the recent session with the directors.sam3110 said:I'm sure if we go up there will be a lot of investment into the squad. Massive missed opportunity, and dissapointing to hear if the club aren't engaging with schools and clubs for younger ages.
Living in Suffolk, Ipswich are making a real effort. They're across a lot of the teams, boys and girls, starting even as young as my daughters under 7's (5-7 year olds) team. They send a coach once a week to her primary school to put on classes as well, and they don't even have any competition in the area. Seems like a no brainer to try and get involved and be engaging when you're potentially having to fight against other sides for interest.3 -
I'm not in the know at all, so it's sad to read these comments about our relative lack of engagement with schools etc. The club have posted videos on social media of a few of the players going into local schools, but by the sounds of it we're not doing much more than that, which is poor.
As @DyerConsequences is speaking of Ipswich: they're off the bottom after beating Portsmouth 2-1 away today. I missed that they've signed our old friend Princess Ademiluyi on loan, and they've started to pick up now after finding the going really tough earlier in the season. Our game there on 18 February will be really tough.
Anyway, highlights from today (bizarrely not including the incredible diving save from Whitehouse in added time):

I want our women side to draw big attendance number- just so it doesn't end up like last time.As I said before a cup would be nice this season, but the league (or promotion is the big prize). Not only does the team get to play as stadiums, once played by the men, such as Brisbane Road, Chigwell Construction Stadium, Goodison Park, Emirates Stadium (probably the biggest out of the definite away games in the WSL*), but Russo, James,Hampton, Lehmann will come to the Valley.I am hoping for at least an average of 5k (the attendance for the worst men (league) games), which would be on par with Bristol City. Then the women team can press on.

Seems like a no brainer to try and get involved and be engaging when you're potentially having to fight against other sides for interest.I'm Head of Girl's football at my club in Medway (Medway Town Pinx). I run the oldest girl's team as well (U14). We have 8 girls teams now, with many more girls taking their first steps into football at our weekly Girls Development Centre, which is totally free, and all run by volunteers. We have Chatham Town on our doorstep who are on a good FA cup run, but are 4th tier. Our club also view them as a bit of a local rival, and my U14s actually faced them in the league this season, so it's not a club we'd particularly be looking to connect with.LCL are building a massive training centre 20 minutes away although play their games at Bromley. They are probably the more logical larger club to look to connect with, but I'm in charge and as a Charlton fan I really wanted it to be Charlton. It's just a shame. I've been pushing this with different people for the last 4 years. I actually got a reply from Saangaard in the early days and he directed me to other people but again once it reached the "right" people in the club it just didn't happen.I have seen highlights of the games at the Valley and it looks desparately empty but nobody seems to be taking the initiative when the girl's game is rocketing (post England success) to build the support. Scouting on the girl's side locally I think is in better shape although again LCL may be stealing a march here. This is what LCL and us are looking at.

Sophie Whitehouse won save of the month for January. Should win again for February.6
-
If we go up which is looking more than possible, we absolutely need to keep hold of Whitehouse. I would imagine WSL clubs have noticed her.7

Huge congratulations to Charlotte Newsham who has been called up to the Scotland squad7

The stats are fairly clear... she's the best in WSL2.MuttleyCAFC said:If we go up which is looking more than possible, we absolutely need to keep hold of Whitehouse. I would imagine WSL clubs have noticed her.0 -

Think all the club youtube channel is doing is copy & pasting the league highlightsEpsomAddick said:I'm not in the know at all, so it's sad to read these comments about our relative lack of engagement with schools etc. The club have posted videos on social media of a few of the players going into local schools, but by the sounds of it we're not doing much more than that, which is poor.

Do we find this a concern or doesn't it matter?0 -
Why would they do anything else? I doubt many WSL2 teams are curating their own highlights packages1
-
Yes they are clear but if you ignore them you can still see what they show by watching her play and comparing her to others. She would be very hard to replace without that being a negative step. It will be hard enough competing in the WSL without having to deal with that.SteveACS said:
