Klinsmann and Lineker both said after the France/Belgium game that the 3rd place play off is a pointless game, that no one wants to play in, and should be scrapped.
The 3rd and 4th place game should be removed it’s the most pointless fixture in football
More $$$$$ for FIFA is all that match is for.
Disagree. The world cup is a competition and the 3 best teams deserve a medal be it Bronze, Silver or Gold or should we remove all medals beneath gold in all competitions?
who were the 3rd place team in Euro 2016 ?
There isnt a Play Off match for the Euros
So was shared between Wales and Germany
And it should now be shared by England and Belgium. The players certainly don't want this game they just want to have a short holiday before the season starts.
My ghast has been flabbered in that people are suggestion we shouldn't take the 3rd and 4th place play off seriously. Winning this will give us our best finish since 66. OK, we are disapointed not to be in the final but it shows a terrible attitude if we don't see this for what it is - coming third out of the best 32 teams the continents of the world can offer.
Are you being serious???
Who gives a toss about coming third in a tournament. I cannot think of any other knock out cup competition in the world where this happens.
I think the players will be up for it. Other teams past maybe wouldn't have cared but I (perhaps stupidly) have a bit more faith that this group will want to put on a good performance to end a good campaign on a positive note.

Some of the fringe players might welcome an opportunity to stake a claim for future internationals.
a dose of reality .. after 6 games England's record is .. P6, W3, D1, L2 .. the wins .. last minute goal to beat Tunisia, a thrashing of a very poor Panama and a win over Sweden abetted by some Pickford saves at vital times .. drew v Columbia and won on penalties .. defeats .. our reserves v Belgium reserves and then outplayed by a better more experienced and more determined Croatia
we had no craft in midfield, other than Kane no viable goal threat, we were shot shy, shaky in defence and ran out of puff and ideas after half time, we were unable (except v Panama) to push home an advantage, to really go for the throat and finish off the other team, the two good teams we faced both beat us
it's been good to see that a nation pissed off with Brexit, Mayxit, Trumpxit, low wages, traffic jams, high prices and low expectations got behind the players. I hope that there will not be a nationwide collective breakdown after yesterday's defeat.
There were a lot of good individual performances, but any idea that this current England squad is on the brink of great things is well overcooked .. I hope I'm wrong
Im actually looking forward to watching the game on Saturday. After the stress of last night, just watch the likes of Alexander-Arnold, Loftus Cheek, Popey (maybe) in more of a relaxed / celebratory atmosphere.
I think it will be good for getting Croatia out the system.
I remember the Italia 90 game, with the players doing a mexican wave from both teams together, and exchanging gifts. Maybe we can give them back Roland
I agree with a good deal of what you say, but I think there's more cause for optimism in the medium term. This squad is decent, not fantastic, and there are clear deficiencies. But they are playing catch up with the successful youth teams who are the pipeline for England teams to come. As these players start to filter through to the national side, we can surely only improve.
It's been doing my head in trying to find the song the Ruskis have been playing in all the stadiums before kick off in every match. Finally found it today.
Song itself is not for everyone (not usually my taste either!) but in case anyone was hearing it and wondering like me... it's the first minute or so that I've heard come over the TV coverage at various matches.
Not only did he get the semi finalists right, he got every knockout game right except Uruguay vs Portugal and Spain vs Russia (which was only won on penalties), that's stunning
Knew Hisense and Vivo, maybe we can get Mr Wang to buy us? I'd prefer he dropped Atletico for us, but it's not a must so long as they push players our way to develop
I remember you once mentioned Hisense in a discussion about TV sets on here.
Wang is so wealthy. I'd be overjoyed if he (part-)bought us! Probably won't happen though....
Butland / Pope (half each) Alexander-Arnold Cahill Maguire Stones Delph Dier Loftus - Cheek Sterling Welbeck Kane (Rashford at half time)
Guessing in reality Jones will play instead of one of Stones / Maguire
Question, Have any England team in world cups or Euro's ever played all of their 22 or 23 squad players ?
Have any England team played any third place play-off matches? I suppose not? This match is different in that it's not important so maybe it will be a great opportunity for the fringe players to take part.

It's a rhetorical question Jessie, because this is only the second time England have played in a 3rd/4th match. The only other time was 1990 where we lost 2-1 to Italy. Peter Shilton was Captain and made a poor mistake for Italy's goal. I'm sure he was the only keeper that played in all the games for England.
The Euro's did away with the 3rd/4th match in 1980 so England didn't have the opportunity to play the squad players.
Would be good if Buckland and Pope could get 45 minutes each so all 23 players were involved in matches for the 1st and I would imagine the last time this situation will ever happen again.

Czechoslovakia came third in 1980. They beat Italy on penalties. But there wasn't a play off in 1996.

I also imagine Pochettino will be desperately hoping his Spurs players (on both sides) don't injure each other!

The ref for 3rd place on Saturday is Alireza Faghani from Iran.
