In truth I didn't have a pot to piss in so anything I won was swallowed by the debts of a losing night....but you don't remember them so they get blocked out of your mind.
Nowadays I rarely go to the pub so it's not an issue - but there are times when I am in a pub and stick £10 or £20 in a machine but rarely do I come out on top any more. The more modern problem is iPhone games.....I got immersed in one of those and spanked £500 about a year ago. Wouldn't have been a problem except for the fact my iTunes account has my wife's credit card attached. #schoolboyerror0 -

So many people bet online now, I have not been into a betting shop for years and as you say the people who used the machines, will have stopped going in, I can see many more bookmakers closing shops.1 -

WH say 4,500 jobs at risk - many will be relocated but there will, inevitably and sadly, be a high proportion that will be jobless. That said, a year ago WH said it would be 900 shops. I will be interested to see exactly how many they do end up closing.Henry Irving said:

Not quite FOBT- but might be a form of it. I use sky to bet now, every day they have a free spin on the megawheel, you tend to win every so often usually a few times a week 10p/50p scratchcard, freespins. I believe this is a new tactic to get people to use their SKYVEGAS, I am not sure if this is generic or whether they are clever enough to focus on certain people. Eg. I might win £2 on a slot from free spins and just play that and leave, other days for example payday I might put £20 as I can lose it. I have had a couple of decent results but still it must be the reason why they do these free spins/bonus to draw people in. I am semi-sensible and don't go over my £20 stop loss and only do it probably once or twice a month just as a bit of a gamble.
As a side note I do gamble every week on top of this, so not saying I am not a gambler just I have my limits I stick to (can afford to lose), like with football betting I will have a set limit weekly, when I get a good return I will withdraw a bit and whatever I leave on I will spin, literally this will be everyday finding any bet and on occasions I have done well on the other occasions I will wait until the next weekend to deposit (a few times this as gone on over a month without having to deposit)
Gambling is dangerous, everyone is different to what they can afford to lose and how much self control they have its an impossible task but to limit the machines so effectively it will take longer for people to lose x amount , or if someone only has 20 minutes to kill, I think this is a great step forward but in the grand scheme of things there is more that can be done.
Gambling adverts shouldn't be allowed imo, one of my mates has a mega gambling problem and will go without betting for a while and these pop up during any sporting event which can only encourage people to bet.

Zero sympathy for William Hill.
They posted a loss of £722m in 2018, due to a write-down of £883m which they put down to the effect of FOBT regulations on their betting shop business. In other words, they took the view that, despite the new rules, they could afford to write down the full cost and still show an underlying operating profit. So, they are repeating the news they had already forewarned in their report in March, alongside 2018's numbers.
I reserve my sympathy for the staff losing their jobs, a number of which will be in the least well-off parts of the coutry and not for William Hill, whose share price is up on the year, will continue to make an underlying profit of £5m a week; and now control more than one-third of the gambling industry in the United States.1 -

I am not sure how you can put cereal in the same sentence as alcohol , gambling and banks. I don't even think I need to argue that... I personally feel Alchohol definitely should also be on the banned adverts list, you don't see any cigarettes ones these days do you? I get with a lot of fast food and other advertised stuff is just as bad but its not quite the hook/pull when it comes to addiction, although you will obviously get the odd person no doubt in Mr Cereal.
On all social media forms all you see is online betting / deals, which again is just as bad. I suppose it is what it is, those not affected directly ignorance is bliss.
