Not criticising his reasoning at all, but I was wondering why he didn’t just quit at the time that it happened if it was that personal for him?

Otherwise it looks as though he just wanted to hang on for one final World Cup opportunity and deliberately picked a time after it to quit. Am I missing something here?

Think some of the criticism of Ozil and other ethnic minority players (particularly the Turkish Germans that met with Erdogan) after they were knocked out of the World Cup got quite nasty, hence this decision. I know the ethnicity of the Switzerland squad was a big talking point there, as I believe it was in Begium.

Seems to be something that’s happening more and more across Europe whereas in England there is no discussion at all about the ethnicity of the England team, it’s not even a talking point, which shows what a progressive and tolerant society we have compared to other places.
Tell that to Raheem. I heard some vile racist stuff aimed at him in the pub watching the World Cup.
Really? What pub were you in?

Someone said on a Chinese social media site that he watched Germany's first World Cup game at a public square in Berlin, wearing the German national team shirt with 'Ozil' on the back. And some Germans shouted 'Turkish shit' at him. He's Chinese. How ridiculous is that? I'm speechless.

turkish shit - whilst isn't very nice if you are portraying yourself to be freinds with an extremely vile person ( erdogan ) then what do you expect?, what about if jamie vardy got a photo with donald trump, im sure a lot of england fans would label him as certain things.

apart from comments about his performances for Arsenal the only abuse I've heard Ozil get from English fans is a chant that his eyes are offside.

But directing abuse at a foreigner wearing your country's football shirt while he has nothing to do with the nationality (Turkey) you hate is just different, isn't it? Those Germans insulted both the Chinese man and Ozil. The level of hostility is unbelievable.

They might not have known he was Chinese! Plenty of Chinese looking Germans, I'd assume, not everyone sees nationality as strictly as Chinese people do。

What? East Asian people look completely different to Germans I think? Anyway, the man posted that story on the social media site just to show the German people hate Ozil so much that they would abuse anyone with the slightest relation to the said player (and in this case just a name on the shirt).

By the way I like the full stop in your post. :joy:

James McLean is a player that makes no excuse for using the northern Irish fa youth system to his advantage then electing to play for the republic - me personally i find it a bit hypocritical - entitled to his thoughts on things but i think that is a bit cheeky.

happened a lot not so long ago when the bulk of the Irish team were made up from english lads with Irish parents.

the ozil thing i dont get personally because to me hes as German as i am english

players like shaquiri i do get as they were born in kosovo and until v recently they could not play for the country.

Ozil on the other hand could of elected to play for turkey if he wanted to.

Reminds me of secondary school when Ireland qualified for USA 94 and onwards. think the best/worst example was Clinton Morrison. Ridiculous
Why is Clinton Morrison the worst example?

I would definitely say Tony Cascarino would be the worse. I don't have a problem with people representing where their heritage is from especially if that's where they feel they are from. I don't like the people who play for a country because they can't get a game for the country they feel their from. I think if you represent the senior team in any game including friendlies then you should not be allowed to change countries.

I assume the Turkish shit comment was aimed at the name on the shirt, rather than implying the wearer was himself Turkish?

Not a problem anymore. All pubs seem to have at least 1 vegan lager. And then there's Guinness.

    Fair enough.

Just a hypothetical question (and probably a bit stupid). If I ever fly to London and go to the Valley for a home game, wearing a Charlton shirt with 'PARKER' on it, would there be shoutings of 'greedy bastard' aimed at me/my shirt?

Not that it is entirely equivalent to the story I just posted. And if I had to put a name on my Charlton shirt it would be Bent.

Just wear "I  Roland" on your shirt, and you're bound to get a warm welcome!

In terms of Parker, almost certainly not

At a club like Charlton, probably not, but it's possible.

What Clinton ‘ya get me blood’ Morrison. He’s got beamish running through his veins

To be fair Cascarino is a good shout as well. Then there’s me ol’ mucker Andy Townsend. Wales are making a good play in recent years to compete with them now though.

Perhaps but the racial epithet is despicable and any appeasement or accommodation of such ideology is unforgivable.
If a player's shit, tell him he's shit.
If he hangs out with loathsome murderous dictators, or comedy puppets; tell him he's a fool, and why.
Add a racial slur to your criticism and you are beneath contempt.

Cascarino didn't even have Irish Grandparents, Morrison did. I actually went to school with someone who spoke very like Morrison, the guy in question was born in Ireland and lived there till around 6-7. So not sure you can really define someone by the way they speak. Also the language you mention I would refer to as street (Can't stand it myself ) and you'd be surprised how many different area's would have people speaking like this.
