Euro 2020 Qualification

So all begins tomorrow night... As we look forward to the hosts that are... Europe!!

Reminder that Qualification is slightly interesting this year as apart from the top two automatically qualifying there are those that are already assured a Play-Off spot should the worst happen or if they're Scotland (In which case they stand no hope regardless) - Groups below and those guaranteed a Play-Off spot in bold, of course it starts to get messy should any / all the teams in bold get an automatic spot as their Play-Off spot will then go to another team based on their performance in the Nations League last year NOT how they perform in these Play-Offs

Group A : ENGLAND | Czech Republic | Bulgaria | Montenegro | Kosovo
Group B : Portugal | Ukraine | Serbia | Lithuania | Luxembourg
Group C : Netherlands | Germany | NORTHERN IRELAND | Estonia | Belarus
Group D : Switzerland | Denmark | REPUBLIC OF IRELAND | Georgia | Gibraltar
Group E : Croatia | WALES | Slovakia | Hungary | Azerbaijan
Group F : Spain | Sweden | Norway | Romania | Faroe Islands | Malta
Group G : Poland | Austria | Israel | Slovenia | FYR Macedonia | Latvia
Group H : France | Iceland | Turkey | Albania | Moldova | Andorra
Group I : Belgium | Russia | SCOTLAND | Cyprus | Kazakhstan | San Marino
Group J : Italy | Bosnia and Herzegovina | Finland | Greece | Armenia | Liechtenstein

  • On another note you have to question how long Joachim Low has in charge of the Germans

Playing the Netherlands on Sunday (?) they're up against Serbia in a friendly at the moment, at home and losing 1-0!!

Gotta remember that the Netherlands took four points from them as well in the Nations League so isnt going to be an easy game to start a winning run from either
  • Tomorrow night:
    Northern Ireland vs Estonia
    Kazahkstan vs Scotland

    Friday night:
    England vs Czech Republic

    Saturday:
    Gibraltar vs Ireland

    Sunday:
    Wales vs Slovakia
    Northern Ireland vs Belarus
    San Marino vs Scotland

    Monday night:
    Montenegro vs England

    Tuesday night:
    Ireland vs Georgia

  • Was looking at the fixtures. All crap this week apart from holland v germany
  • England v Czech Republic will be interesting as you'd expect that (and the away game) to decide who tops the Group

Although looking forward to seeing us against Kosovo - Interested to see how they're coming on as a Footballing Nation
  • Germany got a very experimental side out tonight

World Cup qualifiers they drew to Finland 1-1 then lost 9 games in a row scoring 2 goals.

Since then they have played 10 games won 8 drawn 2 and conceded 5

I think the manager dropped many senior players. A bit like southgate done

Yeah Kosovo could surprise a few for sure this year; wont be surprised if they make Euro 2020 via. the Play-Offs at the very least

Gotta remember though those games have been against: Azerbaijan | Malta | Faroe Islands | Albania | Burkina Faso | Madagascar

In a way they were in a false position for the Nations League because they're just starting out yet FIFA have allowed a few players who have represented other Nations to switch so they're never going to be the minnows that you'd expect from their first World Cup Qualifying Campaign results; whether they can be another like Croatia (who of course were born out of Yugoslavia) is another matter though, wonder if they'll be more like Bosnia who can get to a Major Tournament every so often yet not on a constant basis

And without both Tierney and Robertson

    Probably your two best players?

  • That germany team dont look great. Apart from maybe Neur and Sane dont think id swap any of their players for any england players. Long time since i can say that
  • Just seen the wales team that played tonight...even worse.

Robertson is and captain but Tierney is only a miss  for games like this without Robertson imho.

we should have too much for them tomorrow with our midfield but this is Scotland
  • Do Northern Ireland & Germany carpool to the games together? Feels like they're always in the same group
  • From SkySports

Matej Vydra says the Czech Republic have identified Harry Maguire as a weak link in England's team and have also been told to kick their opponents at Wembley.

    https://www.skysports.com/football/news/32461/11671431/harry-maguire-is-englands-weak-link-says-matej-vydra

So Maguire are weak link and we can expect some naughty challenges

    Is Maguire a weak link?

Not sure I'd agree with that by a long way - Especially as he's going to be lining up with a third choice Centre-Back

I'd say that whilst our Midfield has a lot of energy its not got the ability to pass the ball through teams so provided opposing teams keep it tight when in defence; we'll struggle to get through them
  • Could someone clear something up. As I understand the country that wins the Nations League gains automatic qualification to Euro 2020. That could be us. If we do win it then what happens to our qualification programme for 2020?

Nope not true... Winners of the Nations League win nothing apart from the trophy and the title

If we finish outside the top two in Euro 2020 Qualification then we'll enter the Play-Offs because we won our Group in the Nations League (so would go into another Semi-Final | Final type tournament next March) - If we finish in the top two then our Play-Off spot goes to another team who didnt finish top two in Qualification or win their Nations League group

EDIT, read FA's post as mine was wrong
  • Best thing to do at the moment is to treat the Nations League as a separate entity with it having nothing to do with Euro 2020 - We'll have the Finals to enjoy this summer and then deal with the Play-Offs if neccessary next March

I dont even think there is any point in trying to understand who'll be in the Play-Offs until the main Qualification is complete at the end of the year - As for example; Group B has three teams who are assured a Play-Off spot but two of them should qualify directly for the Euros; means that two Play-Off spots will need to occupied based on Nations League standings

Nor does it mean that Lithuania or Luxembourg will take their places just because they're in the same Euro 2020 Group

  • 2018 - enjoy the Nations League

2019 - enjoy the Euro qualification

2020 - Euro 2020 playoffs (via nations league groups) then the tournament

As @ForeverAddickted says, best to ignore 1 until the other is complete

  • And as for the Nations League finals in the summer, only the best countries have to worry about that anyway.

Don't they both play in the same position, so they'd have to play one out of position anyway.

Looks like Scotland try to accommodate both going by their line-ups in the Nations League

i.e. Last time they were both available; Robertson would play wing back with Tierney playing on the flank of a three man Defence

  • It worked well for them then............
  • It worked well for them then............
Yeah exactly!!... Imagine its their own Gerrard v Lampard issue

Could probably play Robertson as a Winger though with Tierney behind him the way the former gets forward for Liverpool

that got the boot after we lost to Israel.

as i said earlier in the thread Tierney is only a miss for todays game because Robertson is out. Robertson is back for Sundays game.

if we had a double header against Belgium and Russia you'd want as strong a squad as possible but for Kazakhstan and San Marino, we should have enough.

If you haven't got enough to beat San Marino then you probably resign from UEFA and give up.
  • Good start for Scotland.

1-0 down in Kazakhstan after 6 minutes.
