They should already have been down to (at least) 10 men with their persistent fouling which the ref refused to punish until the end.
They may have had possession, shots etc but they didn't trouble us - Dillon made one excellent save and a number of routine stops that any 'keeper should have made.
One poster is saying they should be petitioning the EFL to have Sunderland promoted instead of Barnsley, on the basis of Sunderland having a bigger budget and fanbase. And I don’t think he’s joking.
Enough Sunderland fans have been refreshingly honest about how little they deserved to win that game. I think we can forgive them for the handful who are having a bit of a whinge.
Looks as though plenty have been big enough to admit that they barely troubled us despite territorial advantage. They only really had the one plan; double up wide and cross to the very limited Wyke. Others are right - we didn't create a lot either but as acknowledged by most media, played the more progressive football, eg the first goal.
Honestly haven't looked too closely at possible fouls leading to the winner (has anyone south of Durham?) but playing with a Prem ref meant so many stoppages for comings together that would often be let go in the third division. It's surely clutching at straws to see offences now for both goals that nobody neutral has picked up on - despite being gifted a ludicrous og, a team that bought a £4,000,000 forward in January didn't muster another worthwhile effort.
Just as an aside, the poster who mentioned the shot blocked by a clear hand might need to be informed that Phillips is allowed to do hat sort of thing!
We were head and shoulders above them, not fussed what they think. They had a ten min spell and that's about it. Gifted them a freak goal and they still couldn't get it over the line.
We scored 6 goals throughout the play offs, they scored 1. The better attacking team went up, the end. They'll go up next season anyway, that wasn't a guarantee for us
This with bells on. Put the same up on the PMV thread. You can’t expect to go up on that. I felt that between us and Donny, it was toss of the coin who deserved to go through over 2 legs, as there was that little between us. However, over the course of the season, if anyone wants to argue we didn’t deserve it, they’re on another planet. It would be like us arguing we deserved automatic over Barnsley and Luton. We didn’t do enough, but we did do enough to go up via the play offs. There were 15 pts between us and Donny and over 90 mins on Sunday, we were the better team. The pundits said we were more progressive going forward. I’m not disputing how heart breaking it must’ve been for Sunderland to lose that way, and that would’ve been hard to take. They gave us a game for sure, and if you win a game 2-1 it’s always going to be tight, but don’t kid yourselves you did enough to go up

Morpeth mackem ..I called him a delusional tit on page 7..Got likes of other mackems for it.
Like most forums there are some ridiculous views but on the whole they admit we were the better side and deserved to win . I’m not going to knock them . I have a lot of respect for Sunderland and their fans .
I dont think its relevant, we won and that's it! doesn't matter of who is right and wrong, we will be in the Championship they will not, its black and white...
Neither team were much better than the other, my own view is they had a 10 minute spell after they scored where I was worried(bricking it!), then we controlled the game, Cullen bossed it. Thought we struggled the last 20 minutes and scored against the run of play. They looked dangerous when crossing, we played the better football in the middle (at times).
any team that plays DonkeyMan (A K A Wyke) up front and pays millions for Groggy Grigg deserve to win fuck all .. having said that, had we lost, this site would be full of foul play accusations and whinging posts ((:>)
Every club has fans who blame the ref when they don’t get the result they want, including us. If they turned a few of their draws into wins they’d have gone up automatically.

I'm going to count the penalties at home to Doncaster and maintain we scored 10 throughout the play-offs to their one.
All about opinions,Here we have a classic example of a club spending a fortune on so called strikers who have contributed nothing to their clubs cause. Then we have Charlton who spent nothing,we have Taylor who runs his nuts off every game, even if he dosent score,he will assist.Parker runs his self into the ground. We had Cullen and his mates all trying to play good mid field football, they had cattermole and leadbetter who did nothing other than foul and niggle, either could have seen Red.No doubt the better team won.
Agree - some total bells on there - some good posters as well
However, in terms of our winning goal I think there are some refs out there who would have disallowed it due to the challenge in the box
I'm not saying I agree, just that some would have done that
Nonsense!
Not at all - all I am saying is that I think there are refs out there who would have blown up and said the Sunderland defender was fouled because he was smothered by the Charlton player
I can see how others would see it that way - I don't agree - but I could see it happening
Watch the winning goal and focus on their ‘captain’ Honeyman standing on the penalty spot doing sod all whilst his poor teammate has to try to defend against Charlton’s two centre backs at the far post on his own!
We weren't our flowing best, we all know that. We looked more likely than them though and our equaliser was a goal Brazil would have been proud to score. Sometimes you have to dig in and we have the characters to do that when required! We were louder and better on the day - even if better wasn't our very best. I don't really see how that can be debated seriously.
We even scored a goal for them and they still couldn’t beat us. We finished 3rd, them 5th over the course of the season and we beat them over 90 (+4) minutes.
The right team were promoted, it’s almost impossible to build an argument to the contrary.
Purrington, and Pratley, are clearly behind the ball but because they are ahead of the defenders some mackems think they are offside.
Stanley Mathews never set up a goal by that reasoning.
Nah they’re saying that Purrington was in an offside position when Dijksteel flicked the ball on toward Taylor. Different phases though, that stopped being offside some years ago.

Bugger 'em!

End of...

Enjoy Shrewsbury away, midweek, in January

Anyways who cares! COYR
