We would have the situation where a "miked up" ref gives a goal and the whole world knows within seconds that it is handball. Any attempt by the VAR team to overrule the ref would presumably be illegal and unfair.
How would the conversation with VAR go?
Ref - "I can sense I've missed something but I don't know what."
VAR - "Sorry England cannot appeal so we cannot help you".
Ref - "Please Please tell me what happened. I know I should disallow this goal. The crowd are booing. Please tell me what happened!"
VAR - "Sorry mate you're on your own!"
I would go further with the appeal system and award appeals according to a fair play points system. Therefore teams accrue points for the following:
1. They don't argue with the referee
2. Only the captain speaks to the referee
3. They don't stand in front of opposition free kicks4. They don't take the ball into the corners to waste time5. The goalkeeper takes goal kicks within a set time6. They don't mock opposition fans by celebrating at the wrong endEtc etc
This would mean that VAR is not only to make decisions fairer but encourages fair play. Teams with better fair play scores may end up with multiple appeals per match whereas others would get none. After all, it's a spectator sport and all this 'game management' is making the game shit to watch.
Otherwise, what else would you want to get rid of - playing the ball around at the back to try to use up time?
If you pass the ball around the back then the ball really is 'in play' as opposed to simply within the pitch perimeters.
The obstruction rules state that if you are within playing distance of the ball then it's not obstruction.
This 'taking the ball' into the corner idea is relatively new and started with one player doing it. Now, you have sometimes two or even three players doing it.
It would also be within the rules for five or six to form a circle around one teammate who has one foot on the ball. Would you be happy with that too?
Lots of people on this thread moan about the quality of football in League One but what makes me lose the will to watch is all this 'game management'. As far as I am concerned they can continue to get on with it this way and eventually no-one will want to watch.
If 'fair play' isn't implemented the the rules need changing.0 -

Beyond belief really. How does anyone who's ever watched a game of football, never mind a supposedly qualified ref, look at the challenge from Hojbjerg on Mitoma and not tell the ref to review it?
The kind of decision that if it happened in Eastern Europe everyone would be saying it was blatant match fixing.

As I said in the PL thread, only saw the last hour of the game but thought the standard of refereeing was appalling.
The penalty appeal alone I just could not fathom why it wasnt reviewed by VAR. It was almost as if a Spurs ST Holder was sitting in the VAR room!1 -
The thing is, it's only going to get worse. Refs are leaving the game in droves at lower levels because of the amount of abuse and threats of violence they get from kids, older players and parents. Something really has to be done to protect refs at grass roots level so that the only ones we have coming through to the top aren't just the dregs who survive the years of abuse, or these kinds of terrible decisions are going to become the norm.

Whether your in favour of VAR or not it is definitely ruining the spectacle. You want to celebrate your teams goal but your waiting on edge for someone elses opinion. Enjoyment is being taken away for most people so just leave it to the referee.
Scrap it altogether or just use it for automatic goal line decisions.5 -

If they are producing referees not of the required quality, it clearly isn't enough.
