  • Not too alarmed by this. Didn't we activate an extension in Fosu's contract to ensure we got some sort of fee?
  • West Ham's choice, not Josh's. Might just be ensuring they get a bigger fee but all depends on how much money HE is prepared to part with to secure Josh on a permanent deal.

No we offered Fosu a contract to ensure we got a fee

He rejected it which enabled him to move to Oxford but they still had to pay us compensation due to his age

Same would have happened with Cullen had he joined us in the summer after refusing to sign this Extension - Although I bet anything that West Ham would have recalled him and left him to rot in the U23s or would have just sold him had he done that
  • This is purely so we pay a fee for him.  Doesn’t mean he’s in their plans, we have to cough up a decent fee now that’s all.  Guess this will see what ESI are made of.
  • West Ham protecting their investment, no surprise
  • It would seem sensible of them to activate the extension of a player who they will certainly be able to command a fee for if they do decide he is surplus to requirements.
  • I'm sure I've read articles about Moyes rating him. I know he played Cullen during his first stint at West Ham.

If they go down, they've got a Championship midfielder there ready to go, because I'm sure they'll need him with the outgoings they'll have should relegation happen.

On the flip side, if they stay up. Maybe Moyes could see him playing a part there or maybe its just to get some return when they flog him on. Guess it remains to be seen.

  • Reckon it will come down to whether West Ham stay up or not. If they do then I can't see them wanting him. If they go down at the very least he'd be a good squad player for them.
Bit of a conundrum really. Really want West Ham to go down, but if they do they'll probably keep him!

It was Harriott we did this with, Reading then bought him the same summer.

  • I think it all depends on how West Ham finish the season now. As has been said, if they go down there is a stronger chance that he becomes part of their plans.
  • Well it was always going to be this or a recall earlier this month they were never going to let him drift out of contract.

It's the lesser of two evils IMO and doesn't mean he can't still be made permanent.

I suspect as others have said if they stay up they'll look to cash in and if they go down they'll keep him.

If they stay up, next season our longest serving out field player could be on loan!

Worst thing that'll happen is Ireland qualify for the Euros - Have a reasonable tournament with Cullen instrumental

Will be Bielik last summer all over again
Agreed,  If WH stay up, someone will buy him in the summer, hopefully us, but he could go for big bucks like Bielik.  Cant see him playing regularly in the Prem for them.
  • He’s gotta be worth £4m minimum
if we sign him for that sort of dough whilst at the same time completing the proper purchase of The Valley and Sparrows Lane then miracles do happen
  • So he'll now be 24 when his contract expires - correct? Does that mean he'd be available for free in summer 2021, rather than for a development fee?

Yep, which is why I think WH will sell him this summer.  If we are serious about buying him, we should do so now.  Price is going to go up in the summer and we are the only club able to buy him now

Actually, Cullen is 24 in early April.

By the time his West Ham extended contract expires, he'll already be 25.

Well no way will West Ham loan him to us for a 3rd season, especially with his contract running down in the summer of 21. He'll either be in their squad next season or sold

  • I'd be surprised if Moyes was in charge if they went down

No doubt that is their intention
  • How much would you value Cullen at ?? I am thinking £2 - £3 million. Using Maddison as a guide - think Beliyk was overpriced by Arsenal and Derby were desperate at the time. Hard one to gauge.

I'd say £5m minimum what with his potential

I rate him more than Beilik but agree £10m now seems like Derby paid too much. Would say more than 5, less than 10 for Cullen would be a decent price.
