On Friday I relented and, after 2 years without, I bought season tickets for my dad and myself. He’ll be 79 at the end of the year and hadn’t been well in recent months, but feeling much better now. I just decided that whilst we both want Duchatelet gone, I wanted to make sure we got as many of these days out as possible. To see the joy on his face and him jumping up & down like a kid when our goals went in, particularly the third, were special moments.
I watched the full game again earlier with him, thanks to a link on the Stoke forum. Funny hearing the Stoke commentators (including Denis Smith) views, but they were relatively fair until the 2nd & 3rd went in. Although I can understand why.
I watched the Liverpool/Norwich game on Friday night and wondered why any team would want to use the new goal kick rule so much. It’s just inviting pressure on yourself and we persisted with it as well. Dillon is a young keeper who will only get better, but his choice of passes at the back sometimes is very poor. I know we’d like to play out from the back, but you need to be aware of what’s around you & clubs are just going to push higher now, with this new rule.
Across the back, I think only Lockyer was a little shaky. Not too worried as he has to grow into this division & it will come for him, particularly with the likes of Pearce alongside him. After all the talk about Solly, he had a very decent game. We know he can’t do 2 games a week, but he’ll still be a big part of this season and won’t let us down (I doubt Bowyer would play him left). Purr-ington (as the Stoke coomentators called him) is looking at ease in this team. Excellent player.
The midfield looked amazing. Cullen is so composed on the ball. Got himself out of a few tight spots as we played the ball round and, just when you thought he was about to just poke a ball forward, his football brain kicks in, he pulls the ball round a Stoke player and then has space for a great pass. Gallagher was quiet in the first half, but this is his first senior game and he just grew and grew into it. What a finish for the goal and awareness to be there, knowing he’s only been in the house for a few days.
Darren Pratley...excellent game. Roamed around and popped up everywhere, breaking up play and generally being a great pro. Jonny Williams...I don’t think there’s a Charlton fan out there that does not love this fella. Plays with a massive smile on his face, huge enthusiasm and sublime skills. Will win us a lot of games this season. Leko looked like a right handful. Can see what Bowyer means about him getting him on the edge of his seat. The ball to Lyle was excellent.
And Lyle...just an amazing player. Not claiming he’s the greatest, but he’s connected with this club in a way like only a few do. Butland should have done better, but there was power and a wicked dip on that shot and his layoff for Gallagher’s goal was perfect. Seeing Bowyer walk over and put an arm round his shoulder & the smiles as he was teaching Leko the tunnel jump. No problems there at all.
Loved being back and seeing a group of players putting in a shift like that. We may not always have a lot of possession this season, but we press with energy and have no end of skill to make something out of it when we have the ball.
For some it’s still a matter of principle and one that I respect greatly that Roland doesn’t get a penny more. If that’s people’s choice then I completely understand. However, I am pleased more and more people are coming to watch the team, because it really is something amazing to be part of for the moment. I’m not saying for one second those that stay away are contributing in any way less, I’m just pleased there’s strong backing for the team on match days
Phillips: 7 couldnt do anything about the goal. Solly: 7 did well. Lockyer: 6 good bad and ugly, needs to sharpen up his passing out from the back. Pearce: 7 good game. Purrington: 7 quieter than last week but played well. Cullen: 9 absolutely massive player for us, he is quality. Pratley: 7,5 worked really hard, looks incredibly fit for his age. Gallagher: 9 going to be a special player this boy. Williams: 8.5 lovely player to watch and has added an end product to his game. Prem quality. Leko: 7.5 looks exciting, frustrating, quality and lacking all at the same time. Definitely a wildcard - will terrorise a few defences this season. Taylor: 8 after a tough week for him he came out and got a goal and assist. Love this bloke. Referee: 6 couple of shockers he missed - the two footed late tackle on Williams was minimum a yellow and he didnt even give a foul.
He could have saved it mate, his positioning was all over the place, his footwork was wrong because he expected it to go across him, and so he got embarrassed at the near post by a chest height shot, terrible keeping and only himself to blame.
In fairness it was an absolute rocket... But he should have been half a step to the right.
A couple of points, after re watching the brief highlights again.
For Taylor's goal, I think it was Gallagher that was the only player alive to the fact Butland might palm it out, he was in POMO no one went with him.
Philips didn't move for either Hogan's shot that hit the bar, nor Gregory's skyer. The later is a bit harsh. But it's worrying all the same.
Our 2nd we had 4 players in the box, plus Pratley arriving for a cross from open play. That's good to see at 1-1 in what was then a tight game.
For our 3rd Gallagher starts from so deep no one was marking him, brilliant from Jacko and Marsh as it wasn't actually that well executed, Cullen under hits it and Lyle has to work harder than he should to flick it.
Unreal result and taking nothing away from the win thought we had the rub of the green as should of been 2-1 to them had they taken that chance which was a howler of a miss.
Stoke and Blackburn are proper championship sides and we’ve taken 6 points off of them on paper 2 of the tougher games we’ve got this month.
Remaining 4 if can get 4-6 points I’ll be over the moon.
Barnslay a - lose forest h - lose Brentford h - win ( taylor hat trick ) reading a - draw
Great day out, Brentford tickets already purchased. Moved to right at the back of the NU by the drummer and I think ive found my new home. Im 36 and feel like an old man in that crowd, its a great sign for the future and our fan bases age becoming lower yet again.
How do you think I feel? I'm 62 ffs.
A fine age! btw when did Charlton raise the senior concession age to 65 from 63? 😡
About 4 years ago from 60 to 65, 2 years before I was due. I believe it was on the recommendation of the then new ticket manager who came from Palace.
Kicks long and then ball watches for a long time. Starts heading back to his goal only when their keeper clears it long, but at no great speed. He then has to rush back which means his weight is on the wrong foot when the shot comes in so cannot push off to save it.
I am sure he is learning from his mistakes, and the Championship is a hard place to learn them. He will be fine though.
I would add that I thought he got a hand to the shot that hit the post.
Would love to have one of these imaginary keepers that saves everything and never makes a mistake - trouble is they don't exist. Don't think many keepers would have saved Ince's shot.
Why do so many people jump on comments dare criticising our home grown players. I agree that Phillips made a mistake yesterday, not as glaringly obvious as the one in the play off final, but a mistake none the less. Lockyer also made a mistake with a poor pass and I'm sure others did too.
From what I have seen nobody is calling to Phillips to be dropped or saying he isn't allowed to make mistakes, they are just stating it happened. I have only seen the highlights so not sure on the wind or Phillip's eyeline but at first glance I disagree many keepers wouldn't have saved it, or at least got a decent hand to it.
I will back you up a bit, here.
After watching the highlights on Valley Pass, the camera behind the Charlton goal shows that Dillon ends up running back quite a lot, and never really gets his feet sorted out by the time Ince gets his shot away.
A mistake that I'm sure plenty of keepers have made in the past, and will make in the future.
Does Dillon deserve to be dropped? No! Has he made an error? Yes.
If he was error free: 1) He wouldn't be playing for Charlton. 2) He would be an England international.
That's not true. Butland is an International and has made mistakes two weeks in a row which have led to goals. Can't work out what he was trying to do ? Have no problem with the goal we conceded as it was a freak goal.
I just hate this playing one, Two's in the penalty area. Everyone does it now, But when Pearce nearly did a Naby Sarr I thought the Lunatics have taken over. There was a slight breeze as well !!!
That strengthens the argument that the initial comment was correct. You can make mistakes and still be a quality goalkeeper. Cut out the mistakes and you are almost the complete package.
Although even if Phillips did not make any mistakes, not quite sure he is of England quality, certainly not yet. But I really hope he kicks on this year, at least we have Amos waiting in the wings if not.
It is something I have observed over the years with a particular interest in keeping, with my son being a keeper. There are some keepers who make more than their fair share of wonder saves and more than their fair share of mistakes. De Gea is one. Everybody remembers the wonder saves and thinks he is better than better technical keepers who are more reliable,
An example yesterday was a save De Gea made against Chelsea - instead of pushing a hard shot away with open hand/palms, he punched. There is an increased risk of is skidding over your knuckles and with that pace of shot it was not technically the right way to go.
I think with Phillips, he is an excellent keeper. We have to remember he hasn't had a full season yet. I think you can excuse him being out of position, as their move happened so quickly. It was an error but not a major one and the sort you learn from. Phillips has to keep learning and he will be a fine keeper. I certainly am not anxious when he is in goal.

When criticism is OTT I'll call it out - nothing to do with whether the keeper is home grown or not. The way some fans talk you seem to think keepers should save everything - Butland was certainly at fault for our first goal but Ince's shot flew in and perhaps you should focus on that.
I get sick and tired of some of the criticism of keepers when it comes to shot stopping - the main issue with Phillips and our defence is the playing the ball around at the back and potentially losing it. Bowyer needs to address how we play out from the back.
I wasn't at the game. A result I didn't really expect like last week and after watching the highlights it could easily of been a draw but luck was on our side and we've got a fantastic three points there! LB character is really shining through in this team. Full of grit, determination and a little bit of quality, just like his playing style. We will have our ups and downs this season but these opening two games have really given me hope.
Watching that third goal on repeat and it really is just shocking defending... Regardless of the surprising low ball, why did no one track either Taylor or Gallagher!!
PWR the posts after FA’s but I felt we were going to score when the Covered End starting doing that Icelandic clap...you could see that the stoke players looked like they were on the ropes at that moment in time

I agree with that - although I would say LB had a bit more than a 'little bit of quality' - he was a top class footballer.
Watching in real time from my side-on vantage point almost next to where the ball was struck, what inclined me to think that Dillon could have done better with their goal was his own reaction. It was more than just the usual post concession disappointment. He was really beating himself up. I thought the real error however was Lockyear misjudging the flight and getting easily knocked off the ball. Ince is no giant. Anyhoo, all academic now.

I’m sure I’m about to be embarrassed here: what is POMO?
Also, on the players marks thread, it seems you sometimes get last minute marks coming in that seem way off the rough consensus that’s built up during the days since the match.
Don’t agree at all about the corner btw, I thought it was perfect. Taylor had to move from his normal spot in front of the keeper to get in front of the two defenders who were between him and Cullen, despite efforts by both to prevent him from doing so. Cullen hit the corner at just the right speed for Taylor to get in front of the second of them in time to direct the ball into the open space in the penalty area for Gallagher’s late run. If Cullen had hit it any harder it would have been more difficult to set it up so perfectly. Seemed that way to me, at least.

I still think people are forgetting or are unaware that Ince's shot was assisted by a 50mph wind.
It looked like the water from the sprinklers pre match was ending up in the West stand.
It was. I was in the first row if west upper and we were getting wet! Thank god for tartan blankets.
Was in the west upper and got the odd spot....probably due to the wind.
It’s almost like we are nearly a proper football cloob again with a great management team, who know the English leagues and we have decent players. We just need to remove one piece of the puzzle that doesn’t fit and we’ll be there....Roland do one will ya, you’re about as wanted as a Saturday night dose of chlamydia!

Position of maximum opportunity.
Nominally the space in between the six-yard line and the back post .
As a proud Welsh lady my wife was pleased to hear the Stoke fans singing Delilah yesterday. Intrigued, I checked this morning as to why and it appears it has something to do with the police asking them to stop singing "sweary" songs in a pub back in the 1980's. At which point someone piped up with Delilah and the tradition continues.
Could be a difficult afternoon in our household today given the team England are fielding against Wales at Twickenham.

Superb post by Katrien's Ex.
This feels special. This is a special time to be experiencing the Bowyer, Jackson and Gallen effect, plus Andy Marshall, Euell and Cafc academy coaches.
If we had lost Bowyer's A team then at least a decade may've elapsed before the spirit of Wembley under new ownership could be replicated. Personally I believe we would have lost another generation of fans.
I take the opposite view of not a penny more now. New potential owners want to see the vibrant fan base and a club worth buying into. I accept it hasn't worked so far but our best chance of being sold is not being seen as a little club in London with a 5k gate playing Rochdale but a Passion club being watched by 20k playing Leeds.
Most people make big decisions in life, thinking of their family. Let's hope Roderick tells his Dad to take the money and run before his vanity project loses even more money. New potential owners can see that they wouldn't have to spunk a fortune with Bowyer trying to reach the promised land, But a kitty that was Commensurate with being a mid table Championship ship team. (Eg: Sheffield United last season under the excellent Chris Wilder !)
If only the price of Charlton didn't go up every time we win a match. Bought a cheap as chips season ticket for the first time in 3 years so I would save myself money and support Lee Bowyer.
Ps. Still haven't bought food or alcohol in ground for years. Coffee in emergency only.

Why would I focus on Butlands mistake? He’s not a Charlton player.
For anyone who was booing or have remarked about the tackle on Williams. The Stoke player got to the ball first and the ref was right to give a throw. First time I have seen it despite being at the game.
Ps. Don't you just love that potteries accent !
Even if he did get the ball, that was still reckless. Some of us are old enough to remember Danny Mills seeing red at Ipswich in the play-off semi. Replays showed he hadn't touched the bloke but there was no chance of getting the red overturned because of the way Mills went in. Yesterday's wasn't as bad but there was still no regard for Williams's safety.

Letting in a wind assisted worldy (Hamer patent) isn't a problem for me. The interplay with one, two's are the problem for a keeper who is average with his feet. Since Phillips replaced Steer, he has had no issues with his hands but kicking remains problematical(or trapping the ball !)
Watching highlights and live matches over the weekend, this is going to be a problem for everyone including Man city if too many triangle (keeper and two defenders) passes are made from the short pass in the area.
The teams that are good at closing down will think it's Xmas, VE day and Birthdays rolled into one.

I was making the point on what was an obvious mistake. I think some fans have unrealistic expectations re keepers and are over critical - if you watch a lot of the world's top keepers you can always argue that saves could have been made if the positioning/anticipation had been better.
I'm probably not the only fan who's been somewhat distant from the trials and tribulations of the last few years at the club, so it says a lot for the job that Bowyer and all have done in getting me back and excited again about Charlton over the last year. It's hard to escape from the view that they are building something quite special at the club.
The business done over the transfer window looks really strong with Taylor retained and some quality loanees in. Kayal was one of Brightons top players in the Championship, by all accounts Field should be in WBA team and Gallagher already looks capable at this level. And we all know about Cullen. Throw in Jonny Williams and there is the making of a side there!
However, it usually pays to temper enthusiasm somewhat as a Charlton fan. I had a look at the Expected Goal stats on Experimental361 for the first two games. Based on that we should have conceded two goals so far (spot on)....but we should've only scored two as well. Ranking every team so far on Expected Goals we rank 15th....that doesn't adjust for quality of opposition though and it is early days. Leeds and Brentford are clear at the top already though.
At this stage it certainly looks as if we've got a squad and team capable of holding its own in the division. Low mid-table is probably something we would all be pretty content with after the last few years. Who knows what may be possible though....it seems as it Bowyer has instilled something in the guys that the stats doesn't capture!

Stoke and Blackburn are proper championship sides and we’ve taken 6 points off of them on paper 2 of the tougher games we’ve got this month.
Remaining 4 if can get 4-6 points I’ll be over the moon.
Barnslay a - lose
forest h - lose
Brentford h - win ( taylor hat trick )
reading a - draw
An example yesterday was a save De Gea made against Chelsea - instead of pushing a hard shot away with open hand/palms, he punched. There is an increased risk of is skidding over your knuckles and with that pace of shot it was not technically the right way to go.
I think with Phillips, he is an excellent keeper. We have to remember he hasn't had a full season yet. I think you can excuse him being out of position, as their move happened so quickly. It was an error but not a major one and the sort you learn from. Phillips has to keep learning and he will be a fine keeper. I certainly am not anxious when he is in goal.
I get sick and tired of some of the criticism of keepers when it comes to shot stopping - the main issue with Phillips and our defence is the playing the ball around at the back and potentially losing it. Bowyer needs to address how we play out from the back.
LB character is really shining through in this team. Full of grit, determination and a little bit of quality, just like his playing style. We will have our ups and downs this season but these opening two games have really given me hope.
Seemed that way to me, at least.
with a great management team, who know the English leagues and we have decent players.
We just need to remove one piece of the puzzle that doesn’t fit and we’ll be there....Roland do one will ya, you’re about as wanted as a Saturday night dose of chlamydia!
Nominally the space in between the six-yard line and the back post .
Thats one hell of a stat.
New potential owners can see that they wouldn't have to spunk a fortune with Bowyer trying to reach the promised land,
But a kitty that was Commensurate with being a mid table Championship ship team.
With your hands on your hips
You bring your knees in tight?
The interplay with one, two's are the problem for a keeper who is average with his feet. Since Phillips replaced Steer, he has had no issues with his hands but kicking remains problematical(or trapping the ball !)
Watching highlights and live matches over the weekend, this is going to be a problem for everyone including Man city if too many triangle (keeper and two defenders) passes are made from the short pass in the area.
The teams that are good at closing down will think it's Xmas, VE day and Birthdays rolled into one.
