What a result! Thouhgt we got a little bit lucky, but long may that continue. Very impressed with Locker,Gallagher and Leko )though he seemed to fade away)
Best I’ve felt about the team in years, and no disrespect to what Chris Powell achieved, this current lot and what we have under Bowyer is something else. Today I felt we came up against a decent Stoke team, and had one of our mistakes been punished, it may have been different story chasing the game. That said, Bowyer is really building something.
Cullen is class. Man of the match for me. Has come back, and carried on as if he were bossing it from last season. Pratley, what a fighter. Had such a tough job marshalling the likes of Ince this afternoon, but he’s really stepped his game up. Williams was immense. His stature never seems to count against him in the physical battle and his ability to keep the ball is superb. Gallagher got more and more into it and although he found it difficult to make space for himself in the first half, the way he finished the game was a sign of things to come, and we have a real player there.
Leko looks dangerous. Granted a couple of runs fizzled out and he should’ve put us 2-1 up, but he gives that added dimension of pace that is definitely needed. Massively pleased for Taylor. Tough old week and after everything that’s gone on, to have 2 in 2 already just shows what a class act he is.
Defensively on the ball, there were a few dodgy moments, and you have to be so careful at this level, but overall the spirit and fight the back line showed was superb.
Final word for me goes to Gallen this week. This man deserves massive adulation for what he’s brought in based on what he’s had to work with. With the possibility of Hemed to be added to Kayal and Field, plus the players already in before this week, top class and exciting stuff
Proud of everything that is happening on the playing side of things at the moment
I have been watching football long enough - around 45 years - to know a special manager when I see one. There are lots of decent ones, even more competent ones but special ones are as rare as hen's teeth. Roland you old fool, can't you see how lucky you have been? Maybe even you will see in the coming months. Back Bowyer and you will make millions. That isn't the fat bloke from Moneyball telling you that, it is the old lefty from Charlton life.
Bowyer is carrying on from last season and he’s building something special. We will compete in this league. We have a team that won’t give up. He knows what you need in a winning team. It’s shows in the type of midfielders he brings in - energetic, mobile, skilful and aggressive. Gallagher looks a great prospect and I can’t wait to see Field and Kayal. We had promising starts under Peeters and Luzon, but I can feel this is very different.
We won today with Aneke coming off the bench, Field, Kayal and Morgan not even in the squad. We’re looking to add a right back and hopefully Hemed or another striker.
Opponents and their fans will underestimate us. Clubs with recent Prem history in particular will expect to dominate possession. Their fans will get frustrated because we’ll fight for every ball and nick goals against the run of play. Even if they do control the game we’ll find ways into games, we have players who will create chances.
Our goals today were the type of goals we were scoring throughout last season -
Taylor’s a quick attack from the back. We’ll catch teams out when space opens up like that. Bowyer teams pass out from the back, but they also know when to go more direct and up the tempo. Nice to see long pass from Leko set up the goal, a player who you might imagine gets his head down and runs rather than picks out a ball like that. Brilliant to see Taylor score, especially like that after all that’s happened recently.
Watch Aneke’s in full if you can. Williams drives into the box to try to create a cut back. It doesn’t come off so Cullen tried exactly the same thing and it came off. It’s clearly a way Bowyer wants them to attack because it’s so effective. We scored goals and won penalties doing just that all season long last year. We have midfielders and attackers who can pass and dribble their way into those positions. One reason it’s so dangerous is that you don’t need top strikers to score those chances. It’s about getting those players into the right areas and reacting before the opposition do.
Gallagher’s goal came from a set piece. From stats I remember seeing late last season we perhaps surprisingly were one of the top scorers in the league from either corners or set pieces.
Powell was the best manager since Curbs and did a very good job for us, but Bowyer has overtaken him. He’s a genius and is our best chance of experiencing that sort of success again. We’re competitive but play good football and it’s far better than any of that tippy tappy stuff the likes of Robinson and Peeters tried to play.
We’re going over achieve in terms of our budget. Maybe that will only mean lower mid table but whatever happens it’ll be a season to remember. Whether you’re going to games or watching streams do whatever you can to make sure you see as much as you can. It might even mean the play-offs again. With the madness of the past five years the chances of another bizarre and ridiculous twist in which Roland owns the club as we march back into the Premier League with a tiny budget can’t be completely ruled out.
That is one of the best, most informative, post I have read on here. Hats off.
A lot of people deserve credit for last seasons heroics, the teams mentality, their relationship with the fans and the start we have made to this season, but, ultimately it’s down to Lee Bowyer. What a job he is doing. Phenomenal.

COYR.
I so agree. Bowyer is with us at the right time ... a combination which will achieve far more than people outside Charlton expected.
Great result and we still have Kayal and Field to come in to the team. Sloppy at the back at times and put ourselves under pressure too often. Gallagher is absolute Mustard and thoroughly deserved his goal. Williams was immense as well.
Still got Kayal, Field and potentially Hemed to add to that team/squad as well, not one of which you'd honestly call much of a downgrade. At least one more striker and right back cover to add if possible for purposes of injury, suspension etc. but we might actually have depth for once.
Stoke have a big budget - don't they still have the parachute payments. It was a great result. Second half, I felt we were the more likely to win it before we scored.
Bowyer, Jackson and Marshall clearly know what they are doing. First 5 to 10 Stoke were dominant and looked intimidating, but then lost momentum presumably due to some tactical change made by Bowyer and Co. All the Charlton subs worked, but the Stoke subs seem to have a bit less impact.
Thought Gallagher, for such a young lad with no real experience, was hugely impressive and looked a natural.
And Pratley seems to look like a better footballer at this level, weirdly.
Cracking game, including some good football from Stoke too.
Great result and whilst stoke may have hit the woodwork twice I think we overall deserved the win... we controlled the game for longer spells than they did.
great goal and work rate from Lyle Taylor... any doubters of him getting his head down were certainly proven wrong today.
leko really looked exciting to watch, his dribbling and overall work rate was quality.
jonny Williams is just a wizard... his dribbling and some of the touches he did today were fantastic
and last but certainly not least.. my MOTM without a shadow of a doubt today... Conor Gallagher,... moving literally everywhere from the get go right to the final whistle... capped it off with a thoroughly deserved goal. Didn’t really see him put a foot wrong the whole game.
Couldn’t have hoped for a better start in the championship COYR
In 2 minds, first was bloody angry last Saturday got to Gatwick thought by the time I arrive in Italy I can watch/ listen to match. Inevitably the flight was delayed so on flight for the match, got there and got texts from my son great result. Today thought I might be able to see match with Valley pass oh shit, the first time I take my Tablet not laptop so could only listen my Son and brother went. Text each other for goals. Another great result landlady thinks I am either umbriaco or unpatzo jumping up and shouting when we scored. Oh well more vino and Grappa now to celebrate. At least I will be back next week.
Rode our luck at times and a team in better form than Stoke would probably have punished us.
We have a great midfield and options there which is nice. We definitely need a right back in and if the goals dry up for Taylor I can't see where else they will consistently come from.
Playing out from the back was very nearly our undoing today. All 4 outfield defenders looked uncomfortable and struggled with Stoke pressing us so far up the pitch.
Cullen and Gallagher looked the business and I was impressed with Taylor's work rate.
Not sharing the same level of adulation for Leko, he is very raw and I think will frustrate more than please. Spent a fair bit of time on his backside after falling over.
Having not been to any pre-season games I wasn't expecting much from Lockyer, but thought him and Pearce looked ok together - the lack of pace at the back is a worry though.
Bowyer certainly has the Midus touch and has the team working so hard for him. Still think mid table will be a huge over achievement.

An uncharacteristic excitable post from you @Scoham. Hard to strongly disagree with it though. Genius might be a bit strong just yet, but Bowyer is certainly very bloody good.
You’re bang on about playing style. I love watching us play. We play what I believe should be considered the modern English style. High tempo and committed but with good efficient passing and a focus on chance creation. We’re up there with 97/98 and the Parker/Jensen/Di Canio side in terms of entertainment. Powell, for all his achievements was a naturally conservative coach. He’d have switched Leko for a defensive player today and taken the point. Bowyer brought on Aneke and encouraged William’s forward and was rewarded handsomely. Might have backfired on another day but I want to see us trying to win, like most fans do. I’ll take the odd loss dong that, like I’ll take the odd iffy back pass trying to play good football out from defence.
I’m not going to get too carried away yet re potential final league position, but we do appear to be carrying momentum and certainly aren’t going to be cut adrift in last place like our budget might suggest. Could be a fun season.
Bowyer is not the sort to settle for a point. He'd rather lose one going for three. I think he is really special. We have to remember that we still have a lot of gelling to do - and I think we are going to get stronger. The management team seem to always get the calls right with transfers.
