Were we lucky? They had all the possession but Phillips only made two saves, one looked like it was going over. We defended well and carved them open for our goal. They didn’t carve us open like that.
Brentford lost the game when they kept all their eggs in one basket and bid for our striker 2 mins before the close of the window.
I'm still in shock. That was impossible defending all the way through but especially in stoppage time. To be up against it like that all game but still win is the hallmark of an amazing team.
2nd in the table and unbeaten after 5 games? If this is a dream please don't wake us up!
Lee Bowyer, the staff and the players. Take a bow. This is a magical time, let's hope it continues.
22 passes in the build up to a goal on Weds night. Did we pass to a red shirt more than 22 times over the whole 90mins today? Ball retention was shocking today.
We looked knackered from the off. Valiant stuff from the back 4, Pearce was cramping badly at the end but still throwing himself Infront of everything. Lockyear is the master of the last ditch tackle, but gets himself in a mess rather too often for my liking.
Need a decision on one of the right backs asap.
Brentford looked a tidy, well organised side, but for all their possession I was never really that nervous and couldn't see them scoring.
Good job we have a break, as they players need a rest.
I broke my boycott of The Valley today, first time in forever £45 on the door for me and my boy
Did we have more than one shot on target? I thought we were very fortunate to get away with all 3 points, somehow our defence kept a clean sheet and I don't know how. I was very happy to see the back of Brentford's number 3, he got behind us way too often
A good atmosphere for most of the game although VFR gets sung at 1000mph with a polite clap to ourselves for remembering the words I guess.
We looked tired - the tempo of Wednesday and the heat a bad combination for us - Leko in particular looked very lethargic
BUT one chance and one goal - defended brilliantly - every season has gritty backs to the wall matches like that in it - 3 welcome points
Brentford good side who retain possession well - no goal threat though
Bowyer has crafted a side that fights hard even when they are not on top form
Brentford forum is good for a laugh on this match - they are seething !!!
They haven't gone all Bobby Big Bollocks on us have they? They are the 4th team in West London. Money can really turn your head, i mean look at the Belgian arsewipe we are saddled with!

Where was Naby? We surrendered possession for most of the match, and it was the complete opposite of the first forty five minutes v. Forest.
Yes, bodies were put on the line, and it was a valiant defensive performance, but we were very lucky to get anything from the game. The heat definitely didn’t help, and we generally looked a little lethargic. I’m assuming Otzumer wasn’t ready to play again, but a player like that who’s great in tight areas, would have been useful. Brentford's back four were superb.
In a backs to the wall type of last 20 minutes, Pearce is excellent. But the overall lack of quality in build up is why I believe Sarr fits better with how Bowyer wants to play, and would have helped us play more on the front foot. Pearce isn't good on the ball, and he tends to play very deep. Was excellent today, but I think Nabs deserves a shot in a back four.
Pearce was my MOTM by the way.
But Pearce is the leader.
And plays by example.
All the while the new players are settling in and buying into Bow's ethos, the team finding it's feet in the Championship and the players building self-belief ..... then we need the organisation and leadership of Pearce.
I believe many would agree with you that Sarr fits in better with how Bowyer ideally wants to play - the Nabster played an integral part in our exhibition passing game against Forest; he'll step in when Pearce is rested and to suit a certain game plan.
If team building was a case of selecting your 11 most talented players it would be simple. But a team like that might well be without the grit, tenacity, graft and leadership that is needed.
It's always a question of balance. As Lawrie McMenemy once said, "in every team you need 9 virtuoso and 2 roadsweepers".
And Curbs: "I expect my team to perform greater than its sum of parts".
Tough week for Brentford. Probably did enough from their away games at Leeds and us to get 4 points..........but they got 0. It's an unforgiving league.
I really hope we don't have a winter recall clause in Gallagher's contract.
As good as he is I don’t think we have to worry about him going back to play for Chelsea’s first team. Out of the five loaneds I’m more concerned about Cullen being recalled. West Ham will probably want to sell him to get a decent fee before his contract ends.
Chelsea's starting line-up today had an average age of 24 years and 208 days - their youngest in the Premier League since February 1994. Mason Mount their MOTM is 20 years old and the scorer of two Tommy Abraham 21. Lampard will play the youngsters which is why I hope Gallagher is not recalled in January.
The official Charlton handbook claims Dillon Phillips came from the academy.
I reckon thats wrong. We got Dillon from Amazon, because he is on fire!!!!!
Thought it was Dillon's worst ever game for us actually... His distribution and decision making for about 70mins was shocking e.g. coming for a ball between a Brentford player and Pearce (?), left himself in no mans land and luckily the ball sailed over
Was the last 20mins when he really came to life and made some excellent saves, something we've not seen before
Were we lucky? They had all the possession but Phillips only made two saves, one looked like it was going over. We defended well and carved them open for our goal. They didn’t carve us open like that.

Serves them right
Phillips made two save but the defence made at least 6. 3 points is 3 points and the records will show a one nil win.
Now with added .gif (can't include the Cullen and Williams tackles that were instrumental in catching Brentford on the back foot as I'm limited to seven second clips):
"the best team always wins, the rest is only gossip"
We didn't play at all well but we scored 100% of the goals and that is all that counts.
Brentford's 3-5-2 and press aimed to stop us playing like we did on Wednesday and it worked.
Bees were as good as we were bad but we looked slightly better when we matched them up and was when we created the best chance of the game for either side, and our only chance.
Lovely give and go and a striker's finish. Had Gallagher at 11-1 for first and last goal so triple pleased.
Leko had been poor but we lack pace without him.
Hemed looked good but had little to work with.
Philips let one bounce off his chest but made two good saves and caught or punched any high balls that came near him. He'll get the usual "poor distribution" nonsense but 1 he's not Glenn Hoddle 2 long kicks when we have one striker up against three centre halves is always going to favour the defence but that's why they pressed us.
Defence resolute. Give them a medal.
We will have to do a lot better but do far so good. What we lack in pace and skill we made up for with fight and effort.
Brentford were the best team we have played so far and anybody can easily say they took us to school. Indeed it can be argued they took us to baby shower, nursery, kindergarten, infant junior and secondary school, college, Uni, Oxbridge, the Sorbonne and Yale.
Any Brentford fan will be saying WTF? Whaaaaaaaat? Faaaaaaaaaarkkk, and beezollocks.
I wouldn't blame them, they may ask what else they could've done, the answer is they only made two mistakes all game, failing to score and letting us score.
All the cliches can be rolled out, and I am sure Brentford fans will have loads of things to complain about, what about this, what about that? But were we really 'lucky', were they really 'unlucky'? There was some kind of proper spiritual synergy going on, crowd, management and players. We have recent resilient resources to call on built up under Bowyer, and as the great man says himself about our players. 'They are winners.'
The way we defended, especially in that spell late on when the Brentford players seemed to be forming an orderly queue to equalise and we were dead on our feet, was simply cosmic. Every single man jack of them were not going to go down without giving everything they could, and if the cliche 'fortune favours the brave' is true, we saw that made manifest today.
Brentford must have had well over 60% possession, they had a telepathic understanding of where each other was, usually in a useful and dangerous space and position, they were skilled, competitive and simply very very good. As I say they are the best team we have played so far, but were they better than us and deserving of the win?
I would say no, only because in a game of football there are a lot of elements that come into play, and their strengths weren't quite good enough and our strengths were, just!
As for the players. Well Dillon was superb, and made at least two great saves, Lockyer gave the ball away first half, but don't worry folks, it was simply to demonstrate that his fantastic ability to tackle back is in Lockyers locker. Purrington had to be on his toes all game, and Captain Pearce is quite simply a force of nature defending like he did today. Osilaja going off posed a lot of in play problems for Bowyer that became challenges for him throughout the game, but c'mon guys, what about Lapslie? Not a right back, thrown on, and he played with that kind of commitment and ability against their most dangerous attacking area. In terms of attitude Lapslie is Jason Pearce's love child. Taken all things into consideration you could argue a case for George as man of the match. In midfield Brentford were terrific and for us it was nip and tuck all game, yet almost ironically our winning goal was trademarked our midfield, with brilliant work from Williams and a lovely finish from Gallagher. Leko was less effective, and Pratley was a kind of shoring up presence, and Cullen, good throughout, was also well tested throughout. And Lyle was Lyle without the usual goal to show for it. I feel sure that a lot of Brentford fans will be rushing to judgement regarding Lyle based on this one match, but we know the truth about Taylor don't we guys? Lyle was simply good, yet again...yet again.
Possibly one of the great aspects of the day is that we kept a clean sheet. Oh. And we got the three points!
Just got home and have barely ever been so proud of 14 players and their coaching staff. We won that on hard work, guts and sheer determination. Those players were shattered after 50 minutes from Wednesday and they just refused to give that lead up. Tom Lockyer and Jason Pearce were absolutely immense!

Felt way too hot watching, so must've been murder for the players, especially just 3 days since the last game.
Lockyer turning into a class signing.

Bowyer seems to have the same philosophy.
Onwards and upwards.

They deserved something, do I give a fuck, no.
COYR
Well done kid.
Today he was Man of the Match for me, blocked absolutely everything and made ANOTHER last ditch tackle similar to the one he made on Wednesday
Turning into a great replacement for Bauer!!
Aint no body like George Lapslie.
