My eldest treated me to a rendition of two new songs he's learned on the piano:Wake Me Up and The Drugs Don't Work. Jeez, what was he trying to tell me?

I didn’t think too much of The Drugs... until I found out what it’s about. Now I think it’s a beautiful song but too haunting to listen to.

I can 100% relate it to personal experience as well, which is all I can think about when I hear it. Definitely brings a lump to the throat.
I was eight when this came out and one lunch time in the junior school dinner line two girls standing behind me tapped me on the shoulder and handed me a note, which read, 'we love you.' fantastic, a twosome at such a tender age!
The very next day standing once more in the dinner line, the very same girls tapped me on the shoulder and handed me another note which read, 'we don't love you anymore' absolutely devastated, the heartache was unbearable.
I cried and cried to this song over and over again, first loves are always the most painful, sadly I never recovered.

Martin Rossiter - Three Points on a Compass
Is this not the saddest song ever written? It describes how he feels about his father. Incredibly frank.
Martin Rossiter, the only person who rivals some of my most favourite old Charlton players as someone I don't know but 'love'
The most under-rated songwriter of all time.
I'm learning to play the piano chiefly so that I can play his music

It's a bit long but just leave it playing as you read Charlton Life.
