Honestly didn't think there were any Charlton fans left in Woolwich, seems to be a heavy muslim community there now.

Didn't think they had much interest in football. And no, that's not racist.

    It is.

Most of my muslim friends are very interested in football.
The point being, how many percentage wise come to The Valley on a very regular basis ?
How many percentage wise are S/T holders ?
That's wasn't the point though, was it.

"They" don't have much interest in football is just a lazy generalisation.  OK "some" or even "many" might not be interested in Charlton or coming to the Valley but that's not the same as not having much interest in football.  And the same applies to the majority of "Christian" people in Woolwich too.

Some Muslims like football, some don't, same for Jews, Christians, Atheists and just about everyone else.  No need to generalise.
Quite. A difference between a lazy generalisation and accusing someone of msking racial comments.

I wish they weren't any religions & everyone could just go about there business without the unnecessay accusations.

I agree but unfortunately the former too often lead into the latter.

As you say the comment was unnecessary.

The wording was not thought through, but the meaning was clear if you don't have an agenda.

It is quite clear that our support is under represented by ethnic minorities for a SE London club.

What the reasons are for that are not so clear.

What is clear to me is people calling out racism, without good reason, which undermines the cause of preventing actual racism.

So everytime we get mention of Woolwich it's ok to get remarks about somalis, yemen, bring your passport? And these are repeated remarks sometimes by the same individuals on the same thread. Ok some people are just lazy or stupid or provocative in using these terms in this context but actually that is casual racism and worth calling out even if that is slightly annoying or tiresome for some. It is I think part of the reason why our support is not representative of the area.  'Actual racism' as covered end calls it, is never far behind,  and we do get bad incidents occurring from time to time. So sorry to be a bore, but that is what I think and wanted to clarify.

I was born in Woolwich in 1957 and supported Charlton from 1967/68 season. As a few have mentioned having a family of my own and work put me on a path of moving from Woolwich to Welling, then to  Bexleyheath, out to St Mary’s Platt and finally where I am now in Mereworth.

    Do I miss Woolwich...no. Would I move back....not a chance.

This thread has begun so badly it's forced me to like an Irving post ffs

Anyway, I live a literal stone's underarm toss from SE18 and regularly haunt the place. Can I be an honorary Woolwichian?
  • I was born at the British Hospital for Mothers and Babies on Samuel Street in 1948. My parents lived in the Charlton Park area until the mid 50’s when they moved out to Slade Green.

Yeah, now  just seen that post.

I'd left the thread open while I had my dinner and it doesn't update itself - so I hadn't seen any new posts which had crossed my post.

When I moved from the Yemen with my family we gravitated to Woolwich for two good reasons, the Mosques and Charlton Athletic Football Club,,,

In 1972-74 I used to work for the Woolwich Equitable at Equitable House opposite Woolwich Arsenal station.
Every morning I'd get the 51 bus from Welling.

I'm sure people are desperate to know that.

    Really - a pub?

Remember it being an iconic 1930s Art Deco building, untouched inside and out.
Real modernist period piece (oxymoron?) even back in the early 70s.

    @Oggy Red

Pub and various shops downstairs, offices (I do some work for a charity based there) on the middle floors and flats being finished on top floors.

    You might not recognise it.

PS my older brother, Valley Party candidate lives in Woolwich, my son wants to but can't afford to.

Mum's been in The Elephant & Castle this afternoon for a G&T, wonder what they made of each other
  • (No jokes about my username) I’m risking sounding really stupid here. I sort of live in Woolwich. I’m kind of in an area that I don’t think is in Charlton or Woolwich, although my wife says it’s Charlton. No one really seems sure. We’re next to Hornfair Park, which, according to the Greenwich Council website, is in Charlton despite having an SE18 postcode (same with the lido).

So, I’m local. Grew up in SE18 and live there now. Love being able to walk to and from home games.
  • Live in SE18. Plumstead Common.
    Plenty of Addicks round here.
