I think he was the player we put money into a bucket so the club could buy him, or has my memory completely gone
I can recall the pleas to put a few coins in a bucket .. just a reminder that the current 'financial crisis' is just the latest in a long line. Our beloved club has spent many a year in intensive care so far as cash is concerned
Now here's a little story To tell it is a must About an unsung hero Who scores his goals with lust
Some people talk of Gilzean Others talk of Law Our old Ron don't earn much All he does is score
(Two three four)
Saunders is the king Saunders is the king Ee ey addio Saunders is the king
Ron cut a stocky figure and his low centre of gravity made him a human bulldozer, especially on muddy grounds, and very difficult to knock off the ball. Nonetheless, he was superb in the air. I remember a friendly against the Belgian team La Gantoise. Down 2-0 at half-time CAFC turned on a wonderful second-half performance and Ron scored the third, a real beauty. A corner dropped near the spot and Ron launched himself at the ball, He met it horizontally at knee height, at right-angles, and it flew in like a cannon shell. I also recall a quagmire at Brisbane Road in Feb 66, Ron as unstoppable as a tank and scoring the winner.
Very small for a centre forward which completely belayed his very astute heading abilities, he was a real all action battler who always put in a honest 90 minute performance, scored some very good goals and became a firm favourite with us Addicks.
