We've been awful at set pieces for years, last person able to score from a freekick was JJ.
JJ scored two freekicks ever for us (the one that went in off Racon is obviously Racon's goal), they just happened to be in consecutive weeks against the Sheffields so everyone talks of him like he was some free kick wizard. He was generally really quite bad at them. Bulot, Kermorgant, Holmes, even the accursed Taylor were far superior. Even Naby Sarr has scored 50% of the direct free kicks JJ has

Well either way, none of those players were very recent. Certainly not looking to start the next Forum row over it.
Just to prove how bad we have been this season. We have conceded the joint highest xG from set pieces in the league this season. And from our own set pieces have created the second lowest xG from set pieces
Obviously we're only a few games into the season but don't expect those stats to move much after 20 odd games, given what we've seen in previous years.
I remember when we were complaining about this last season (and that was with the added height of Stockley, Leaburn & Innis in the team), management said that Anthony Taylor was in charge of set pieces. I'm assuming he still is, because they are still bad.
Completely agree that looking into a set piece coach is surely worth the money if they could possibly net you 10 goals over the season.
I hope this gets brought up at the next supporter-management meeting. We can't continue as we are.
You're not going to score from every direct free kick, indeed most direct free kicks at our level. But the two in the last 2 games from Payne and May were atrocious, as if neither player had taken one for years.
Since he was mentioned a while back and i looked into his stats and how he plays
Owen Moxen pay what they want and get him in ! Would solve so many of our issues including set pieces !! if we mean business this season a deadball/assist specialist would be a massive statement

Terry Taylor has signed. That's who we've got for the role.
While I agree our set-piece crosses has generally been poor for a while, Fraser is more than capable of scoring from free kicks and has.
It's something we could focus on more, but given that we're a smaller side than we were, I don't think it's worth it. We're infinitely more dangerous using quicker passes and whipped low crosses than anything in the air.

He could be that man but in his small cameos so far i havent seen that part of his game
if we had both challenging and pushing eachother it would be ideal !

We're not in a position to sign players literally just to take set pieces
With set pieces, it's not just about the delivery, as just as important are the runs all the other players make, how opposition players are legally blocked off etc. We need to be much better than we've shown in the first 4 games of the season.

No but we are in a position where we need significant improvement in all aspects of play
if you have a look and watch what moxen can bring it will be more than just set pieces anyway
Our blithering uselessness with corners was thrown into stark relief in the last 2 games. At Peterborough, they tried a short corner routine at which we sent out one man. They bypassed him with a simple one-two and put a decent delivery into the box which resulted in a chance. They repeated this a further 3 times with the same outcome, whilst nobody in the team or on the bench had the wherewithal to counter. We tried the same thing against Rovers and made a complete pigs ear of it. I said in another thread though, it's not just the delivery and invention we are lacking. It's also having somebody with the belief and determination to make it their mission to get on the end of corners or crosses. And as Killerandflash alluded, a little bit of cuteness and subtle blocking off or shithousery. It's not just about having big men, you need a few big personalities. People who attack the ball with the confidence they are going to win it.

We laugh at shit crossbar challenge attempts but they're on par what's served up the professionals tbf
Good to see him acknowledging the issue. I hope he's not pinning all his hopes on Taylor, but it would be good if Taylor can give us a more consistent and decent delivery from corners for a start.
Need more consistent delivery, better communication and more movement in the box - even if there's a decent near post or far post delivery it's odds on no-one will be on that post attacking the ball.
The Swedish LB in the recent World Cup had a 95% success rate with corners from the right. Only one went into the side netting out of 20 corners. The others found the team mates in goal scoring positions.
Does my nut in when a team of professional footballers can't find two players who can put the ball into the danger area. If the opposition have a 6ft 5in defender on the near post then take him out of the equation.
Movement from the attackers is paramount but why not practice, practice, practice ? Defending and attacking and delivery of Corners and free kicks as so many goals are scored from set pieces.
Terry Taylor put a couple of decent corners into the back post at the end of the Fleetwood game. Both of them found the Charlton man and nearly resulted in shots on goal from knock downs.

Him and C. Cambell were definitely a breath of fresh air in the corner taking department last match, was sick and tired off balls not making it past the first man.
Haven't read the whole thread but agree, nearly 4 years on, this is still available and absolutely worth a read. Which of the key ingredients detailed here are now missing one wonders.. (if any)
First big test for Appleton this week. Stevenage have created the most xG from set pieces (4.02) in league 1 and scored the most goals (5) from them. Their centre back Piergianni already has 1 goal and 2 assists after scoring 7 last season in league 2. Hopefully we are doing some serious work on the training ground this week…

6% appears to be the magic figure for free kicks around the box as in April 23 the xG for scoring free kicks from around the area is 1 in 17 attempts.
I would have thought that Beckham and Ward-Prowse would have a higher than 6% success rate 🤔
