I know I know there is a thread somewhere... But just wanted to say that Nina Simone cover (if that's what we call it) of 'alone again' Leaves me speechless...
Is that the Gilbert O'sullivan song?
Yes - sorry, was a little bit shipwrecked last night... 'Alone again Naturally '

Song to the Siren (Tim Buckley) - This Mortal Coil Hallelujah previous mentioned and completely agree, so had to mention his dad above as someone covering his song! 2hb (Brian Ferry) - Julia Holter
Walk on By - Stranglers Shipbuilding - Robert Wyatt Dear Prudence - Souixsie and the banshees. There she goes - Sixpence none the wiser. I don't wanna talk about it - Rod Stewart
Great version, best for me is by Richard Popcorn Wylie, a Motown release soon after the original by Barrett Strong also on Motown. Bizarre they thought they could get a hit so soon after the original release.

Didn't know how to classify it, was in tears so didn't care...
Some great suggestions, some unbeatable, But stumbled upon this recently. It reminded me of how much I liked All The Young Dudes (Mott the Hoople) when it was first released.
This live version comes from the Freddie Mercury tribute concert and features Ian Hunter, David Bowie and Mick Ronson, who was seriously ill at the time.

Too late to rename the thread, but good point.
In this case the Mott version is the original as written for them and released first.
