Nick Cave has done some great covers. In particular I'd pick Avalanche (Leonard Cohen), In The Ghetto (Mac Davis/Elvis Presley) and Long Black Veil (Lefty Frizzel, popularised by Johnny Cash). The best in terms of re-working a song though is his version of Disco 2000 (Pulp) which he converted to 3/4 time.

Great back story although in Bobby Fuller's case it was the gangsters that won. Even better than the Clash version and I love the Clash.
