Phillip: 8 what a save Matthews: 8.5 MOTM thought he was outstanding today Lockyer: 7 Pearce: 7 Sarr: 7 Doughty: 6.5 probably the first time he has made some bad decisions, could have ended the game if he played in green a little earlier Pratley: 8 what a player he is Cullen: 7 so good to have him back, what a difference he makes Williams: 7 ditto to Cullen Green: 7.5 good goal Taylor; 7.5 proved why it was so important to keep him. Nothing but love for him Forster-Caskey: 6 Referee: 6.5
Phillip: 9 - +1 for that low level save, just absolutely brilliant. Matthews: 7 Lockyer: 7 Pearce: 7 Sarr: 7 Doughty: 8 - love his runs along the wing but needs to look for support, or head towards the box instead of the corner flag Pratley: 8.5 - he's an animal, love the fighting spirit he puts in and really is making a huge contribution this season Cullen: 7 Williams: 8 - will always and forever love this guy. Game changed when he came off, he just offers so much and scares the life out of the opposition Green: 9 - really liked him today, great performance! Taylor; 8 - +1 for how he wound up the Barnsley fans today, good to see him back Forster-Caskey: 7 - had moments of potential, too late to make an impact though
Phillip: 9 what a save Matthews: 7.5 Lockyer: 8 solid Pearce: 7.5 also solid Sarr: 7 no mistake Doughty: 7.5 relieved pressure well Pratley: 9 he’s just huge for us Cullen: 7 not his best Williams: 8 drew so many fouls Green: 9 like him lots Taylor; 9.5 MoM brings so much to this team Forster-Caskey: 7 Referee: 5 very annoying
Phillips: 7.5 - One brilliant save, could have done better for their goal. Absolute top level shithousery in the second half timewasting. Matthews: 7.5 - Brilliant first half, wasn't so present in the second as Barnsley started to drive through the middle. They had absolutely no joy down that flank all game. Lockyer: 7 - strong all game, played some good balls up the pitch. Pearce: 7 - Solid, perfect for this game. Sarr: 7 - Strong all game and looked to play out when he could. Tried one cross-field ball that was hilarious though. Doughty: 6 - Really quick and broke well but wasted every opening he had by not getting his head up. A bit hesitant in the challenge too, he'll learn. Pratley: 7.5 - His usual self. Some brilliant wins in the middle of the park. Cullen: 7 - Looked tired towards the end but put himself about off the ball and played some great balls up. Williams: 7 - Controlled the game with his running and scared them all game. Shame he had to come off but the precaution had to be taken. Green: 7.5 - Quick and direct, and strong holding up the ball. Looked like a Leko who can play with his back to goal, which is great. Taylor: 7.5 - Worried them the whole time he was on and got his goal. Showed just what he brings to us.
Forster-Caskey: 5 - Disasterpiece. He wasn't going to replace Williams' running on the ball but he could have done something. Poor defensively and offered nothing going forward.
Hemed: 6 - Adapting but looked decent in bursts. Suffered from the fact the team went to pieces creatively before he came on.
Purrington: 6 - Added some stability in his brief cameo.
Referee: 5 - Total mess. Gave us too much in the first half to be honest and then balanced it out in the second. Bottled sending off Sollbauer who had no justification for staying on.
Phillips 7.5 - Amazing save, looked a certain goal.
Matthews 7.5 - Another good display. Lockyer 7 Pearce 7.5 - Better. Sarr 7 Doughty 7 - Showed his inexperience at times, but will be quality for us I'm sure. Pratley 8 - Everywhere. Cullen 7 Williams 7.5 - Our drive disappeared when he went off. Green 7.5 - Prefer him to Leko. Taylor 7.5 - Won a number of free kicks.
Forster-Caskey 6 - Glad to see him get some game time, but it should've been Ozthumer on for Williams. Ref. 6 - Mixed bag.
Phillips: 8 one fabulous save, kicking better Matthews: 8 no doubt our best right back Lockyer: 7 solid, deserved booking Pearce: 7.5 a real leader Sarr: 7 no howlers, but a few missed tackles Doughty: 6 disappointing today Pratley: 9 MOM immense Cullen: 8 everywhere Williams: 8.5 pure class Green: 8.5 showed what he has today Taylor: 8.5 essential Forster-Caskey: 6 hard act to follow Referee: 6 decent but bottled the sending off
Phillip: 8.5 - didn't really put a foot wrong. Distribution was okay given swirling wind. Would like him to dominate his box more. One phenomenal save. Matthews: 6.5 - did okay but offered little going forward given he was a wing back, rather than a full back. Lockyer: 7 decent game, early booking meant he had to pull out of the challenge that led to their goal. Pearce: 7.5 leaders performance, but wish he'd push midfielders forward when they're dropping deep. Sarr: 6.5 - did okay, few hairy moments, good in the air. Doughty: 6.5 - v good first half, tried to do too much in the 2nd and rightly subbed after tiring. Needs to learn to look up when he's running with the ball, if he had then Green could have had a hattrick. Great taltent though. Pratley: 9 - this guy continues to amaze. All action performance. Joint MOM Cullen: 7 - good first half, worked v hard but lost shape in middle after Williams went off and JFC came on. Williams: 8 - guy is the most talented player on the pitch. Makes a huge difference. Green: 9 - Joint MOM. Good goal, but his work ethic pace, strength and tactical know-how saw him constantly stretch the defence. V impressed, and to put in that performance after a family bereavement he deserves all the plaudits. Taylor: 8 - great performance, good finish, constant handful. Wonderful reception for Lyle and he repaid it, and was visibly greatful for the support. We took him off too soon. Forster-Caskey: 5.5 - clearly not at match fitness. Some neat touches and showed intelligence, but a long way off full fitness. Good goal line clearance. Referee: 5 - confusing. Should have seen a red card for Barnsley defender in the first half for 3 or 4 bookable offenses. Should have booked Phillips for incessant time wasting (Not that I'm complaining)
Hemed: 5 - couple of times when worked gsrd to ger a good touch, created one chance, but overall didn t add much. We missed Lyle and his ability to pre-empt the play and make things happen. Purrington: not much time to make a difference, but needed to come on for Alfie who was knackered and I think struggling with the mental side of playing to hold on to a lead. He will learn though and Purrington didn't let us down.
Phillips: 8 extra mark for one worldy save Matthews: 8 solid Lockyer: 7 good Pearce: 7 strong Sarr: 7.5 decent nabs Doughty: 7 mixed bag Pratley: 8.5 motm everywhere Cullen: 7 not 100 yet Williams: 7.5 wins more fouls than messi Green: 8 tireless Taylor; 8 lobe the guy Forster-Caskey: 5 off the pace Referee: 5 meh
Phillips 8 - MOTM - Couple of absolute worldies kept us in it.
Matthews: 7.5 - Very solid. Very composed on the ball which lets us turn defense into attack. Good recovery pace. Brilliant signing.
Lockyer: 6.5 Didn't notice him much, in part because nothing came down his side. But he's not a great backs to the walls defender (more on that later), and as such these games where we sit in our own 18 yard box for 30 minutes don't suite him. Which brings us to:
Pearce: 7 - The reason we sit in our own 18 yard box for 30 minutes. He is a blood and thunder, backs to the wall defender. And he's good at that. The problem is, he drops, and he drops, and he drops, and he drops because he wants the opposition to play in his 18 yard box, where he can't be undone by pace or 1-v-1 defending. And that forces the whole team to drop. Look at their goal, he backs off and backs off and backs off, eventually forcing Lockyer to go to the ball, drawing Sarr in who thought Pearce was gonna go, and they score. Great header for the assist, and cut out a couple of good crosses, but as we rebuild a midfield to play through, the fact is, as a team, we play better without Pearce.
Sarr: 7 - Solid if unspectacular. Won a fair few headers but never seemed to get enough on them.
Doughty: 7 - He did really well, he just didn't pick his head up twice or we would have had a much easier last 10 minutes.
Pratley: 8 - ::Grumbles:: He was very good. Another who plays better when we're backs against the ball and he has to chase and break up play and not worry about possession. With the likes of Cullen and JFC and Williams and Field coming back, his lack of technical ability shouldn't be as apparent too. Full credit to him, he never stops.
Just realized he's 34. I'm going to be 34 in a couple weeks. Makes me rate him even less (out of spite).
Cullen: 7 - We've missed him. He was about half a yard off the pace. For their goal, and a couple of other times, he went to win the ball back and didn't quite get there. A sign of rust and coming back from injury. But a fully fit Cullen doesn't allow for nearly as many breakaways. He will be fitter for the experience today.
Williams: 7 - A clever player who works hard on both sides of the ball. We've missed him badly as well.
Green: 7.5 - Looks good. Looks good up front, looks like a nightmare to play against, great goal, great ball for Cullen.
Taylor: 8 - Oh yeah, transfer and contract rumours aside, he's actually quite good. Worked his bollox off. Brilliant goal. Led from the front. And has a great knack for, ahem, winning fouls (and I'm not here to knock it, Green, for example, should have gone done when he was through and there was contact).
Forster-Caskey: 6 - Hassled and harried but looked badly off the pace. To be expected from someone who has missed nearly a year and a half of football. Remember that the player who was absolutely brilliant, fit, fast, tenacious, and excellent technically down the stretch in 2017-18 is still in there.
Hemed: 5.5 - Not really his fault, and did well to chase and play Green in at one point, but we were backs against the wall by the time he came on. Referee: 7 - Barely noticed him, which is a good thing.
At the Valley or on a live stream, your marks please, edit 11pm: I should have included Hemed so have done rather late in the day, if you wish to go back and give him a mark please do so
Phillips: 9 three points due to him and some very good distribution. Matthews: 7 Lockyer: 6 Pearce: 6 Sarr: 6.5 Doughty: 7 Pratley: 7.5 Cullen: 6.5 Williams: 6.5 Everytime he received the ball we won a free kick Green: 7,5 Taylor; 7 Forster-Caskey: 5 Hemed 5 Runs about but never looks like doing anything significant.
