I'm guessing one of the tabloids had a story on him they were maybe going to run and he's been given the opportunity to speak first.
Fair play to him, can't have been an easy thing to do. Married for 27 years
I don't think that's the case. I am in the TM production office today, sounds like this was in the pipeline for a while. Everyone here is giving him applause when he walks past which is nice.
Well I'm glad he seems to have sorted out whatever was going on between himself and Ruth & Eamonn. Whether rumours or not, there's been a lot in the press about their relationship. No one needs stuff being bandied about like that.
Good luck to him. Brilliant at what he does and only ever made one, stupid error of judgment in nearly forty years of presenting live TV.
What was that?
Caught at it with Gordon the Gopher.
He was fisting Gordon for years so this news is hardly a shocker.
I watched the Michael Barrymore documentary. This story would have been huge twenty years ago but we've become far more accepting. All the best to Phillip.

I’m only a freelancer and don’t really speak to them much, but I do see the four of them interacting. Never seen anything to imply the stuff I see on the cover of gossip magazines is close to true. I picked one up once while I was in a queue at the shops. “Insiders of the TM production team say the tension is unbearable!” - made me laugh. Nobody here is tense about anything other than their hair!

What was that?
One stupid interview with the (then) Prime Minister, where he thought it was a good idea to hand him a list he'd "got from the internet" of paedophiles; and the camera was able to pick out at least one of the names on the list, who he (and ITV) had to pay a massive compensation to.
It was a stupid thing to do; but, other than that, I think he's been a terrific TV presenter for nearly four decades.
I have a friend who stumbled across her husband's gay porn sites on their ipad - after nearly 25 years of marriage. Fair to say she is still recovering from the shock (three years later) that her whole adult life was based on someone else's lie. Meanwhile he is off and happily shacked up with his boyfriend while she hesitates at the idea of internet dating in her early 50s. Pretty tragic, actually.

obviously i don't know the circumstances but i do find all the good for him, she probably knew for years comments rather strange.
for all we know she has just discovered 27+ years of her life has been a complete lie
It would appear to me that he’s most likely bisexual.
Unlikely as he says he's gay. He said he has never had any secrets from his wife Steph, so I take from that she has always known.
It comes as no surprise to me as I've always suspected he was gay. I said so to my wife, just before they said he was making an announcement, that he'll be announcing he's gay.
Good luck to him.
I'm still waiting for Cliff Richard to "come out", but doubt he ever will.
As none of us are married to him or otherwise affected by this 'revelation', who gives a toss?
I think it’s very sad that people still feel the need to hide their sexuality and live what must be a very difficult and frustrating life. Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone felt comfortable to be whatever they want without the scrutiny and judgement of society. Clearly that’s still not the case. Rights for LGBT have advanced incredibly over the last few years but until this is a completely non subject we are not where we need to be.

If he's known for a long time and not told her then it would be very hard on her - only he knows the full situation.

I'm not quite sure she'd agree with him on that one........

But who has he been hiding his sexuality from?
It might have been fairly recent that he realised he was gay. And it's not as if it would make much difference to how much TV work he'd get, considering how much work the likes of Graham Norton, Rylan, Judge Rinder, Alan Carr, Sue Perkins, Clare Balding etc get, and all on mainstream TV too

Only he can answer how long he's known and his issues in coming to terms with it. I hope for his wife's sake that he's been as open and honest as possible - difficult for them both.

He only recently realised he was gay ?
I've never heard of that before, every gay person I've heard speak on the matter have known from either young childhood or teenage years at the latest.
I'm happy to be corrected.
Anyway, he implied that his wife Steph has always known, as "we've never had any secrets".

No person should have to hide their sexuality these days surely.
