They can only perform against the opposition in front of them but good to see David Willey mop up the Irish with such aplomb. How many more chances is Bairstow gonna get? Yet again missing a straight ball and by a distance. He and James Vince find their own special ways to get out whatever the format. Bairstow's lockdown not been as beneficial as Willey's. The poor opposition gives the selectors a couple more chances to see if JB can recover any form before proper opposition turns up in the form of Pakistan. Hard to see why though. Billings is just the first in a long line of wicket keepers who can actually bat. A non-batting wk at number 2 is nuts. Expecting another rout tomorrow.
Yeah but Vince is a better player so...why would they?
Vince looks a better player -until he plays one of those shots where he doesn't engage his brain. And he does it time after time after time as evidenced by the fact that he has just one 50 from 12 ODIs as opposed to Denly's four 50s from 13 ODIs.
Neither will be in the line up when all the superstars come back but there comes a time when "looking good" isn't enough.

When you aren’t needlessly having pops at root leftvright and centre, you do type sense. To be fair to bairstow, his one day record isn’t that bad. If you copied and pasted that into a message about test cricket, spot on

He's not in the current squad though. If you're going to pick someone else to replace Bairstow as opener, from the current squad, the next best available would be Moeen Ali.

I'd give Banton a go personally. These are strange times and we are looking to explore options for the future.

I don't agree that Bairstow should be replaced. But it's very constructive to suggest a replacement. Perhaps Banton could open with Bairstow, with Roy dropping to three.

Bairstow and Roy are one of the best opening partnerships in the world. Why change it?
It's pointless picking bowlers in home Tests to prepare for Australia in a year and a half unless the conditions match those in Australia as well, with flat bouncy pitches and little lateral movement
Quick bowlers like archer and wood are needed for oz, and hit the deck hard bowlers like tremlett and Finn did well there. I’d say Ollie Robinson and Craig Overton are probably what the selectors see as their successors.
They are, but in the most recent Test conditions meant that Woakes was far more dangerous than Archer
As long as we have the Duke ball and our pitches/overheads it's really difficult to prepare for down under.
Chris Tremlett hadn't played a test match or even been in a squad for nearly 3 years before the 2010/11 ashes. I'm not suggesting we do that with Archer and Wood but we certainly dont need to be playing them together in conditions that dont suit them.
Keep them in the squad, keep them involved. Play them when conditions suit I.e. when the pitches wont do too much so we need someone to offer something different when the ball gets old. Wood did well in SA, you need someone with pace and bounce in India. This also succeeds in managing their workloads and preventing injuries which is important given they play all formats and IPL etc.
Then come Austraila they will be ready to be unleashed together and with Stone and Mahmood as viable other pace options. Woakes showed in SA that he is learning to adapt to conditions abroad and his pace was up too. Stokes will be effective in any conditions in the world! I'm confident (barring loads of injuries) we will not be the dreadful one dimensional attack we have been on previous tours.

Precisely my point. Although there are some (one) on here who considers Bairstow is a non-batting wicket keeper.

He is in test cricket. One of the best in the world in odi’s
Did anyone see the cricket documentary a couple of days ago called The Edge? Thought it was brilliant. It chartered the rise and fall of the England team from getting bowled out for 50 against WI, to Flower taking over and England winning home and away ashes to become no. 1, then our subsequent fall to 5-0 in Australia, and the team falling to mental health issues (e.g. Finn, Trott, Panesar)

Roy has been out 15 times in the first over of an ODI since the 2015 World Cup - the next worse is Guptill with 6
Vince has only been out twice in his 16 ODI innings under 14 but has a top score of just 51 and averages 23
The former seems to go hard too early whereas the latter appears to get in and then get out. Roy is a proven one day international with an average of 41 who just needs to be a bit more circumspect in the first couple of overs. Yes it is a power play but you can afford to give yourself half a dozen balls to have a look. Vince just isn't good enough and has now been given over 50 Test, ODI and T20 opportunities to do so.

If Denly is recovered, no way can they drop Billings now surely?
Denly averages 34 after 16 ODIS with 4 50s (albeit at a lower strike rate)
Vince flatters to deceive, even more so than Denly! 29 now, so hardly a youngster either
