His stable (Minato Beya) was Ichinojo's stable (the huge, grumpy Mongolian who was a buddy of Terunofuji and won the July 2022 Basho - subsequently retired after falling out with his Master amid accusations of liking the hooch too much and not being disciplined with his training).

As i hoped they massively overpriced the tickets. This (fantastic) arena is about the same size as the O2 and the closed le balcony so we've moved to these amazing seats!
Also saw Onosato as i was queuing up.

That was superb! A single elimination 1 day tournament with all the Makuuchi (I think ) 6th round was the final with the higher ranks getting a first round bye.
Kotozakua of all people beats Kirishima in the final. Aonishiki hits the throw of the day on Ura, which i believe happened in London as well.1 -
That was fun. The early rounds were used to demonstrate techniques with no attempt made to hide it being scripted. Things got a bit more serious from the last 16 onwards and the last few bouts were indistinguishable from normal fights other than beaten wrestlers stepping out rather than risk injury to try anything drastic. Hoshoryu won the day but lost the grand final. The biggest cheer of the day was probably when the cameras found an extremely famous French judo star in the crowd, but then I guess the crowd were probably more familiar with judo than sumo. Amazing what a few Olympic medals can do for a sport's profile.
Not far off a sell-out today. A few empty corners, including around me as a lot of people deserted the balcony to find empty seats lower down. I was finding the seats a bit cramped so I stayed put and took advantage of the extra leg-room.
Nice to see the drumming, the belt-tying, the bow ceremony and so on.

Hard to judge much on the basis of exhibition bouts, but Onosato didn't seem fit in that he really did the minimum - pulled a henka in his first bout and then went down rather easily, shall we say, in the second one which was as far as he could go before things got a bit more serious. Hoshoryu and Aonishiki looked in reasonable shape although I have to suspect that Aonishiki coming up against Tobizaru relatively early on may have been intended as a way to limit how much he had to do.1

I'm not a big fan of Fujinokawa but his second kinboshi this Bashou was like something from the matrix! 😵💫1

Very sad about Wakatakakage's very serious thigh injury, sustained in pre-Basho practice. Required emergency surgery and, while they say he'll be out 2 months, in reality it could be career-ending.
Both times he's closed in on an Ozeki bid, he's been dealt a cruel injury. Very sad.1 -

Don't think I've ever seen a henka work on Aonisiki, despite his low head. Guess he's aware he could be vulnerable so has made himself adept at watching their feet. Always manages to follow and stay in front of them and thus turns the table on them.Friend Or Defoe said:

Up to day 9, surprised Shishi doing so well and good to see Takerufuji back. Think its wide open2

Day 11 and a humdinger of a bout between Shishi and Kotoeiho - bout of the Basho to date.
But I’ve got to say there looked to be a potential grabbing of the top knot by Aonishiki for 2 days in succession now, with no Judges’ review either time.
The bout today v Gonoyama was outrageous to allow to stand without even a review.
What with that and serving up pretty ordinary opposition for struggling-Kadoban Ozeki Kotozakura, it does seem like there’s some favouritism at work.
Dont think he’ll do it but I’d love Takerufuji to win it again. Or Kirishima to do so and make Yokozuna.
Should be another great climax.1 -

If Aonishiki wins in September the Yokozuna rank will be his. History in the making and surely the theme for a potential Hollywood film.1 -
