  • Without a similar salary cap in the Championship it doesnt make sense.
  • Considering Sunderland’s turnover would’ve included parachute payments, I don’t think that’s a fair representation of the situation. There is no way Sunderland’s turnover would be around £60mil in League One without the parachute payments.
  • Varney on the salary cap, including an explanation of how it’ll work for those clubs currently above the limit.

  • It's tricky but PFA will argue that it's restriction of trade for players, but given people have challenged the salary caps and been dismissed in other sports both Rugby codes spring to mind in this country there is a precedent set.

I think it can work BUT there needs to be way more detail and caveats.  Homegrown players not counting against the cap for example, It peanalises clubs like ours for creating our own talent and favours teams who wheel and deal in the market but don't invest in the academy. What is the point in an academy and producing players if they can't be retained due to salary cap?  But every season will be a lottery with a totally level playing field, impossible to plan longer term and large turn over of staff.  Relegation and Promotion both equally possible.

On the downside larger clubs like Sunderland, Hull, Portsmouth and Ourselves can easily become even more profitable for owners who may never harbour any desire to get promoted.  As with fixed stable costs and all that ticket money coming in it could be a nice earner for more owners.  It will then just be a feeder league.
  • There needs to be a salary cap across UEFA. It won't happen.
  • It is a restriction. But a necessary one as some clubs wish to take financial risks to gain an advantage.
  • I agree with him.  The bond should be lodged and cover all wages for a full season, preferrably two.  That's all wages including non-playing staff.
