Why are so many people not wearing face masks?

  • My concern is that if we have to wear facemasks in the open, then after the pandemic is over this will a) slowly creep into our culture and b) be required all the time to reduce other diseases, so the government can spend less on the NHS.

I do not want my children growing up in a society like that.
    Somewhat unlikely in the UK.
Some people aren't even wearing masks now, so I can't see them continuing after Covid.
    But who knows.
  • Just wondering, Is there a rule that allows staff in stations to be exempt from wearing masks. I may have missed it.

It's common in many cultures to wear a face mask when you yourself are ill to stop you spreading illness. I personally would like my children growing up in a society like that.
I imagine it would be considerate to wear one if you had a really bad cold or suchlike. I could agree.

I was talking more about it being mandatory or even becoming culture across the population even for a healthy person.

Where do you stop in that case, banning driving as it’s dangerous to others? Banning meat and junk food as they kill people? Ban alcohol as that does directly and indirectly also?

    The future looks bright.

I do want my children to grow up in a kind and considerate society, I just don’t think that has to include wearing masks when there are plenty of other dangers one can cause to others.

    I'll just leave this here...

  • Had someone tell me I couldn't pass them on the escalator this morning at London Bridge. We were both wearing masks and he just stood in the way when I tried to pass. Was polite and I wasn't confrontational but is passing someone on an escalator a faux pas?
The week starting 31/08 , they had both escalators going down so you could walk down one and stand on the other (stairs in the middle one side up the other down.

The following week they were running more trains and couldn’t possibly do it that way in the morning
  • Didn’t see a person not wearing a mask on my Southeastern train this morning. Seen 6/7 so far not wearing masks on the District Line.
  • The number of new cases is now around 3000 per day.

That's about 60% of the daily average in April when numbers were at their peak ... and it won't be falling anytime soon.

    I despair.
  • Ian Brown and Noel Gallagher are the authorities on this.

Being a south eastern man myself I can say similar. It's not like the trains are awash with people, but mask compliance is very high on them.

I've noticed less so on the District and Overground lines when I was on them.

Me too. I'm finding on the way into work early morning it's pretty much 100% compliant. On the way home, not so much.
  • Seem to be far more people in London not wearing masks.

What he probably means is that he want's his children to grow to maturity, living without fear. The idea of people wearing pointless bloody face masks for eternity is more frightening than the present virus - and any that may follow.
They can worry about global warming instead.

Conversely, I used a train from Victoria to Kent on Saturday, my experience is mask usage on the underground is a higher proportion that what I saw on the train and at Victoria.

My money's on the photo being used out of time for clicks and likes.

Yeah, i’m in Scotland and haven’t seen anyone not wearing a face covering. They have some nice Scottish themed buffs that look good.

'People living in fear of wearing face masks' - if that is all that they have to fear, then heaven help us. What a ridiculous statement to make, when we are in a major pandemic, that has caused so many people to die and will do so again, if idiots don't follow the rules that are there for the benefit of everyone.

Why have you put this in quotation marks? Neither this post nor the one that it referred to said this.

How many tests in April. The real unknown number was likely to be 100,000 a day, we are at 3%. I agree that the 3,000 figure is only heading in one direction at the moment.

    I like that one.
    The real likely number.

What addick19 is referring to, is my original post about post-pandemic mask wearing. I think the majority would agree that in the current situation we should follow the rules, even if we don’t like wearing them.

Again on my journey home, Southeastern trains full compliance, Underground about 15 people not wearing one.

Exactly. In the present crisis yes of course we should all be wearing masks. However I also agree with EastTerrace's comments about post-pandemic face masks creeping into our daily lives for ever and a day. That people, ain't living, it's just existing.

  • I think it is ironic that those who go about causing trouble with hoodies and face coverings ordinarily are the majority of those now not wearing a mask!

I expect they will ear a face covering when it suits them!
