As much as Sunderland are re-building, how about this for a team that doesn't know each other (League starts for us in last two seasons)?

    Amos (3)

    Barker (3)
    Oshilaja (22)
    Famewo (1)
    Doughty (23)

    Gilbey (2)
    Watson (0)
    Levitt (1)

    Maddison (0)
    Washington (3)
    Aneke (2)

In fact, from the whole of our squad of those who are likely to play, we will probably struggle to find more than three players who have started in the same side together 20 plus times - namely the three "Ps" Purrington, Pratley and Pearce - and one of those is out at the moment!

Preview up to your normal high standards, FA.

Scrappy game that we will win by the odd goal - 1-0 or 2-1

i think in the next few games we are going to see big chuks enter the charlton arena properly - like a gladiator entering the colloseum - he's going to rip it up and stake a claim as our main man up top

Sunderland never draw so I'll go 1-1.
2018/19 season they drew 19, more than any other team. The playoff final was a classic example. They started brightly, got an early goal, and sat back to defend the lead. Apparently that’s what they did all season.
Obviously under Parkinson things will be different. My Sunderland mate tells me they’ve started very slowly in all the matches so far, but finished very strongly. As we have tended to start well I’m going for 1-0 at half term, 1-2 at full time.

I don’t know if he will or not, but it is certainly his opportunity too.

This is a type of game where we normally get a result. Sunderland aren’t going to sit back and let us try and break them down, they’re going to try and be attacking as well. It will suit us, especially with the options we will have coming off the bench. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Williams, Maddison, and Aneke all coming off the bench in the second half. Three players who you know can make a big impact.

Sunderland have predominantly played with a back 3 under Parkinson for a little while. But their wing-backs are essentially full-backs pushed higher, so they will drop to a back 5 when they haven’t got to ball. In central midfield, they only have a two, and neither are exactly creative, Power probably the most out of them all. It’s really important that when we get the ball, we pass it quickly with intent. If we let them get into an organised state of defence, they will be hard for us to break down. The creativity of Oztumer, Williams, Morgan, and Maddison will be important, and the pace of Doughty especially so too.

I actually think Watson could be very important in this game. His experience in the midfield will help young Morgan and Levitt, and even Forster-Caskey if he plays too. As long as we don’t result to the way they want us to play, which is long balls up to the front three, we will be okay. Work through back to front and we have the better quality to do it.

One or two players are going to be left out, and I think Davison might just be one of them, even with Bonne leaving. Otherwise, maybe Lapslie with Davison coming on the bench for him. Will be interesting who misses out...

    Amos
    Oshilaja Pratley Famewo Purrington
    Levitt Watson Morgan
    Oztumer Washington Doughty

Maynard-Brewer, Barker, Lapslie, Forster-Caskey, Williams, Maddison, Aneke

    Charlton Athletic 1-1 Sunderland

I want to see a proper Astrit Ajdarevic performance from Maddison. Some great touches, maybe a goal then flat on his back, with a pie and a fag by the 20 minute mark.
Ajdarevic was the greatest character of our Duchatalet imports.   At his best he looked far too good for us but he didn't last long enough to make the impact he should have done.  Probably his most telling contribution was the corner from which Jacko scored his last gasp winner against QPR.  I also seem to remember a really funny  video of him arriving at the club in a taxi.  If only he could have lasted more than a quarter of the match!
Cracked in a lovely goal v Yeovil, who were relegation rivals. Won 3-2.

I would prefer to see Barker in the back four with Pratley and Watson patrolling in front with Levitt more of a free role with Oztumer and Doughty more withdrawn which will give their three at the back marking just Washington.
Taking your point about their defence preferring the long ball they will be out of luck. It would mean that we will have to be playing quick one twos to get through them or pace down the sides.
What a pity that Chucks and Maddison are not fit to start.

Not only do we not came back from a losing position I can't remember a substitute coming on & turning a game (apart from JW at Wembley), let alone scoring a goal.

Aneke came on against Wigan, we were done in that game... He bullied their defence and helped setup Bonne's last minute equaliser

I don't think so, KV - just online ordering of the hard copy.

Just a Doncaster got a hollow revenge for that semi-final so Sunderland will beat as when the game isn't as important.

    But it's a marathon not a sprint.

My view is our season will start in earnest after the international break when we’ve strengthened the squad. We missed too many chances last week and I can’t see us getting much change from a well organised Slumberland. Draw at best
  • Yes we don't want to rush signings, yes it's a long season etc

But disappointed that a week after the takeover we still don't have a right back.

Been waiting to use that one for a few days havent you?
  • 2-1 Charlton, Maddison (super sub) with the winner late on
Now that would go down very well  :)
  • As already commented above its a pity Chuks & Maddison are not fit to start.
Weak up front and a weak defence, i would bite your hand off for a draw.

We will be a different proposition  in 2 weeks time, in Bow's & Gallen we trust.
