Sorry if there is already a thread for both these players but it's both their birthdays today... Jorge 49th and Keith' 55th... Jorge Costa was and is possibly one of best defenders I've seen in Charlton colours... Don't need to write the lyrics to the song we all know it 😉 and I'm lucky I saw Keith live in Charlton colours as well, one of the underrated players I've seen. Both fantastic players and gave 100% for our football club.

  • I remember us beating Liverpool at home just after being promoted for the first time. Keith Jones ran the game.

the news of the world put Chris Powell in their team of the week as a central midfielder that’s when I learned that journalists are lazy and incompetent and only care about the big teams.

great player and underrated, I loved the way he flapped his wrists when running

I was never a fan of Keith Jones when he started playing for us, strangely I appreciated him more once I saw him train when watching a youth game at Sparrow Lane, he was doing “Doggies’ and just kept going & going, thereafter I appreciated more his effort and work rate and his will to do the simple stuff that gets un-noticed when playing with better flair and technical players.  When Leicester won the prem I watched them draw 1-1 at Bournemouth with Kante outstanding for Leicester that day, I remember thinking how similar, but of course a lot better, to Jones he was.

A great Pro who always gave 100% with something to prove and so typical of a Curbishley signing

I was lucky to see both in action, Keith definitely an underrated player and Jorge a legend in his own right and he hates F ing Millwall.

I ran into Keith at the sports facility where I played 8 a side. He was training some young kids, had a nice chat and said he enjoyed his time at Charlton and of course the Play Off final.

Costa could shield the ball out from the half way line. Amazing player.

Its been a long time since I read the Curbishley autobiography, so hope this is accurate.  There is a couple of time he mentions Jones.  Firstly, when he signs him for Southend and they go to negotiate wages and Jones says 'just pay me whatever everyone else is on' and another time where he is told to man mark Paul Gascoigne, he said Jones took the job so seriously, that when Gascoigne went to the side of the pitch to change his shin pads (or receive treatment or similar), Keith Jones followed him over and stood there while Gascoigne was out of the game.  Eventually Boro subbed Gascoigne off.

Jones and Kinsella were one of the midfield partnerships I can remember us having. Jones was so underrated - such a good player.

Keith Jones - the Sidewinder. Proper Curbs signing, £125k if I recall correctly, and paid that back many times over.

Was talking to a Benfica fan recently - he described Costa as "an animal" and said Sporting and Benfica fans really disliked him, probably for the same reasons that I liked him so much. Very much enjoyed watching him showing no respect at all to some very illustrious opponents, think Ruud Van Nistelrooy had a particularly hard time against him.

That Boro game was mint. Jonah marked Gascoigne out of the game. Pretty sure Gascoigne gave away a penalty and didn't come out second half. 1-1 draw, if I remember right?

I didn't realise how much we meant to Costa until I read his Instagram post when we got relegated. He described us as one of the two clubs of my heart. I guess that the other must have been Porto.
  • Keith Jones - so many of us saying how underrated he was, maybe that means he is actually rated!

Either way - that ball to set Mendonca clear at Wembley for goal 2. Top class

Keith Jones is my all time favourite player A vastly underrated player
  • I remember watching a reserve game down The Valley in the late 90s versus Southampton reserves.

Keith was captain and put as much effort and passion in as he would in the first team.

At one point a Southampton player stood over the ball to prevent a quick free quick and Keith ran from about 20 yards and pushed the bloke in the chest. He went flying! It was hilarious!  He got a stern talking to from the ref but no card (it would be a sending off these days).

In the second half one of the young Charlton lads ran into the box with the ball and had three players in the middle that he could have squared it to.  Instead he went for glory from a tight angle and the keeper saved it.  Keith shouted at the top of his voice "Pass the f***ing ball you c***!!"  Bearing in mind there were only about 50 people in the stadium it was very clear for all to hear.

I didn't see much else of the game as I was busy perving at Paul Sturgess's bird.

  • Keith Jones as people have said was massively underrated. However from several Q&A evenings with former players he certainly wasn't by his team mates.

Keith Jones was a terrific player for us who was an important part of the team that got us into the Premier League. Constant harassing of the opposition to stop them settling on the ball.

He also held the record, and possibly still does, of the longest period between consecutive appearances in the highest level in English football. He was part of the Chelsea team that was relegated from the old First  Division  in 1987 and his next appearance was in the Premier League With Charlton in 1998.

    Jorge Costa.....what can you say.
Never looked hurried or panicky, knew all the short cuts and more to get himself in exactly the right place over and over again......quite uncanny.
I’ve seen some great central defenders in my 63 years of attending The Valley but have no hesitation in saying he was the finest. He was a colossus in defence and led the line in unsurpassed pomp......what a player.
How close we were to seeing him and The Roof playing together......now that would have been something to behold!
Thanks for the memories Jorge, as brief as they were.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Don't forget it was Jorge Costa (allegedly), who advised Curbs to buy Ronaldo, (shame Curbs ignored him)

Loved Jorge Costa and, as mentioned above, he certainly feels the same way from comments he has made on his IG account. An absolute beast of a man, but he also had a brilliant footballing brain.  What a team we had then.

I was another to not really give Jonesy credit in the early days, but his work rate and just relentless pressure in a game were backed with a great passing ability.  Both superb players for us and many congratulations on the birthdays lads!  Saude!!

I wish I'd said that and got all the likes!

I think you're one of the most underrated posters on this forum IMHO @Algarveaddick
  • Portsmouth away one year Jones went off injured with fractured cheek bone taken to hospital and left there.Peter Burrows went down to hospital after the game to check on him ...Ended up at railway station with the player at about 1930pm.Only person Peter could find at the station was myself along with a few friends we had to look after Keith Jones on his way back home to Guildford.

I was left in change of the Charlton captain, god help him.
  • I wouldn't fancy being locked in room for 2 minutes with an angry Jorge Costa!
