  • TAA in by the sound of it.

Lingard reported to be missing out on the final cut. Would have taken him over Rashford personally.
Ward-Prowse also rumoured to be out.

Sounds like Saka is going if Greenwood and Lingard aren't, so that's one more right-back option to join the other 15.
    Saka is left sided.
It was more of a joke about how many RBs we have than me expecting him to genuinely play there, but as he's played RWB, right wing, left wing and left back, I reckon he could do a job there.
  • Can’t wait for TAA to provide the assist that wins us the tournament ;)
  • Can't lie I am gutted about Jesse Lingard. His resurgence this year has been lovely to watch. I'm not saying he would have started but just feel he can offer something different from the bench, with his creative runs and works well in a fluid forward line too. Real shame and gutted for him.
I like Lingard but don’t think he’s got anything in his locker that the other players in his position haven’t.
To be honest I think Lingard would be the perfect sub for Mason Mount during a match, especially if a game were to go the distance.

Seems Trent is going...unbelievably harsh on Trippier if he misses out, unless...four RBs :joy:
  • whatever the squad, we'll likely struggle against mighty Croatia, a land with a population about one half of Greater London's

Hehderson .. Walker Stones Maguire .. James Henderson Phillips Mount Chilwell .. Kane Calvert-Lewin

Annoyingly if that was the 3rd game, it may be one you look at the draw and think we wouldn't really be too bad losing.  But given it's the first one we need to try to get off to a good start.

Whats the population got to do with it?

is that a serious question ?

Huge underrated and unfairly mocked. For 60 minutes he ran Modric around in the semi final of the World Cup. Modric and Croatia only got into the game when he tired. Offers energy in the middle of the park which players outside of the premier league can’t handle. Disappointed he’s not going.
Did he really run Modric around ?  He’s got some good attributes - has an eye for goal and energy but I’m pleased he’s not going ahead of Grealish / Saka / Bellingham/ Sancho

Yes... Because if population is so important why arent China or the United States doing better at Football?

How are Belgium No.1 in the world with just 11m people compared to England with 55m people? - Sorry its a real hatred of mine when people moan about a country doing better than another just before there happens to be more people living there.
China and the USA don't have the same footballing culture Europeans do

Lingard is a very hard working player and at 28 should be at his peak .. I think he's suffered from odd selection and transfer policies at Man U, always being bypassed for exotic signings who all too often turn out to be duds. IF he makes the squad he'll let no-one down, though he would not be near my first choice eleven

Not historically you're right... But then I wasnt saying either that China or United States should be the best in the world given their populations, but they should be doing better than what they are, especially the United States given the fact they failed to qualify for the last World Cup what with the MLS having been established since '96 now.

Yet if we focus on the populations of Europe it shows that Iceland should never have been near the entire tournament in 2016 yet alone get as far as they did

    https://www.worldometers.info/population/countries-in-europe-by-population/

If people want to think that a country shouldnt be beating someone else because it has less people than somewhere else, then I dont know what to say... Yes the likes of Croatia and Iceland will have periods where their National Team isnt doing great (because that is when the dont have the populations levels to sustain the longevity of other Nations like England, Germany or France etc.), but it doesnt mean they cant produce a "Golden Age" of players that'll be able to go toe to toe with the larger nations.

^^^ the 'golden age' theory is your key point .. the (e.g ) Germanys, Brazils, Englands, Italys, Argentinas will always be thereabouts because of the traditions and club infrastructure. The Belgiums, Netherlands, Icelands now and again produce a 'golden generation' that blooms (excuse the mixed metaphors) for a few seasons then resorts back to mediocrity. Also, in my opinion, extreme national pride, in Croatia's case I'd say fervour, can be a major factor in sporting success. As well as those already mentioned, for example, look at tiny Uruguay bordered by big bullies Brazil and Argentina

To me, playing Trent only really makes sense if you’re playing a 3-4-1-2 with him and Shaw pushing high up the pitch on both wings. I don’t trust him as part of a back four, especially with our centre back options.

Walker could cover him well from the RCB position if that’s the case.

It would also allow a player like Grealish to roam the midfield hole in front of a holding pair like Henderson/Rice etc.
  • Gareth is going to pick all four right backs like the maverick he is. Three right backs for just in case and TAA in midfield in place of, I dunno, let's say Bellingham.
  • YouTube and Sky Sports having a nightmare with the live stream, keeps crashing.
  • Mings and Coady better than Tomori/Godfrey! Southgate having a larf
  • 4 right backs is mental. Just choose one to drop.
  • Four right backs Jeremy...that's insane!

Rumour that TAA is going as a midfield. Haven’t we learned from Sven that playing players in the wrong position is a mistake.
  • I'd have dropped a right back and taken Ward-Prowse.

    Apart from that, it's fine.
  • 4 right backs and 2 centre forwards. Gotta laugh
  • leaving out TAA would've been madness, would've bought undue pressure onto the team, particularly in that position. Squad looks good, ITS COMING HOME!
  • 4 right backs and 2 centre forwards. Gotta laugh
Hard to believe with an increased 26 man squad, he can still get the balance so wrong.
  • 4 right backs and 2 centre forwards. Gotta laugh
Kane, DCL & Rashford as a 3rd option.

We play one up top, there's basically 2 for every position and an extra 3 given it's 26 not 23 now, so the above feels reasonable.

Feels like we're light in midfield though - 5 players for 3 positions if you count Grealish & Foden as options further up, which the announcement (and Southgate) seem to do.
  • Squad numbers out..most notable for me: Jack Grealish 7. Beautiful.
  • Glad Saka has gone. Such a versatile footballer.

Would’ve taken Ward Prowse over one of the RBs.

I worry the 10 defenders means we're looking at 352 with Rice, Henderson, Mount in front of them, and one of Foden or Sterling supporting Kane.

    Hopefully I'm wrong.
