Hard to predict how we will do this year. Get our attack firing and we have as good a chance as anyone.

I’d be happy with a Semi Final with some attacking football on show. I don’t think we are far off being a top side in all honesty.
I worry about our centre backs v decent opposition.

Squad doesn’t look to bad, where would people say our biggest weaknesses are?

Middle of the park, or centre half?

Probably middle of the park I'd say especially with a not match fit Jordan Henderson.

Shame Gallagher was stuck at West brom chasing shadows all season really as if he'd been at a half decent team he might have put himself in contention. Also big shame Loftus-cheek has stagnated so badly.
  • I'd go with:
    Pickford, Henderson, Johnstone
    Trent, Walker, Trippier
    Chilwell, Shaw
    Stones, Maguire, Mings, Godfrey
    Rice, Henderson, Phillips, Bellingham
Foden, Mount, Grealish, Sterling, Sancho, Rashford
    Kane, DCL

Can't choose between Saka, Greenwood or Lingard for the final spot, edging towards Saka.

    Southgate
Yeah I was wondering if he’d join Palace after the Euros, if he cocks it up with England.
  • If Phillips isn't fit (and especially with Henderson injured), who is the back-up to Rice?

Could he play TAA there after the comments he made earlier?

Ramsdale, Watkins, Saka, James, JWP, Lingard and White miss out I reckon if all fit.

I like Saka though given his versatility, and I'd actually be tempted to take JWP - given the 25th, 26th man etc isn't that likely to really be much more than a back-up, why not take JWP as a "chuck him on for 20mins when you need a goal and hope we get a free kick near the box" player.
  • i’d take Greenwood, I think he could be our best option off the bench if we find ourselves chasing a game. After Kane, I’d say he’s the next best natural finisher.

If everyone is fit, I’d leave the following out...

    Ramsdale
    Trippier
    Godfrey
    Coady
    Saka
    Ward-Prowse
    Watkins

Trippier should definitely go. He's just won La Liga and will be one of the only experienced heads there. Compared to Trent for example:

Looks good but the squad depth of France and Portugal is just as strong, if not better than us.

Most people are saying we have a great chance and we should reach at least the semi finals (which on paper we should). But then if we win our group we're likely to face one of France or Portugal in the next round.
  • That France squad has no real weakness (maybe Sissoko), they're world champions for a reason........and they've added Benzema.
  • Goalkeeper
    Sissoko
    Full backs

We beat them in the Final!

Only three players in the Champions League final possibly (and only one starter)

How many England squad players in the same game.....

The midfield position is the worry, as you say the injury to Phillips if a bad one puts a lot of pressure on Henderson to be ready straight away. I'm no fan of Dier but a little surprised he wasn't in this provisional squad.
  • Right but you're basically looking for a Kane replacement in the team. We are playing for Kane's skillsets.

Calvert-Lewin is a lot closer to Kane than Bamford.

Bamford benefits from a great system around him focusing on a high press and very fast transitions. Outside of that he's a tidy footballer but not someone that stands out leading a line.
That's actually not true. Kane is a ridiculously complete striker, and the other two both carry facets of what makes Kane good. DCL is quick and strong, wins most high balls that come his way, stretches the line and stays up high. He works hard and closes down defenders all game. He's great scoring with his head but if you put him in a one on one situations most of the time he'll miss. He's not a good finisher at all. Bamford doesn't quite have DCL's pace or his physical dominance but he's a really intelligent player, he comes deep like Kane and brings advancing players in around him. Given our ridiculous amount of talent available behind the strikers Bamford bringing the likes of Rashford, Sterling, Foden, Sancho, Mount and Grealish more into the game is an interesting prospect. He's also shown this season that he's much, much more than just a player made to look good by a system, his finishing has been excellent and he's got 8 assists this season to DCL's 2. Bamford has been talked down his whole career, and when he started well people thought he would drop off but he's maintained his form all season and he's in a good place. Personally I'd take all three if possible, meaning you've got Kane as the first choice, Bamford if Kane gets injured or needs resting, or you want to press an opposition defence hard (Bamford's pressing stats are ridiculous) and DCL as a different sort of attacker if you need to lump the ball forward.

  • The the Right backs - I would be surprised if he took all 4. Tripper can cover left back as well, and Walker on the right side of 3 cb’s.
  • Crickey , its like opening a bottle of champers, and finding out its got no fizz, we've got no chance!!
  • If we could swap France or Portugal's midfield , we'd walk the tournament , we've not got a all round good enough squad , hopefully other countries will have deficiencies / pick up injuries.
  • It's not always the best squad on paper that wins though, Greece in 2004 & Portugal in 2016 prove that.

  • I make those two favourites though!!  Maybe Belgium up there too.
  • As much as that Portugal squad is good, I’d still only take Fernandes, Ronaldo and Dias.

Maybe Silva if he was down as a CM.
  • I've said before but when you look at the age of some of the players too, France and Portugal could realistically win the next 4 or 5 tournaments between them.

Our central defence and keeper will cost us somewhere

Most definitely. Against the better sides we are going to need at least 2 goals. Stones, Maguire and Pickford all have a mistake in them.
  • Good to see confidence is flowing.

Cant wait for this, our final will be that last 16 game. Win that and we're on our way.
  • Obviously no question that he'll be in the squad, and quite likely Southgate will start him as he's a favourite, but how bad was Rashford last night? So off form.
  • Front 3 should be Foden-Kane-Sancho. Rashford way off the starting XI imo

Rashford is lucky to make the 26 man squad. Personally I have him behind Foden, Sancho, Sterling, Grealish and Greenwood in that left wing position.
  • It'll be Foden-Kane-Sterling/Sancho, can't see Rashford starting.
