The problem is, they do it by numbers. They could easily just appoint an U-21 manager just for this tournament from somebody just out of a job. Somebody like Wilder or Howe for instance. Impart some different ideas from good managers. The players are developed by their clubs after all, not the U-21 manager.
The FA do their best to appoint yes men with clean pasts and no skeletons in the cupboard. Football knowledge and tactical awareness is a consideration but public image matters greatly.
That was just like watching us in many of our recent performances......quite uncanny in fact. Dominating possession, absolutely woeful crossing, unconvincing corners and not creating many/any clear cut chances. Add to that the lack of midfield creativity and the inevitable somewhat streaky opposition winner against the run of play, you just might as well have been watching us at our worst over the last few months. Meh!
Yes it was very similar. Switzerland set up like a lot of teams do against us. They got bodies behind the ball and worked their socks off. They were not afraid to shoot and relied on a bit of luck or a mistake. Their goal was a miskick, but they had a few shots. You can only win the raffle if you buy a ticket.
Driving low crosses in when they had four or five players in the box and us one was never going to achieve anything. Our only real chance was set pieces the way we were playing.

AB’s tournament record with England U21’s is absolutely horrific. When you then add in the fact of the talent he’s had at his disposal, it’s even worse. An over the hill club manager, in charge of our kids, yet sits comfortably knowing the FA have no bollocks to get rid of him. He started 5 at the back today against a Swiss side happy to defend on the edge of their own box. Utterly clueless.
As you can probably tell, I can’t fucking stand him. These players probably receiving some of the best, modern and insightful coaching at their clubs, meet up for the U21’s and in walks T-Rex Aidy with his 1998 coaching manual.
Arsehole.
This is spot on. The players must almost resent turning up. We've got players getting coached by the likes of Klopp, Ancelotti, Tuchel, Farke and Arteta and then they turn up and have to listen to Boothroyd for 2 weeks.
Jones should've started, Madueke plays a lot for PSV so he probably should've started, and it was a bizarre decision to sub off Davies.
The only defence i can make for Boothroyd is that because we promote young kids to our seniors very quickly, he has to do without at least 7 players who are still eligible for this. I don't think any other country is as affected by that as we are. We could still play James, Foden, Rice, Mount, Sancho, Bellingham and Saka. Add the likes of Mason Greenwood and James Justin (who are both injured) to that lot and we would surely win this tournament easily.

Need to win by two clear goals and Portugal need to beat Switzerland for us to advance.
Portugal also beating Switzerland so we just need one more goal to somehow advance!!
Much better from us so far, well on top
Will get interesting if we get a second as it'll be Croatia that we'll replace in second spot
England really should have more than one so far themselves
They deserve to have scored at least one more this half.
