Sandy has a talent for self promotion and making money. I don't think he is going to chuck his hard earned cash at CAFC willy nilly, he won't break open the treasure chest until the team starts getting good results and is showing and producing real promise. So far the money spent on new players and re-signing the necessary ones has been careful and shrewd. In L1 funding a team is expensive and loss making, even one with good promotion prospects, he is a millionaire businessman, he's not a mega selling music star and doesn't (as far as I know) own a few oil wells, a movie business or rule a rich nation. His opening ploy about winning the Euro League etc etc I took with a bucket of salt. Anyone who expects multi million pound signings to come and sit on the bench while a few more international millionaires grace the first team is delusionary. I expect gradual progress, nothing more than that. I have been an Addick for a LONG time and have seen many ownership and managerial regimes come and go. Sandy will stick around for so long as he is enjoying himself and for as long as he is prepared to bankroll a loss maker. I expect no more and no less. As ever, we will see
But what if it TAKES breaking open the treasure chest before the team starts getting good results ?
Surely, intelligent , well thought out investment , NOT the amount. has to be made before this wafer thin squad is anywhere near that position.
Looking at our probable starting 11 for Oxford , with just TWO senior players on the bench hardly fills the faithful with overwhelming optimism....Is it any wonder that some have decided to give this one a miss in the hope of the cavalry arriving soon ?
And as most on here who were at the match last night have already testified, young Deji is the only "untried young player" looking likely to be able to fill in if required.
Opposition managers , especially Robbo , will know straightaway that we are paper thin on the ground and that our subs are, sadly, sub standard on the whole.
And are bound to tailor their game & their fresh legs accordingly.
Think TS is playing a dangerous game if it is his decision to severely limit his playing squad investment.
As far as TS is concerned, last season’s squad at whatever that cost to put together missed out on the play offs on goal difference. I suspect he believes we can at least achieve top 6 with the usual shrewd loans and purchases without breaking the bank. The window is still open - as others have said, let’s see how things look when the window shuts.
I would not be at all surprised if we see a couple of loans come in and as stated above we rely heavily on last seasons squad and youngsters. I may be wrong But Nigel seems to be going out of his way to praise the youngsters, especially after last night and I feel this is to soften the fan base up for when they are playing an active role as opposed to major signings.
The downside of that is his new manager bounce has expired, there is no guarantee that we will start this season as we finished last year, plus we have sold our 15 goal striker.
The problem is we can't rely on the youngsters, even Morgan who I admit to not seeing a lot of but doesn't seem the dominant midfielder who will drive us on to promotion. I don't have a problem with that, obviously he is doing his best & giving 100%. The problem is Sandgaard appears to believe that every youngster from our famed academy (plus a few others like Davison etc) are world beaters. What Adkins is saying I don't know but this can't be what he signed up for no matter how much he talks about a pathway for the youngsters. This season has disaster written all over it.
Surprised to see someone is finally talking about this
Previously no one has raised this issue on CL or twitter.
I was waiting to see how long it took you to pipe up - with your permanent stench and stain on the CL wall Mr. Hierarchy Henry!
❤️❤️❤️
I forgive you, many more like you who are very brave behind a screen. Knock yourself out haha!
💏
Let me try to get this little point to you, Henry, I am not like you a permanent fixture to CL also I certainly do not use Twitter. So what has already so far been already said I have no knowledge about or really give a crap. I piped up on here for one reason which is to try to take my mind away from my dying mother. Obviously, you do not know this. which is understandable, but what you imply with your quotes or trying to achieve for self popularity to be vindictive and push mental abuse to whoever you take to dislike which has led to a fair few x-CL followers away from this site because of such behavior whereby your name has been mentioned on many occasion. I'm certainly not looking for any sympathy, but when you comment you have no clue what that person may be going through. Charlton is a family club, and maybe the CL committee and its community should encourage this site to do the same and cut out this self-indulgent abuse to others for personal vendetta. Sure there will be disagreements and points put forward that some may or may not agree with, but you and personal point-scoring need to stop. So please try to give some people a break. Unless you know them personally and have good reason to dislike them? Be a good man and stop trying to be a -BLANK SPACE- towards those you think you dislike?
only just noticed this thread and had a look - u have my support - irving is a cunt and gives this site an image that it doesn't deserve
Far be it from me to stick my nose in but that’s a tad strong and the kind of comment that has had so many lately expressing concern at how toxic this forum has become recently.
I suspect we don't know the whole story but we do have had some snippets of information that may or may not go some way to explain things. Firstly, I have no doubt that Sandgaard is a good man with genuine ambitions for the club. I think that needs saying. So what are the snippets which may lead us to where we are now (I say may)?
I would list the following: The statements of that will be us and blowing the league away - I read into that an intention to have a go for it next (this) season. And a genuine belief we would. The fact Duchatelet still owns the Valley - I read into that that there is not a bottomless cheque book. The talk of partners by Sandgaard - I read into that an understanding that he needs help with other investment to make the club successful. The rumour that we lost a major investor - I read into that that our plan had to change. The apparent financial tightness being displayed over a number of areas - I read into that that we don't have a lot of money. Sandgaard is rich, but does he have the disposable income without a partner/partners? Which if a reasonable question, he won't have given up on.
These things listed may or may not be relevant but they might explain where we are now. If they are near the truth, I think it wouldn't hurt or have hurt the club to be honest about it. Fans would be totally understanding I'm sure and the club did need saving. But the expectation was ramped up and that is how you disappoint people. An added advantage in claiming relative poverty is demands don't go through the roof from fans and players.
Anyway, it could be wrong and it could be right. We could see developments that blow that theory out of the water in coming days or weeks. But the elements used to come to it are out there.
I know some won't agree with me, but I would personally add the reluctance to sack Bowyer despite having a replacement lined up. I have suspected there was a financial motivation behind that and holding off until he walked, which was always a real possibility, made getting into the play offs increasingly difficult by the day. I don't blame Bowyer by the way. The impossibility of the job over a sustained period clearly and understandably wore him down.
I thought the rumour we lost a major investor came from the deal Mumford talked about which we then heard nothing about? From what I remember @Airman Brown downplayed it, it sounded like it was something that would come in to play if/when we were in the Championship and it wasn’t as significant as Mumford made it out be.

Definitely think there's not the funds to blow away the league and can't expect someone to do all their wealth when no guarantee of a return. I wouldn't.
I think without additional investors, which may be difficult to obtain particularly in covid world, it is a case of very much lowering our expectations and getting out of this league will rely on shrewd low budget recruitment and masterful management of players at disposal rather than bringing in an abundance of quality as was implied/ assumed.
There was no one there willing to take us on at the asking price other than TS so we still have a club and should be grateful for that as it looked touch and go in that respect not so long ago.
But reality may well be that this is Charlton herein for a good few seasons unless we secure additional investment and therefore first step is acceptance of that if it proves to be the case.
I think there is significantly more chance of being in this league in 5 years than the premier league but that's the reality of it. Just hope we manage to play some half decent football as lumping it up to Stockley all season will get pretty dire pretty quickly.
We may make some signings between now and 31st that obliterate this view and maybe we will have a promotion chasing squad as a result if the funds are available to enable it but I'm generally lowering my expectations now as I think it is the reality of our situation and most clubs including many far bigger than us in this day and age.

We don’t know as there aren’t the level of leaks coming from the club that we had with previous regimes (which is a healthy signs).
Ah for the days when the clubs business played out over social media!

in the cold light of day, you are correct, that was too strong and i apologise - i can't delete your post with my less than charming word on so if you could delete it that would be good

"If something seems to be too good to be true, it probably is."
Cliché or adage ? You get my drift.
We were going to be heading for the stars this season under Thomas Sandgaard. Who said so ? Thomas did. Over 9k Charlton fans/critics/supporters signed up for the ride with Season tickets. First stop the Championship. BUT, (there's always a but) we are still on the ground waiting for take off as the crew don't look capable of reaching the stars. Don't panic, I hear you say. BUT, who will be the loans who will get us off the ground ? We just don't have the fire power and we desperately need boosters.
Early doors I agree, but the question is - Owner Sangaard certainly talks the talk - but who actually believes he can walk the walk with his statement of ambition for Charlton?
At this stage we have no idea if we will achieve his statement of ambition. Come the end if this season we will have a better idea

We have lost goals from Gilbey and JFC, hopefully on a temporary basis and from Aneke permanently. Replacing those sort of goals is generally expensive. Our season could rest on our ability to keep key players like Innis fit.
