8 out of the 16 players for Cafc had played for the first team. Erith & Belvedere are in the SCEFL which is a Kent centric League with only Fisher and Crowborough not based in Kent.
Disappointing result especially as certain CL members were already planning their journey for the trip to Glebe before the large lady had broken into song.
Making the breakthrough from talented youth to men's football see's many fail. Can you teach players to have a winning mentality ? After being 2-1 up against part time players from the Southern Counties east premier League I trusted there would be enough nous and ambition to see as through. The adage you learn more when you lose always sounds like an excuse to me. The Charlton 1st team must be erudite ! Learn when your winning was my favourite mantra to my team of young players.
Maybe the likes of Barker, Henry, Claydon, Vennings etc have a lot to learn still. Problem with football is it can be a brutal business for the majority of academy players. The cosseted environment can be taken away at 18 and then welcome to the real competitive world of contracts.
Claydon being 20 knows all about that as does Blackett-Taylor who has had a good start to his short 4 month contract after being released from Tranmere.

Was hoping that this would be the year when Henry and Vennings break into the first team, but get the impression they have not developed physically enough for the men's game. Imagine most will need to impress in the Checkatrade to really catch Adkins attention.

To give you an example to back up your views on Vennings and Henry and will they be strong enough for the physical men's game.
I watched a youth game last season and the coach who I knew said which one of these lads do you think had a trial at Norwich for a week last month. I went at first for the two skilful forwards who were so good on the ball and had two good feet, no came the reply.
Changed tact and went for the water carrier in midfield who was strong, but basic but he did link play even if most of his passes were just short accurate passes. No Hollywood passing at that time
That kid, *Courtney Clarke didn't get offered a contract by Norwich but did get a two year contract from Derby. With their problems he may be in the team this season if there is a fire sale.
*Still just 17, so he may add more to his game but he has strength and is box to box so will at least make it at League 1 level if injuries allow. Great engine and power. Millwall and Charlton were interested but decided to leave London and go to the Midlands.
The U23 team really mimic'd the first team yesterday. In fact it was like the Cheltenham game but prettier on the deck - all the balls were from right to left and our approach play so obvious. We seem to be forgetting about attempts on goal and peppering the goal.
May be under instruction with his two apps for 1st team in PJ and LC but Jacob Roddy never over lapped but moved ok but unfortunately at that level couldn't stop the crosses. He could pass ok over a short distance.
Roddy is a funny one. He doesn't seem a natural, but somebody who wants to be good at football so comes across very mechanical. A lot gets through him, but he holds his position ok and hugs the touchline. Not sure I've ever seen him move the ball more than 20 yards either via a pass or dribble.
Chin who played RB is naturally a midfielder and looked like has good potential. He is vocal and makes excellent runs too.
Sadly, 2 bad goalkeeping mistakes led to goals for E&B.
Got to 2-1 then played like we were 4 up. Barker spent the last 5 minutes deciding to go up front and just argue with the ref. I did expect more from some players.
Claydon has gone from a first team sub to a U23 sub!

Comments
Barker - Very enthusiastic but completely switched off for their first goal and got caught out at CB.
Dempsey - Decent but not sure where we go from here. Drops very very deep. Fine for this level but even Pirlo can't position himself between 2 CBs.
Henry - A real natural with the ball at feet and some excellent play but most of his play is from right to left.
Vennings/Claydon - Both subs and going for roy of the rovers stuff when on.
Roddy - Calls for the ball a lot.
