Jermaine Pennant also wore a single ankle pad......weird!
Didn't our very own Colin Walsh develop a shin pad that had in built ankle protectors?
I hated wearing the small ones you inserted underneath you sock, but I found a pair like the ones Pennant is wearing above. You pulled it on over your toes & had a strap that went under your foot. It was an all-in-one shin pad & ankle protector.
Wasn't it Jimmy Hendry the physio that designed the shinpad?
Also, if you had an "ankle protector" like Jermaine Pennant, I think we need to know more...
Used to dislike those pads that were more or less a big elasticated sock with the pad fixed in the front...it seemed like a short lived fad
Looking back on it there really used to be some horror tackles back in the day .Never got any breaks but have two nice gouges on shins from accidental knocks ..as it turned out both of these turned septic so if any of you younger types do get a cut on your leg while playing in the dirt/ mud ensure it gets cleaned up immediately rather than post game

You have to be extra naughty to get two of what Jermaine is wearing there
Oh, I see now...😉. It was late last night when I posted & it didnt click.
They stink, feel uncomfortable but I would always wear them. Ive also snapped a few of them and as I'm not some mau thai lunatic who kicks trees to harden the shinbone that snapped shinpad would have been my shin
Modern day players don't tend to be on the receiving end of some of the horror show tackles that used to be commonplace so Jack Grealish can get away with wearing kids shinpads to a degree.
Playing on a Sunday used to be survival of the fittest/most prepared to engage in some of the more organic tackles and I'd rather not do that without shin pads
Hated teams like that when we used to play - one in particular we seemed to always get drawn against was 90% 40year old skinhead types from the local estate, and they basically spent 2 hours every Sunday kicking people ten year's younger than them and calling them a C**t.
Remember asking one what led him to give up about a quarter of his weekend, early and hungover in the freezing cold on a Sunday, to kick people rather than actually play football, and whether he really enjoyed it.
"Er... well... (thinks about it for a while, which looks like quite an effort)... F**K OFF YA C**T."

We had for a few years the perfect blend to deal with teams like that, some genuinely talented young players, a couple of enthusiastic but fading players like me and a few psychopaths ready to commit some of the worst sober acts of brutality to defend the younger players. I never set out to hurt anyone but I played with some very vengeful and vindictive players who would seek revenge for a moody tackle 3 seasons prior. With teams full of gobshites you ignore it, those who talk rarely carry out their bullshit threats, with the more violent sides you meet it head on and like all bullies they will bottle a genuine challenge
Back in the day when studs were leather with metal pins in them shin pads were essential to prevent deep wounds. Then they went nylon which developed sharp edges if boots were worn when walking on paths etc.
I think shin pads should be optional as an adult to be honest, you're not hurting anyone else by not wearing them. I'd personally wear them
Would you say the same about seatbelts or lifejackets?
Ahh yes completely the same scenario....
It's not a million miles away, is it? The rules are there to protect people, which in turn does everyone a favour. If personal choice was the only thing that mattered then why would there be any rules for anything?
I always wore a pair of proper shin pads and then a separate and much thicker pair of home made anklets my dad had made me. Could barely get a sock over them but I always felt much more comfortable playing with proper protection than not.
Thinking back, don’t ever remember getting a shin or ankle impact injury.

So I’m told.
