cabbles said:I’ve got to say, their manager’s frustration at the lack of our support is completely misdirected. The obscene nature of the money at the top end of the game and the people that run these clubs are to blame for the demise of the FA Cup. It is still a great competition, but I would argue that it’s been on the wane for a number of years, and the attendances across the board today reflect that. There’s a lot of football now. I remember when League Cup ties in the early rounds were played over 2 legs, and I would lap it up. Nowadays I don’t even think about it as a competition. It would be great for all these non league clubs to get to bigger crowds, but we’re a lower half league 2 side that didn’t even get a great attendance on Tues night in the league. The magic of the FA Cup is something the TV channels do their best to create, but sometimes it’s a bit desperate. I think it was last season they had features on some non league team singing Adele or some nonsense. I posted on here a few pages back I would love a cup run and that’s true, but I don’t buy into the magic of it anymore. I think it’s abating as the years pass.7

What today did show was that restricting streaming doesn't make much difference to the gate12

Who were those young kids, over by D or E block (?) that were making a noise and chanting towards the end ? Sounded like it was a school outing. Nice to hear. Invite them back if it was their first time at the valley - goes without saying, keep them over there though7

I must admit when I look at our league games and it says the crowd is 12,000 it certainly doesn't look like it.....I think the RD years have taken its toll regarding our support2
-
Kids for a quid and loads of youngsters in today. There's a whole generation of fans who think Charlton only ever win four-nil.

He’s a non-league manager wanting to draw attention to himself. Ignore the bell end and wish him well against Tonbridge Angels in front of 400 next week.9

“Clubs like us rely on finances”?? Am I missing something? It was a home game. Did he think his club were due a percentage of our gate receipts??
Yes, 50% is there take from the cup tie.0 -
Fair enough, had no idea. Is that normal??2

Was surprised that, even with a few Pompey ringers, they couldn't even muster 1k for a day out in London.
Piss poor attendance from us though. I remember when we had Dagenham & Redbridge/Brentford in the cup in the prem days, and the whole ground was open and fairly full. At what point did we first only open 2 tiers for a competitive (non Johnston's paint) match?
The lack of crowd is what makes it feel like a friendly, not the line up0 -
I have to say that I do have some sympathy for H&W regarding the attendance.
Would we not feel a bit cheated if we got Man U or Spurs away in the third round, only to find that only a third of their normal home fans turned up?
Personally, I'm as baffled as the H&W manager.6 -

Why are you baffled?
Years of FA Cup failure and managers and players not taking it seriously - supporters have had enough.13 -

If we got spurs away in the 3rd round, I’d be amazed if more that what they got against Vitesse turned up.1 -
H&W posed no problems, defended well & kept it tight for 70 mins.
Lee & Watson came on for Morgan & Arter.
Lee changed the game immediately & we ran out easy winners.
Burstow looks like a natural goalscorer and is going to be some player.1 -

I'm baffled moreover at the general disaffection for the FA Cup. Personally I love it. I was singing Charlton songs at the TV during the Banbury v Barrow match (admittedly I'd had a few beers).4 -

Love listening to Jacko. He talks so much sense & speaks so passionately about Charlton. Only man for the job in my opinion18

On the penalty he said:
“You can’t have double jeopardy, the fact he’s had a free shot at goal and it’s gone wide – you shouldn’t then bring it back for a penalty.“
That's not what happened at all. The ball ran free from the blatant foul and our immediate shot was blocked. There was no advantage.
In the pre match interview that I saw he never mentioned the anticipated bumper attendance other than he said there would be over 1,000 Havant fans in the away end, which there wasn't.
Perhaps you need to look closer to home Doswell3
