I see these loan signings as trials to compete for a full time move in time for next season which is surely way more sensible than temporary signings which move on in May and thus leave another gap that needs filling in the summer transfer window.

They may or may not work out, but I think that this is a sensible approach for a January window given that we clearly need yet another rebuild in the summer if we are to become a serious competitor for promotion next season.

Hopefully a few more incoming and some of the deadwood moved on will hope us get closer to this goal.
Quite understandable from our point of view, but from the players...?

Will Castillo want to move from Chelsea to us ? Yes, he might be out of contract in the summer but will he really be wanting to play in League 1 - I'm sure he has loftier aspirations. And that is the problem with taking players on loan from The Premiership, especially from "top 6" teams. They have been used to big salaries & expectations to be playing in big stadiums. I've not yet seen us sign a player on loan from Chelsea (Maartsen, Da Silva), Arsenal (Mavididi, Bielik) Liverpool (Millar) or West Ham (Cullen) that we then sign permanently.

All is does is make the summer "rebuild" even harder as we are continually churning players.
Big stadiums? Biggest he has played at is Birmingham, similar to The Valley, where he played 3 times. Before that Den Haag (15K) and Jong AZ (1K !).

Loftier ambitions - not done anything at mediocre Birmingham and the odd loan to tiny European teams so unlikely.

Whatever his salary now is irrelevant once his contract ends and assuming Chelsea are not giving him another. I very much doubt he has made enough to retire, even coming through Chelsea.

Plenty of players from big 6 teams sign for L1 clubs every season.

Loan gives us a chance to take a look and for him to take a look, he may even have a perm contract agreed subject to min number of games or something.

There is literally nothing about this loan move to moan about.
.Not moaning......just would prefer to play our youngsters than Chelsea's if he is not going to be here come August.
If Jackson felt we had a good enough youngster to play there then i'm sure he would play him and use the loan spot for another position.
Exactly. The coaching staff and manager watch them train daily and would have discussions as to whether they are good enough or ready.

Question for golfie (couldn't be bothered to go back and look for his post)...you would rather play roddy over the chelsea kid?
Does Roddy have a contract beyond this season? Genuine question, I don’t know.

I don’t really see the point in giving Chelsea’s players experience in a bid to finish 11th as opposed to giving our own youngsters experience and finishing 14th. The latter will stand us in much better stead for next season as we’ll know who can cut it and we won’t be spending money that could better be spent in the summer.
Because of Roland, and almost continued 3rd tier football we haven't got the "youngsters" to play.  We have got a crop of 19-21 year olds to play.

We have got some very high potential U18s and first year pros but so few are ready at that age.  We have probably had 4 or 5 in the last 40 years that are.  Even Parker, who by most messures is the  best player to ever come through our youth set up, wasn't ready at 17/18.  It can do them more harm than good.

It's the group of Claydon, Wasim, Ness etc that should be knocking on the door now.  We know why they aren't.

So spend money developing a player for Chelsea who, as things stand, won’t be here next season instead?
Do we have a youth player that plays LWB?

I'm sure if we did and they thought he was good enough, he'd already be playing. Burstow is.

Think the most likely player in the 23s to play that role , Sam Oguntayo is only just back from a fairly long injury layoff.

Surprised if a right sided player - doesn’t fit with what I heard

Castillo or something like that LB from Chelsea.

Red Valiant wins the award for the first person to put a name to the rumour and Doucher wins the award for knowing who it was but keeping quiet 🏅🎖️
Thankyou soapbox although just to clarify i didn't know who the player was but i knew about  a week ago that we were aiming to sign a left sided player and an attacking midfielder on loan this week and on tuesday i was told the left sided player was signing on wednesday. not that any of this really matters but does suggest we are highly likely to be signing an attacking midfielder particularly as i also know we went back in for a midfielder on Monday and i know who that player is

Lets start the guessing games....has he started more than 5 league games in the past 5 years?

A good window would also be as mentioned above, shipping a lot of them out

    Watson
    Morgan
    Kirk
    Gunter
    Davison
    souare

I think if all of the above moved on that might light a fire up a few of the rest of them for next season
Hard to disagree with this list but I’d ship Davison out on loan for a whole season and see what comes of it, we all saw the mare he had the other week but the kid deserve half a chance at least, then if the loan is unsuccessful then get rid.
Yes, I have always wanted him to do well and recall thinking after he scored at home to Sheff Wed 2 seasons ago, hmm, we might have an okay player here once he gets more experience.  He may still turn out to be okay, but I think he’s going to find League 2 his level, and I can’t see him scoring the goals to get us promoted unfortunately.

It’s difficult with youngsters in general to know which way they will go, especially forwards.  Burstow may be okay, but some of the stuff I’ve seen on Twitter so soon after he made his debut about how mint he is, and how he’s going to be a top player??  How can people just causally throw that out there is beyond me.
Think it was against West Brom mate in a 2-2 draw.  Bonne got the goal against Sheffield Wed.
Yes, that’s right.  It was the 2-2 at home 👍🏻

no, but the player contacted on Monday isn't coming coz his club won't allow him to go out on loan which is a shame in my opinion

Yes. Let's get rid of Davison a young home grown talent yet to prove himself and sign Defoe.

A young home grown talent who buggered off, did well  and should have retired 5 years ago.
Because Defoe could be blind folded and would still be the better player.
    Is Davison home grown???

Davison had to be registered on the squad list if I remember correctly as he's now 22 - e.g. Jermaine Defoe would technically qualify as home grown as he came through an English Academy (regardless of whether its Charlton or West Ham)
  • I know for a fact that Defoe was speaking to another league 1 team this week - doesn't mean it will happen of course

This. Bowyer had Aribo, Grant, Doughty & Dijksteel during his management period. At some point all the penny pinching from Roland and ESI was going to catch up with us. You had hoped the likes of Dempsey and Vennings would be breaking into the first team, but they are not good enough. Unfortunately, we are in that transition period when we have a weak group of 19 to 22 year olds, but good 18s. I am certain if anyone from the 23s were good enough to be in the first team, they would be.

Only one who might play between now and May is Aaron Henry and hes only 18 i think.
Neither Aribo nor Dijksteel are academy products, there were signed aged 18/19

But then that's nothing new. Neither Paul Mortimer nor Paul Williams came through our youth system, we've always picked up good players either from non league or that have been released by other clubs

  • So many saying “why bother” we have no chance of the playoffs…we are only 13 points off with 90 to play for…I’d say playoffs are unlikely BUT not over yet.  Go on a run of wins and a few above have injuries/lose key players and it is still possible ….

  • So we all knew Burstow before he made a first team appearance, we have now seen him play and score but plenty say he is not yet ready. Then instead of signing a 21 year old loan player who we may or may not sign permenently some say we should try our own youngsters at wing back but apart from Roddy seem to struggle to name one. That says to me that they won't be ready either.

There is also a big difference between 10 minutes here and there and playing week in week out underpressure to get results. Maybe a different situation in 6 weeks time but now is not the time.

    Mason Burstow

Slightly younger, but picked up from Maidstone

Do all football fans do this, or is just Charlton fans.
  • Oguntayo is a young leftwing  back bit has only just returned from injury.

Hearing another loan deal fell through due to the medical.
    Blimey, we’ve started doing medicals.
I am busy googling 1 legged players.....

Mathematically I agree with you, but does this team look like it can go on a run, even with 2-3 top quality additions? They don't have the grit and fortitude, most of them are brain-dead.

I may be being dense, but how are there 90 points to play for? 60, surely?
  • Guessing that Browne is the one that fell through due to the medical...
