For those who thought Taylor might be coming back to us on loan, its just been announced on out local BBC station 'East Midlands Today' it looks certain he's going out on loan to Birmingham......I thought Bowyer and Taylor fell out!!! Well seems they may be friends again
My gut feeling was that over the summer analytics took precedence over traditional scouting and squad building.
There is a place for both but a computer algorithm isn't the same as knowing if a player will be happy in London or if he'll play well in a different formation with different players and, as it turned out, under a different manager.
It doesn't help, IMHO, if one of the analysts is in Australia and the neither of the then manager or Head of Recruitment have the final say.
Add the budget not being as big as those of Ipswich and Wigan and not realising that many of the league 1 and 2 players we were targeting would go to the championship because if we thought they were good so would others with deeper pockets and you can get a feel for what was, IMHO, going on over the summer.
But we still made some strong signings IMHO
Stockley, Famewo, Macca, Lavelle, Dobson, Clare, even Lee and Leko at times, were/are decent signings at this level.
Arter, Souare, Kirk, for different reasons, weren't.
So the squad had some quality as it showed when JJ took over but it also relies on Stockley far too much and their confidence is fragile. Innis and Lavelle have been big misses too.
Players like DJ can be brilliant or invisible but thats why he's in league 1.
Bottom line for me is that this squad has underperformed.
It should be top six. The run from Sunderland away proved that.
That it is not is partly poor management, partly injuries, partly the players not doing enough, partly that the squad wasn't balanced, partly some players not being good enough. What % you want to put on each is something to argue about until the cows come home or we sign another player.

This is your best post, and totally agreed with all the points!
How do you fix this problem? No one will ever question TS passion for the club and to succeed, but clearly something in the recruitment! Is Gallen as good as we think at picking a player, or did we just get lucky in the loan market previously? How many of them signings were identified by Gallen in the RD time?
How was able to get better players on a much smaller budget then? Or was it simple these players were identified by someone different then?
You have Clare and JFC to come back into that CM category next season but wing backs defo need improving.
Clare is a right back or right centre back .
No, he’s a central midfielder who has the athleticism and ability on the ball that Jackson wants from one of his outside centre backs to venture into midfield and join the attack. He has the ability to play there, and overall has done very, very well, because of playing at right back previously in his career. He understands the defensive side of the game better, but he is still a midfielder playing in defence.
I don’t think he has the passing quality or awareness to play there . Evidently I’m outnumbered on this feeling but he looks much better in defence to me . I think he wants to play in midfield, certainly.
More than entitled to that. I just don’t think he has been able to show his worth in midfield. To me, he’s as close to a Gilbey replacement that we have. He has the athleticism and the ability to carry the ball, not to the same standard, but he can do it. He’s just proved to be very useful as an outside centre back.
For me, I will be interested to see the style of play and principles of play that Jackson will try to implement in the summer. Especially as we will have a core of players and the season starting a little earlier, we need to do our business early and I would hope we would see what his style actually is. And with that, where Clare fits in and the position he plays.
I think the fact that he can't get in this midfield says a lot about his prospects of playing there next season, after hopefully a productive close season. Closest thing to Dobson, yes, and therein lies the issue- our midfield is woefully short on quality and mobility. I really like Dobson- I'm glad he's maintained his form in this slump and I think Gilbey is a good player, albeit with minimal end product. Beyond that, we've got an inconsistent Morgan (who I hope will be go on a run of good league games now), Lee, who has fallen away spectacularly and Watson.
Yes, our midfield is nowhere near good enough and for me, that’s been the biggest problem this season. Not enough goals, not enough protection for the defence, not enough creativity.
I personally think Gilbey is our best midfielder, with what he brings to us, if he had a bit more about him defensively, he wouldn’t be in this league.
I think him and maybe Dobson, if he improved his ability on the ball, are the only ones who could be a squad player for a Championship club, not starters but would play a part. I think that’s the problem.
I know we wouldn’t have a midfield like that again at this level, but compare our midfield now to what we had when we won promotion and it’s scary the massive difference in quality.
Think his ability on the ball has been excellent. He’s calm in possession and is excellent at turning out of trouble. His pass completion stats are decent too, I think. He’s easily my favourite player, and for me our best midfielder, albeit he’s a defensive one.
He’s been excellent post Adkins and a credit to himself a real warrior, but he’s not amazing on the ball, he’s fairly average in that respect, otherwise he’d be a more attacking midfielder, his strengths are tackling, breaking up play and protecting the back four. His passing stats might be great I don’t know but they’re more than likely backwards and sideways passes.

We signed good loan players when the little virgin from Belgium was involved and it's all gone down hill since.
he warned us about Nigel Adkins by posting 'oh no Charlton, what have you done'
maybe he is more football intelligent than we gave him credit?

I meant to mention in my post that he rarely plays a killer pass, but neither did Nobby Stiles :-)
But I still think he’s good on the ball. At least since his ‘comeback’ under JJ. Have hardly seen him caught in possession in all of those games. At this level, that’s decent.
Wouldn’t be at all surprised if we struggle to hold on to him in the summer.

I wasn’t aware they were so heavily reliant on data and analytics. The company I work for sells a technology to help with people analytics and workforce planning. It can be very powerful, but I often speak with prospects and one of the key things to point out is that the data needs to inform your decision, it won’t make the decision for you, like some sort of silver bullet.
I don’t know if from what you say they thought that they could be largely reliant on it as if it were making the decision for them. If so, then they will be exposed because there is always a human element that must be factored in. I recall numerous interviews with Curbs talking about making sure the players he bought in, got what we were about as a club. Of course, that doesn’t mean that he always got it right, and football has changed a lot since he was in charge, but it is important to try and uncover the soft factors.
Some good points in here HI and I know in myself I write a lot of my posts in anger and frustration at the moment, so don’t always take into account a lot of what you said.
However, I cannot agree this squad/team should be top 6. True, the run post Sunderland showed they can compete, but the run since Plymouth away and the performances at Burton and Shrewsbury show they look very much a mid to lower table squad as well. It’s completely fair for you to see it as underperforming, I completely respect that. I see it as just not enough quality and not enough fight and think we are very much a 13th place outfit. If we’re compromising, you could say top 6, I could say mid to lower table and we’re perhaps in the middle of that.
I believe Watson’s contract had a trigger stating if he played x amount of games an additional year was automatically added, I’m sure Bowyer mentioned it after a game. If that’s the case the club wouldn’t have a say in it short of paying him off.
Let's be honest, we only kept Watson because he triggered a contract extension and no-one was going to take him off us
Should have stopped playing him last season as soon as we were close to the number of appearances needed for the extension.
There was a moment last night where Hartlepool tried breaking from our corner - the ball flew in his direction and he was completely unready for it. He ended up shanking it behind him and falling over.
Not to mention he completely failed to close down the bloke who scored their equalizing goal. Post match, Jackson said the team had spoken about how he likes to cut in and shoot from his left foot. Watson had all that knowledge in his head but still got nowhere near him.
If he didn't believe his playing career is dead after last night, I think he might be delusional.

My favourite bit is when the lad scored, Watson looks to his left and throws his arms up to immediately blame someone else. No one was there…
Hi all. Really interesting reading your views on the squad but this thread is titled 'transfer rumours'. Are there any? And either way can we bitch and moan about the current squad on other, more appropriate, threads?

The trouble is, if the problem is multi faceted, then so will the solution be.
How do you fix this problem? No one will ever question TS passion for the club and to succeed, but clearly something in the recruitment! Is Gallen as good as we think at picking a player, or did we just get lucky in the loan market previously?
How many of them signings were identified by Gallen in the RD time?
he warned us about Nigel Adkins by posting 'oh no Charlton, what have you done'
maybe he is more football intelligent than we gave him credit?
nah.....I'm joking.
We let the wrong one go there.
Whatever you think of Pratley, he gave everything for the shirt and I am grateful to him for what he achieved in his time with us.
I will always remember him fondly - proper Charlton.
Thankfully we've got the strong spine of a team and Gallen won't have to sign 14 players in the summer.
Oh.
If we had done/not done loads of things half of the others wouldn't matter as much.
You can afford to make 1 or 2 "mistakes", especially when you dealing with about 20 ins and outs. We made about 10, each one exaggerated the next one.
Some good points in here HI and I know in myself I write a lot of my posts in anger and frustration at the moment, so don’t always take into account a lot of what you said.
Some very good points in this post though 👍🏻
If that’s the case the club wouldn’t have a say in it short of paying him off.
