I thought Dagenham 2011 was the nadir of being a Charlton fan, but this feels on a par. When will things actually get better for us and we have more than 1 fleeting season of success surrounded by years of shite
could be worse, you could have been born in Oldham……or Bury. Glass half full 😀
Decent first 30 minutes with no end product. Poor from then on. Goalkeeper is an old man. Clare and Dobson good enough. Leko embarrassing. Washington not clinical enough. Burstow knows where the goal is. Albie changed things up.
Need Lavelle and Innis fit Need the new father back in goal Need Stockley back Need three or four more players And that's just to finish comfortably mid table Crewe were a bunch of kids with an old man.up front. They should have had two penalties.
I harped on about this on the match thread, but I genuinly cannot believe how many of our own attacks we defend for the opposition. We
- Hardly test the goalkeeper with on target attempts - Dribble off the pitch to lose momentum - Lose the ball then foul opposition - Set piece accuracy is awful - Foul following a breakdown in our own wet piece - Hardly move for throw-ins - Usually see promising attacks return to CB or Goalie - Wrong weight of through balls
If this continues, we need to focus on a new set of attacking players as having Stockley back doesn't solve all the above.
Crewe hussled us and got to most first balls. They worked harder than us and played better as a team. Never let us settle and we could not get our game together. Leko ineffective and got caught in possession too much. We lost our way tonight. Need Stockley back asap. Need to get our mojo back for Saturday or it will be the same again.
You can trace this all back to the absolutely awful summer recruitment.
We ended last season on a relative high.
It seemed obvious doing business early was the way to go to build on that momentum and fly into this season. But we dithered, bought too many players in certain positions and not enough in others. That cannot happen this coming summer else we honestly risk sinking further down the pyramid. The next six months are massive in this club’s future. I really believe that.
The next 7 months will be very telling about the appetite/ ability to get us out of this league in the next few years. Come the end of August when the window shuts will speak volumes to intent and prospects.
Ideally business will be done as soon as the window opens in summer and hopefully not another summer of over analysis as to why we've not done any great business whilst over hyping the players that do come in.
We have a manager who knows the club inside out and who every fan is behind (bar the odd one that no doubt exists somewhere in the ether) and an owner who by now has had enough time to take stock where we are lacking and what we need.
This summer window is massive in terms of a rebuild and getting it done via a well executed strategy a'la Powell in that glory season.
Failing to do that will likely see us cemented down here for the foreseeable with no real plan to change it.
We will see.
What ? everyone knows that most business gets done on the last day of the window when prices are more realistic & that there's always good quality players out of contract that we can sign after the window slams shut.
Henderson was at fault for both goals plus of course poor decision making by defenders, the parrying of the ball reminded me of Mac's early performances....poor coaching? And why try playing out from the back and playing our defenders into dead ends.....reminiscent of Adkinsball there. they need to cut that out.
Famewo was the worst of a poor back three tonight, defensively and hoofball wise. Pearce had a mare, and Clare took the lead from Famewo to hoof the ball forward.
Dobson running a one man midfield, with Lee continuing on with the poor 5-6 game run he had before the slightly better performance against Norwich. I hope we dont even think about signing Lee if Im honest.
Leko....terrible as in giving the ball away and extremely poor decision making, as Ive said before, a luxury we cannot afford...one or two reasonable moments a game just doesnt cut it. Sincerely hope we dont sign him
DJ whilst defensively he has improved, going forwards now seems to be a problem....lumping balls into the box with no accuracy is just pointless. CBT still living off one good half against Gillingham, not good enough for League one let alone League 2.
Gilbey had a couple of surging runs but again, he loses posession far too easily.
Washington was probably our best player which isnt saying much....Burstow one for the future but shouldnt be played week in week out yet...
Plus marks for young Albie, he can certainly find a pass, imagine the outrage on here if he played like Lee has recently.
Id have tried Inniss as centreforward second half in place of Leko...couldnt be any worse could he?
The other thing that was completely out of order was the dickhead Crewe fan coming onto the pitch and shoving Morgan when he went over to remonstrate with the lino following the disallowed goal. Hopefully he gets nicked and banned.

Yeah I saw that. Surprised no one else picked up on it tbh
Miserable trip. A proper Adkins performance that. Not bothered by the goal at the end because we didn’t deserve anything anyway.
And the set pieces. EVERY SINGLE WEEK. How difficult is it to deliver a decent ball into the box. It’s pathetic.
I don’t know who the twat was in the first half who was swearing at every player but when he said Leko should run harder because ‘you lot should be able to fucking run’ it made me even more livid. Someone near me said ‘thats borderline that’. No, its racist. I’m guessing someone must have shut him up cos I didn’t hear him again.
Leko does not become active until the deflection, so imo can't be offside. He in no way prevented the keeper from saving that, the deflection did him completely and he would never have got anywhere near it.
<snip>
What got me was that the referee was standing in the penalty area no more than fifteen yards away, with a clear view, and immediately gave the goal; no hesitation whatsoever.
Even with his performance tonight he must have realised there couldn't have been two defensive players between Leko and the goal and so offside was a possibility, but he still gave the goal. Why? Did he think there was no case to answer for "interference"? Did he think that the deflection came off a defender and therefore Leko wasn't offside? He must have had a thought process and arrived at the decision of "goal".
The lino, with a different view, saw Leko in an offside position in the 'keeper's pocket and flagged ... eventually.
It was right for the ref to go over and speak to the lino but surely if he hadn't seen anything wrong with the passage of play - and he was closest to it - then surely he should have told the flag-waver "thanks for your input but I think the goal should stand because of this, this, this etc" and stick with his original decision.
In the event I suppose the only surprising aspect to the whole scenario was that he didn't then book a couple of Charlton players for arguing and send off Leko for impersonating a forward ...
Finally we can stop blaming the manager and start pointing the fingers where it belongs. To the players that simply aren't good enough.
They're bang average and our summer recruitment was worse than any in the Roland era. 12 days in and looks like January isn't going to be much better either.
Just got back, for those still on your way home I salute you!
Sorry jacko got it wrong today. Our shape is awful-no midfield-we’re almost playing 5-1-4 at times and Dobson or the defenders have no options. Morgan’s little cameo gave us more options and someone who can pass.
leko was awful-but again he’s not a striker and can’t hold up the ball. Never seen a goal keeper not being able to kick the ball past the halfway line. So we play short but shock horror no midfield so no one to play too and we’re lucky not to concede this way.
The goal was absolutely fine and would of made up for an awful performance but would I taken a point at the start? No.
Also those going on about investing in the squad…..I wonder what the difference in wages are between us and Crewe.
Time to bleed in some more youngsters with the season over and rebuild for next year.
I said after Sunday that we were only 6 points off 21st so our first target had to be avoiding relegation. We lost a 6 pointer tonight and if we continue with our inability to score will get sucked in before too much longer.
Sorry to be so despondent but that is what I feel after that performance tonight.
And can I be the first to say that perhaps Jackson was indeed part of the problem back when Adkins was manager. All that has happened is that the deck chairs have been moved around on the deck.
Was anyone else impressed with Morgan little cameo tonight?
Maybe I’m just trying to see positives but I think he would be better deeper.. not in the 10 role. & Yes I’ve worked that all out in the space of 12/13 mins that played 😉
What depresses me about this season is that we have played so many teams who have genuinely looked awful and yet still managed to beat us. This is no disrespect to Crewe at all but they are a very ordinary team and yet still beat us comfortably. I am increasingly coming round to the conclusion that we are just a very ordinary team as well which wouldn't be so bad if our squad wasn't earning probably 10x what the likes of Crewe's etc do.
I actually don't think our issues are down to a lack of effort, when things are gloomy it can often be cathartic to slate the players and say they don't try which I don't think is the case and I sincerely doubt JJ would tolerate anyone not playing for the shirt.
However our decision making is absolutely atrocious at times, you hear the word football intelligence banded about a lot and we seem to have barely any of it. So many times we seem to make stupid decisions or errors, we mess about and miss a sitter and then 2 minutes make a defensive mistake and concede a goal. It happens game after game, we have decent passages of play but nobody has the nouse to stick the ball in the net and then we concede a goal and end up chasing the game.
There are a lot of players in this league who perhaps lack a bit of quality but have the experience of what is needed to scrape a result in this league and we don't seem to have any characters like that either, the offside goal pretty much encapsulated our lack of intelligence and poor decision making. I like Leko and on another night the goal would have stood so don't want to make a huge deal of it but I felt that moment just summed up our entire season.
I trust Jacko to get us out this League eventually and I'm sure better times are ahead but what a miserable time it is at the moment.

Yes I was but we need to remember that it was at the end of a game vs a team at the bottom of league 1 who were holding on for a win. Having said that this weekend id start him alongside Dobson and play Washington on his own up top.

When I said this just before the season started I got pelters. When I said even Duchatelet supported his managers with some decent signings one poster said that they wanted to rip my head off & piss down my neck.
The chickens have come home to roost & I am very sad that I was right.
What a load of old shit. I had to watch the highlights of the Leeds play off final just to cheer myself up after that.
Most entertaining thing about that game was Peter Shirtliff's accent; I knew he was a northerner, but bye eck I didn't know he was the bastard child of Wilf Lunn and Brian Glover.

Out of sorts.
Guess which one applies to our lads tonight.
A poor attempt at a soupcon of humour after a thoroughly depressing performance tonight.
Sitting in the Stand on Sunday clearly didn't do Famewo any good.
A decent performance from Hendo in the Cup was wiped from the memory whilst watching at least 2 decisive errors tonight.
And why are we resorting to hoofball when JS isn't on the pitch ?
But I don't understand the criticism of Wash or Gilbey TBH. Perhaps it's too easy to take out our frustrations on all & sundry.
Until Thomas gives his cheque book a good shake to dislodge those moths currently in residence, THIS is all we have.
Worrying times indeed & it's unlikely we'd have a close to full Valley if freebies were offered again any time soon.
Maybe it's time for an older experienced head to come in as support for Jacko.
But that will have to wait until he returns from the Windies.
Ah, well, at least the trip to Cheltenham will be boosted by a weekend in Bath.
