while not the news you wanted it shows that your medical team have your best interests at heart (sorry) - so it will take a little longer than you hoped but better to take longer than not return to the Valley - keep fighting Malc.
Malc, 6 months is what I was told so normal, as is stay in ITU after the operation. Stay strong - I came through it. They have to paint the worst picture to cover themselves. Come on you Addicks.
Clearly not the news you'd hoped for but I'm sure the experts know what's required to get you to " RM, Mk 2 " & fit for your triumphant return to The Valley.
Thank you for your kind comments. I'm very conscious that others have not and may not be as lucky as me to have the option, that I am hugely aware of!!. However, maybe because of my inherent competitive nature, I have to have a goal to aim for, I did with my heart failure, and I have with this bloody disease as well. Im very very scared of the surgery, but when they told me 3 months to recover, I set my 'goal' on getting down to The Valley for the 1st game of the season, and I geared everything to that. When I was told on Friday sorry it's 6 months and there are a few more risks, it 'blew a hole in my goals' and left me feeling very down. My MH is poor at the moment, because of 'the bag', and the new news hasn't helped. I know with your support I've got a great chance of making it, I just, over the next few days need to readjust my goals, and I will! On a positive note, my thanks to this WONDERFUL club of ours and especially Tracey Leaburn and a well known poster on here!! Thursday evening I received 2 video messages of support, 1 from Dobbo and 1 jointly from Miles and Harry Isted! They thanked me for my many years of support, wished me well in my battle and said they looked forward to seeing me back down The Valley soon. What a lovely gesture and a huge pick me up!! What a club and what a set of caring supporters we have. Thank you Malc x Live, Love, Laugh and Be Happy #fxxkcancer #DarkerTheShadowBrighterTheLight
Hang on in there mate. From experience Their predictions are often the worst case scenario and i suspect you will be back at the valley sooner than you think good luck
My mum had cancer which spread to her bones and one tumor was wrapped around spinal cord. Not many surgeons were willing to operate to remove it but she wanted it gone and one brave doctor did and she lived for another 10 years. I honestly think if she didn't do it she would have passed earlier and it wasn't that issue that caused her to pass. Hang in there mate. You are brave and have a good outlook on life which will go a long way. All the best.
I thought today would be a good time to update on my situation. I visited my surgeon again on Friday, I've accepted that I'll have a colostomy bag for the rest of my life, and my mental health has improved, dramatically! However, things have changed slightly, and I do wish to emphasise slightly, I may now not have to have a 'bag' afterall. The radiotherapy may have worked better than they thought, so I will have my current illiostomy reversed, the hernia repaired, and the tumour removed, but, if my heart can take it, they will continue to repair the large bowel internally, and not give me a colostomy! I need to continue to get myself as fit as possible which I'm doing, by following my 'fit for surgery' trainer sessions, and then, if possible I may be back to normal! I've decided to just accept I'll have a bag, and if when I wake up there is no bag, then it's a brucie bonus! Operation will be end of June or early July and last 8 hours, then 3 days in ITU followed by at least 10 days on the ward. Then it's upto 6 months recuperation. My aim is now to get to The Valley in January! Live, Love, Laugh and Be Happy xx Enjoy summer everyone!! Cheers Malc x
Good news Malc. You have to learn to live with whatever life throws your way. It’s not easy and I accept it 90% of the time and just tell others to give me space the other 10%!
Ahh now Malc! That's blummin brilliant. Let's aim to have a right good lifers meet up in January. That's deffo worth a trip over Love to you as always my friend. ❤️
Keep chugging on RM. Knowing that there's a chance you won't have to have a colostomy is a massive incentive to get yourself as fit as possible for the surgery, but being realistic about your chances is sensible. I'm sure we'll all be keeping our fingers crossed for the Brucie Bonus for you.
I thought I would update on my cancer situation. For those who remember I had bile duct cancer, and the cancer was removed by Whipple surgery (similar to @Bedsaddick ) in May 2022 . This was followed by a 6 month course of chemo which I had in tablet form. Scans showed the operation a success and the cancer removed. However scans earlier this year have shown what they call a single peritoneal deposit which has increased in size. This is a nodular legion anterior to the transverse colon, although at an early stage. Unfortunately It cannot be treated by either surgery or radiotherapy. Therefore it cannot be solved. The only option is to try and control it from growing. I have therefore just started another 6 month period of chemo (in drip form this time) which it is hoped will extend my life. I have the benefit of being a fairly fit person for a man of 71, but it is frustrating as I was just starting to feel fully fit active again, playing football and tennis.
Malc & redman I wish you both as much wellness as is possible. Here it seems that the Lass's lymphoma might have returned as she has various swellings and we are waiting for the test regime to kick in, in some ways I think the waiting for answers is worse than the answers themselves - does this bothersome disease ever give up?
Sorry I was way behind on this thread. Sending @redman the best. My god mother has been in a similar situation for years, and I just hope that you're able to manage it.
@Redmidland I think your approach is great. Not just giving yourself something to aim for, but also something to beat, is excellent. You show that cancer!
...that being said, is going to The Valley the best thing for a heart condition?!?!?!?!!? Said with a tremendous amount of love. You've got this.
Glad malcs news is more positive and really hope the operation is a success. In my case rhe chemo i have been on for the last year has now stopped working and am just starting what they call 3rd line defence ( drug called Lonsurf) to try and hold things. Only been on it for 5 days and am already having mixed side effects. Hopefully they will settle down in time. Does anyone have any knowledge about this treatment. Thanks
