Saw on the England Pod that Cape Verde only committed 1 foul in the game vs Spain. Remarkable defensive display

Winner of Argentina’s group players runner up of Spain’s group in the first knockout round. After Spain’s draw yesterday…
I'm confident Spain will still win the group after Uruguay didn't beat Saudi.

The last time they failed to score in their opening game (2010) they went on to win it.

Was that the 1-0 loss to the Swiss?

Livramento apparently injured and we may stoll be able to replace him.

Chalobah rumoured - mad to me it's not Lewis Hall.

Livramento is out of the world cup with a calf injury.

In his place Tuchel has called up Lewis Hall, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Myles Lewis-Skelly, any competent full back, Trevoh Chalobah. Who is not even a full back.

    Make it make sense.

Tuchel loves a CB at FB and I’m not sure Livramento would have got many minutes anyway. I suspect Konsa becomes a RB option and Chalobah is drafted in as a CB option who might be able to do a job at RB in an emergency. I wouldn’t have picked Chalobah but it’s an incredibly predictable Tuchel style pick

Leaves the fullback options as below

    Left Back:

    O'Reilly
    Spence
    Burn

    Right Back:

    James
    Spence
    Konsa
    Quansah
    Chalobah

Part of me thinks he might even fancy Konsa in that RB role. Konsa has played there a few times I believe.

Wouldn’t feel very confident with anyone other than Reece James there though.

Rob Dorsett from Sky has tweeted that Chalobah was holidaying in the US. If that’s helped his selection that’s pretty wild, even if minutes are likely to be limited

I can see the reasoning but personally i'd prefer Tuchel to pick a player who is good in one position over one who is pretty average in two positions.

Like you say though, i doubt he'll get many minutes anyway (thankfully).

Conversely, Spain have only won 3 world cup games since winning the final in 2010.

    2014 - Australia
    2018 - Iran
    2022 - Costa Rica

There's a fantastic example of the right-wing, BBC damned-if-you-do syndrome. Send a broadcasting team to the USA? "Why are they wasting licence payers money when they could do the same thing from a studio in Salford?". Set up a studio in Salford? "The Daily Telegraph described the BBC’s approach as the “work-from-home World Cup”, while television network GB News claimed the corporation was “set to lose out” to rivals in signing up tournament pundits.".

    Brazil look very average....
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I always want Brazil to fail in the World Cup. Nothing against Brazilians, but I just find it nauseating the way everyone jizzes in their pants over them, even when they’re not all that.
And qualifying from South America is fucking ridiculous. Brazil (and Argentina) basically have a free pass every tournament.
That 7-1 shoeing they got from Germany in their own backyard in 2014 was a thing of beauty. That Sideshow Bob looking Chelsea berk in tears was hilarious.
Brazil tried their best to feck it up this time.
    And yet, still qualified!
When you look at how many times in the past that established footballing nations like England, Italy, France, Spain and the Netherlands have failed to reach the finals, it’s criminal how easy it has been for the only two major teams in South America.
We can't blame South America for Europe's failure to make a sensible qualification system.

They make one big league so it’s more likely the big countries qualify.

We make little groups which sometimes place, for example,  England with a strong Poland side in 1974, or Italy with a strong Norway in 2026. Then to compound it we give entry to a team with only 2 points in qualification because they won a third division mini league!

No. The difference is that Europe has 54 teams competing for 16 places. South America has 10 teams competing for 6 places with 7th going through to a play off.
Exactly. SA should have three places.

    Nice headline in The Guardian:
’Pico’ Lopes and Cape Verde give Spain’s boys one hell of a neutralising

Fancy Senegal to do pretty well this tournament but still think they'll lose this one.

Are they seriously doing this for every game?. Every player is on the pitch around a giant FIFA flag singing towards it whilst another hundred security personnel keeping an eye on each nations flag, just in case someone tries to pinch them..

Ok so stuff like that should be reviewable by VAR IMO, was it a foul on the keeper? Oh no his own player stood on his toe like a dipshit, so retake the corner

What the fuck is going on with the ref penalising an attacker in the box at a corner? Why is Jackson getting a talking to when the defender is wrapping his arms around him? Then a free kick given because the defender stood on the goalie’s foot? Absolute joke.

How unlucky that that didn't go in off the keeper?

Bit of pace stretching them. Have England got anyone that can do that in attack? Rashford? Gordon?
