Named by FIFA to officiate during the World Cup, the Somali referee 🇸🇴 Omar Artan was denied entry to U.S. territory

Due to his difficulties in obtaining a visa, he had benefited from the support of the Somali embassy in Nairobi, which notably enabled him to obtain a diplomatic passport

Insufficient for the American authorities, who immediately sent him back...

Would love FIFA to prove me wrong and step in. This world cup is a shambles. I've never been more disinterested in a world cup.

Makes trump and his policies look a bit of a twat given he's been giving it the big un that it's gonna be the "greatest world cup ever"
Unfortunately Donald for that you kinda have to be inclusive and non discriminatory.

Probably already been mentioned, but five rules being implemented for the World Cup
    • VAR can check corners
    • VAR can can review second bookings
    • You can be sent off for covering your mouth in a confrontational manner
    • If a Goalkeeper goes down injured, players cant go over to the technical area
    • Countdown to stop wasting, 5-secs to take a Goal Kick or a throw in, whilst 10-secs to be subbed off
Sorry, maybe I’m being dim, but I’m not sure what this one is supposed to be about?
No I'm not sure what its about either - I've never really seen it to be a contentious thing, as thought it was usually just done to avoid the media trying to work out whatever they're saying to each other - Happens in the majority of sport now, what with the media employing lip readers.
It’s not a problem if you’re talking to your teammates, it’s when you’re abusing an opponent.

I think the games most in danger of being stopped due to weather are the ones in Miami and Mexico.

The Canadian venues and Seattle will be fine, San Fran doesn't get hurricanes and storms anything like the cities on the Gulf of Mexico.

Atlanta, LA, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta all have roofs, and unless there's a major heatwave the other American stadiums are far enough North and Central to not really get affected by much.
San Francisco gets fog. It’ll be like Sam left on his own on the pitch all over again.

The Cote D’Ivoire jackets are crazy, I so want one. And full marks for laying into the jocks not arriving in kilts. https://www.instagram.com/reels/DZSnjnjItvp/

I can't blame you for thinking that given the things that have gone on:

    Insane ticket prices
    Referee refused visa
Iraq player held at airport for hours
Some Iran backroom staff and even the head of their FA refused visas
Iran forced to move base to Mexico and fly in and out of the US on matchdays.

However..........once the tournament begins a lot of this will be forgotten and i'm sure the tournament itself will end up being absolutely fine. There was a lot of talk before the Qatar world cup about how it would be shit, but it actually ended up a great tournament and i don't know a single person who went out there (myself included) that didn't enjoy it.

The thing about having the World Cup in north America is that football isn't something that any of the politicians in the USA know anything about.

    Except, perhaps... https://www.instagram.com/reel/DZQ1RHwxZVA/?igsh=YWc5YzQ3aTJtaXp0

You are correct there. However, FIFA doesn’t have to take the World Cup to the USA with its bizarre and frequently nonsensical entry policies. Even Russia in 2018 managed to avoid this kind of nonsense!

You are right but maybe when USA were appointed the two parties should have agreed criteria for individuals participating under blanket bans*.

Being appointed must have been the highlight of this guys life and it should have not been when he was arriving that he was rejected.

That said why could FIFA not just swapped him for a referee in Canada or Mexico!

*Of course it was originally decided before Trump 2.0

Well the issue with the first one is that the USA, Canada and Mexico were awarded it 8 years ago and there's no way to predict policy that far in advance.

The issue with placing him in Canada/Mexico is that all the referees are based in the USA to train together and analyse decisions etc. together. So there would be no infastructure for him to sit alone in Canada/Mexico for potentially 6 weeks.

    Good point about referees location.

Spent a week in San Diego last week and I appreciate it’s not a host city but you’d never even know a World Cup was happening. Not on TV, around airports, even chatting with people in bars etc. Complete lack of local interest.

They’ve got players in some of the best nations squads too. These are truly dark days.

I'm looking forwards to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles where there will be far more countries represented.

I wonder who will actually get in to compete.

US should have undergone their own “regime change” by then.  Hopefully, the games aren’t postponed due to civil war!

I think it would probably be different if they were hosting games but as they're not then it's probably not of that much interest to locals when the nearest games are 2-3 hours drive away in LA.

Also in the US right now both the NBA and NHL finals are ongoing, so i assume that is getting most of the sports coverage out there for now.

US elections are in November 2028 which will be the first chance for an official regime change.

It wasn’t on TV last week as it hasn’t started yet… you were in a non host city before the tournament began so probably not the fairest judgement point!

Soccer Football just doesn't register with that many Americans. A lot of them think the Superbowl is the biggest sporting event in the world but it actually only just scrapes into the top 10. The FIFA World Cup (men's and women's) both dwarf the viewing figures for the Superb Owl. As do the cricket and rugby world cups.

Both Qatar and Russia there were serious concerns beforehand that LGBT fans would face discrimination due to local laws. Both countries adapted their approaches and there was no problem. If the Yanks do similar I suspect people will rapidly forget the issues you've pointed out. If ICE were to start raiding the crowds looking for people to deport then it would be different, but we have no real evidence that they're actually willing to ruin their big event by doing that sort of thing.

I suspect the visa issues will lead to organisations having second thoughts about asking the US to host future big events that aren't already committed to. But that's a problem for the next president to face; the current one couldn't even stay awake for the basketball final so presumably doesn't care much either way.

The US will always get selected to host things because of the size of the country and it's infrastructure.

It has the Olympics in 2028 and the Rugby world cup in 2031

Iran are claiming that their ticket allocation has been withdrawn. Obviously I'd advise caution in taking that at face value, but if true it would have to mean that Iranian Americans were being refused tickets, given that there's known to be a visa ban that would mean Iranians living in Iran wouldn't ever have been able to go.

Meanwhile, at at least one stadium there's a potential for strike action from workers who seem to be in part demanding that ICE be refused access.

I'm not a fan of what's going on in the US, but I hope this isn't going to ruin things for even more fans who've paid huge amounts to go to this.

Because there is no world referees association or union to back him. They are all under FIFA's thumb, and Trump has bought control of FIFA via Infantino.
