Meanwhile England deemed not good enough to host a World Cup. What a farce.

FIFA despise England - probably more jealousy than anything else.

We are one of the few countries, maybe the only one, that could host a World Cup at 6 months notice. I firmly believe that, like The Open is played at the home of golf every 5 years or so, the World Cup should be played at the global home of football every 20 years or so. To have only hosted it once in nearly 100 years is a disgrace.

We couldn’t host it within Fifa’s silly requirements. We simply don’t have the grounds big enough because some (like Anfield) don’t fit regulation and you can only have one city that has two stadiums. Four of the stadiums you’d want to use are in London. Outside of that you’re left with Old Trafford, Villa Park and St James Park. That isn’t enough infrastructure for Fifa’s rules
Is that true about 2 grounds per city? How many cities does Qatar have?
I assume they found a loophole/bribed their way out. And I believe it isn’t 2 per city, only 1 city can have 2. So you couldn’t use both Manchester grounds AND two London ones

And Infantino’s only scheduled press conference has so far reached 20 minutes without him taking a single question from the floor

It's the press reporters that should be asking the questions.
How do you suggest they do that?

These are my final predictions...until I change my mind later today. An all Iberian final. Spain to win it all. England to the semi-finals on a largely easy path. Japan and Turkiye dark horses. It's all a bit chalk I think, but I also think with such a large field it's going to be chalk for the group stage and first round or two.
    Please, what is 'chalk'?

Edit: ignore me, just looked it up. How can I have got this old without having heard that before?

    (I'm 87, you know)
I follow yank sports, I'm in my fifties and I've never heard it either 😂
I’ve mainly heard it used on March Madness brackets
Ah, that explains it. I've never followed basketball really - because it's shite.

    Harsh - but true.
    I'm being facetious. A bit... 🤣

The modern game leaves me cold, but I can appreciate it for what it was a few decades ago. No argument that it's definitely bobbins now though
Like most of America I only really take notice once it is the playoffs.

Lost a bit of interest when they basically abandoned travelling.

Even watching my 15 year old play, I am amazed at what they get away with these days.

As someone who played football out there 20 years ago the participation and desire is there, but when a sport is the 5th most interest to the host, it just breeds complacency.

least with Qatar there was a blank canvas. It was competing with falcon racing ffs.

i hope when it starts it runs smoothly but everything up until now says otherwise.

Wouldn't need both - and OT is a shithole anyway.

    London - Wembley and Spurs
    Manchester - Ehtihad
    Newcastle - St James
    Leeds - Elland Road
    Liverpool - Hill Dickinson
    Birmingham - Villa Park

Throw in these for the lesser games:

    Nottingham - City Ground
    Derby - Pride Park
    Southampton - St Marys

What makes it worse is that they have a fascination with giving 3 country hosts(especially when it moves to 64 teams) so Scotland and wales would boost our bid even more.

Hilariously with Scotland it'll be held at Hampden which is a dump and not either of the two better grounds in Glasgow.

No idea what you have against Mexico, Estadio Azteca is a thing of beautiful, especially back in 1970. Proper footballing country too.

So if you’re gonna collab a bid you got Celtic park 🤢 and the millennium stadium, and I’ve got nothing against Mexico other than I don’t think the biggest football tournament in the world should be hosted more than the many better alternatives. You’ve said one stadium, after their top 4 now (no idea what the capacity was when they hosted the two before) you’re into the 40k mark, with an infrastructure nothing compared to ours.

4th most now..... and it is almost identical to baseball now tied for 3rd. Ice hockey has plunged in recent years. F1 a big grower due to DTS as well.

But an American is 40% less likely to follow football than the average global individual which does show relatively how far behind the rest of the world they are.

Normally I look forward to the World Cup finals but not this time. Why has the USA got it again so soon after having it before? Why has it been expanded to so many teams? Extended half times, so as to pack in as much advertising revenue as possible. Etc, etc, etc.

I really can’t be arsed to watch this overblown farce.
So soon? It's been 32 years!! For reference, the shortest gap is 16 years (Mexico 1970 & 1986). Germany was also 32 years

Much as I disagree with another totalitarian 😉 state like the USA being given most of the world cup, it's Mexico's third bite of the apple, the last being only sixteen years after the first.
Thanks for both of your replies.

I can accept that the America’s have right to host the World Cup, given the enthusiasm of the fans and the success of teams such as Brazil, Argentina and Uruguayan in previous World Cups. But the USA? It is not one of the two most popular sports in that country. It may be 32 years since The USA hosted the tournament but it is 36 years since Italy, three times winners, hosted the tournament, 44 years since Spain, former winners, have hosted the tournament and 60 years since England, former winners, hosted the tournament. In all of those countries there is greater enthusiasm for football than the USA.

I get your point but they rotate the tournament across different continents and you can't host a world cup in North America without the US involved.

The last 5 world cups have been Africa, South America, Europe, Asia and now North America.
In that case, shouldn't it go to Australia?  There is no rule at FIFA - only money counts.
I don't think Australia has enough suitable stadiums to host it.
Utter bollocks. The MCG is one of the biggest stadia in the world. Sydney not much smaller.

    Half a dozen over 50k.

The MCG and SCG are huge but not ideal for football unless it's Aussie Rules.

But there are half a dozen other NRL and RU stadiums with 50k plus.

No Phillips or Henderson bollocks here.

    Anderson and Rice are class

For the 2026 World Cup, 16 stadiums will be used.

Australia currently has 9 stadiums with more than 40k capacity. NZ (if they co-hosted - has one, but Wellington's can be upgraded to 40k with temporary seatings). So that's a total of 11 stadiums.
You then have another 4 or 5 stadiums across Australia and NZ that currently hold 30 to 35k that potentially can be upgraded to hold the min 40k that FIFA require. Could theoretically be 16 stadiums.

Portugal aside it’s the best midfield in the tournament. 2 world class midfielders and guy who is
about to be sold for 100m plus.

    It’s very promising.
