I am going to repeat my question, as I think my ranting on about the "penalty" probably sent a few people to sleep before I got to it...

On another note, I thought I heard the commentator say that from corners or free kicks shoving in the box before the ball was kicked will be reviewed, but action will only be taken if it's decided the attacking team are at fault? Did I hear right?

By action do they mean a free-kick to the defending team? If so a defender has pretty much cart blanche to do what they like before the ball is in play? No doubt they will be giving the free kick for 'unnecessary roughness'!

The version I heard is that VAR will be able to disallow a goal if a forward scored thanks to a gap created by a defender being shoved out of the way before the corner was taken. Because those shoves are before the ball's in play they can't lead to a free kick and currently can't be part of a VAR review.

I'm not sure whether to see this as a lovely gesture of solidarity or as magnificent trolling of FIFA, but it is being reported that UEFA have obtained permission from CAF to appoint Omar Artan as referee for the European Super Cup in August.

We'd easily be able to host a 16 stadium world cup, especially if we have 12 years to plan it.

Straight off the bat you'd have:
    Wembley
    White Hart Lane
    Principality
    Etihad
    Anfield
    Celtic Park
    St James' Park
    Aviva
    Stadium Of Light
    New Birmingham Stadium

That's 10 grounds, ready to go, all above 40k.

Given Qatar had all their stadiums in one city pretty much, and London is fucking huge, they should allow us Emirates, West Ham, maybe even Twickenham.

You'd then probably see one of the Sheffield teams, Leeds, Bristol, Southampton, Coventry, Forest and a couple of others look to get in on the act and upgrade their stadiums for it too, it's easily done.

In that scenario, personally I’d put Evertons new ground way above Anfield in the pecking order.

The relationship between FIFA and UEFA is toxic already, here's a bit more poison

Leeds have a big expansion plan about to start, while Forest also have an expansion nearly ready to go. Both would easily be ready in time.

I  suspect that the biggest obstacle to an England  bid ( Or  indeed a joint UK bid) to host the World Cup any time soon, is that there is an ingrained objection here to corruption. Whereas in Russia, Qatar and the good old USA………………

And there are advance plans for constructing a new Old Trafford (New Trafford)

If Infantino had balls - he doesn't, but suspend disbelief and read on -  he would appoint Omar Artan to referee all of the USA group games, and tell sides that if games don't go ahead, both sides will take nil points from group games.

Matthew Mcconaughey did the intro for US TV. No mention of time being a flat circle, of this place being like the memory of a town, or any other classics from True Detective.

Rebecca Lowe does the pre match with Theirry Henry, who is immediately incredibly charming, Zlatan, who is Zlatan but I bet will be good value, and Alexei Lalas, who remains unfortunate.

Welcome to the Great American Beer Hall in Medford, Massachusetts. First time I’ve been here although it’s less than 2 miles from my house. Looks like they’re an official viewing location. Huge inside, massive bar, good choice of beer plus the usual bar food.  Waiting for Mexico / South Africa, crowds a bit sparse, but it is 2pm on a workday.

  • Well, Opening Ceremony is self indulgent Mexican 'songs' and 'dance'. Not sitting anywhere near the memorable charts. Only had about 10 years to plan. Bring on Diana Ross and some larger goal posts, width, not height. Why is it not Trump Land, in English tee hee

That opening ceremony, what a load of rubbish. They’ve had years to get that right and they’ve done it all in foreign.

Sithole in the South African midfield is an interesting name for the commentators to get right

Wonder if the South Africa players will sing on their way out to warm up. It’s pretty cool.
  • Lovely Connery quote/story. What was your best shag? 'X , in Parish, up the Arsh'. He named the lady (a well known singer)

I've got a block of meetings that start at the top of the hour so I'm going to leave you all and watch it (hopefully without spoilers) on delay. Enjoy this feast of football! I'll check back in tomorrow for Canada and USA! USA! USA!

Do we want South Africa to win to try and avoid playing Mexico in Mexico later on ?
