Yes, that was a bizarrely late VAR intervention. Surely VAR should have told the ref to review the decision before the free kick was taken?cafc_harry said:Fair to say I have absolutely no idea what VAR is in this tournament. Almiron wins a free kick for a clear dive and Ream is booked, instead of reviewing there and then they allow the free kick to be taken, leading to nothing and another break in play. They then review for ‘mistaken identity’ and bring it back to the free kick, reversing the booking for Ream and booking Almiron. I have no problem with that at all in principle, but surely once the free kick is taken that’s a whole new phase of play, what if Paraguay scored? Can you then go back and look at the free kick which should’ve been reviewed in the first place?0 -

BBC and I guess other media outlets can't stop going on about the Scotland match being at 2am. It's almost as if no one has ever been awake at that time. They have doctors and nutritionist giving their advice, callers and pundits talking about it as if they are being tasked with the night watch in the trenches and there's even pages on their website dedicated of how to cope and stay awake for it.13

I think the lack of games during ‘our’ day / evening is gonna hold the tournament back a bit over here.Callumcafc said:So disappointing that there’s such a long gap between the games yesterday and today. Really doesn’t feel like the tournament is here yet.
They likely want the first US game to involve the US team but there was nothing stopping them having an extra game in Monterrey yesterday and in Vancouver today.
Tomorrow the fun starts…Once we have two games a day at decent times I think will get more traction.Nothing same looking up the results when wake up in morning.2 -
Thought USA looked impressive but Paraguay looked awful so hard to really compare. Turkey will be a bigger test but they'll quite possibly both be through by then anyway5

Thanks for the no spoilers link above. USA impressive from the highlights and some superb finishes - our Charlie boy has a lot of work to do to get into that squad in future.4

It is a fantastic stadium. Too bad it surrounded by a dense layer of smog which makes you feel like you are in some dystopian matchMrOneLung said:

yeah, I'm a fan of this. it was a clear and obvious error and is exactly what var should be forCallumcafc said:I did not expect VAR “mistaken identity” rule to be used to overturn a yellow card and instead book an attacker for diving, but I do like it.3 -
I’ve been thinking about this more. It’s going to be so hard to judge any teams quality until the knockouts. Will make for an odd tournamentfenaddick said:Thought USA looked impressive but Paraguay looked awful so hard to really compare. AAjr is going to a Scots bar up town, got to be there before 11pm. That’s at least three hours of drinking before the game starts.Karim_myBagheri said:BBC and I guess other media outlets can't stop going on about the Scotland match being at 2am. That's my home city you're talking about! (LA, not Inglewood specifically) The smog is good for the lungs and the constitution. It makes you work for your breath, which is good because it's too easy to breathe in far too many places.Bostonaddick said:

We were watching last night and when they showed a panorama of the city I went "ah, the views of home" and my girlfriend went "is that smog?!?!" She's from rural Kansas, bless.
Yeah, USA looked really good. Namely, they looked like a Pochetino team. I'm not a big USMNT guy but I was impressed. The first XI is decent. Not great, but decent. But they absolutely buzzed around the pitch both on and off the ball and their movement created nightmares for Paraguay. Paraguay were poor, but I definitely think some of that was the US being good.
I have the US going out to Iran in the first knockout round but after last night I regret that a bit.
So up for it today. I'm going back to bed for a bit. Footie here kicks off at noon. Excited to see Lyndon Dykes hopefully play for Scotland tonight.7 -

Swap Brazil and Spain around and you have my answerCallumcafc said:Saw this online and thought it worth sharing on here.
Which team has the best midfield trio?
England: Rice, Anderson, Bellingham
Portugal: Vitinha, Neves, Fernandes
France: Tchouameni, Rabiot, Cherki
Brazil: Guimaraes, Casemiro, Paqueta
Spain: Pedri, Rodri, Fabian Ruiz
I think I know my choice but wondering what the brains on here are saying.0 -

In the summer they get May Grey and June Gloom.
But it’s not smog - it’s the marine layer. Boiling hot desert air meets the relatively cool pacific influenced air and the result is fog, haze, and grey skies till mid afternoon. But people often confuse it for smog.
Got to LA any time from end July onwards and it’s back to blue sky / scorchio. Go in the autumn and winter and it’s crystal clear every day1
