New Premier League rules coming in have forced their hand.
Every club in the top tier must operate a Cat 1, 2 or 3 academy from 2024-25 onwards.
They will start with a Cat 4 academy this season after closing their Cat 2 academy in 2016.

They could solve the problem by getting relegated.11

It’ll be interesting to see what they do. In a way running with the bare minimum would be a bigger waste of time than investing in it and moving up a category or two.

Actually if they start at tier 4 and move to tier 3, it's the other way around and we'll steal their good youth for next to nothing, as that's how the tiering system works, and why we are pushing so hard for tier 1addick1956 said:That means they will steal our yoof by offering to pay the family energy bill by way of an inducement.4 -
Looking it up, Cat 4 is much like what they are doing anyway, as unlike Cat 1-3, it's for U17 upwards only. Cat 3 will be a massive leap, as they'll have to start from scratch with recruitment and coaches

There are 4 categories of Academy. Category 1 to 3 Academies register players from the U9 age group through to professionals whereas the Category 4 model is a late development model operating from the U17 age group upwards. Category 1 is the highest status of Academy.

I'm fairly sure they ditched their academy as an economy measure when they had to finance their excellent new stadium.

Those players would still have to be willing to leave a Premier League academy for a League 1 one, not going to happen. Tier 1 is obviously a positive because we get more money for players who depart, but it's not going to be the game changer that people think IMO. Ultimately, are players like Beadle and Palmer going to stay because we are a Cat 1 club?sam3110 said:

No, but it means we get more money for them if they decide to move on. Similarly players in a Cat 3 academy, regardless of what tier the parent club are in, aren't going to have the same level of coaching and facilities available to them compared to a Cat 1 academy. That's kind of the point.cafcfan1990 said:

So you say will they be willing to leave a Premier Academy for a League 1 one? If they have any sense they will, because in Academy levels, we'll be the highest level and Brentford's will be the third level.0 -
Financially, we have to spend more money to retain Cat 1 status so I'm not sure it's worth it to be honest. We'll get a bit more if one leaves but we'd need one to leave every season to cover the extra costs.sam3110 said:

I get your point about Cat 1 having better facilities and coaching, but the Premier League clubs will still have the spending power. Why would a promising 15/16 year old leave Brentford for Charlton when the professional contract on offer shortly after will be much less. It's just not going to happen.0 -
Brentford's Academy has been awarded Category One status by the Premier League following a thorough audit from the Professional Game Academy Audit Company (PGAAC).From the start of the 2026/27 season, the club’s Academy will operate at Category One level, the highest possible under the Elite Player Performance Plan. This standard has been reached just four years after the club reopened its Academy.

So they got rid of it to save money to get promotion, then make a new academy and get to category 1 within 4 years because they are now in the Premier League. What a load of bollox.3

Isnt it a requirement to have a Cat.1 Academy as a Premier League side now?1
-
Think it was more that they were (and are) very data led. The data suggested the couple of million every year spent on having however many age groups in academy was better spent on the 'B team' they brought in instead - that was made up of players in their early 20s released from PL clubs, clubs abroad etc.Crusty54 said:I'm fairly sure they ditched their academy as an economy measure when they had to finance their excellent new stadium.
Don't bother completing with say ten other London clubs for youngsters and then train them for years, let other clubs train them and hope you pick up ones they were wrong to release.
So the money was still spent, just on the B team rather than an academy.1 -

No AFC Bournemouth doesn't have one, and Brentford doesn't till next season.1 -

It is a requirement of a WSL club (from next season) to have a women academy. In terms of cat 1 see my answer above.*- This is clearly thinking about the long term.0 -
Well run, ambitous and succesful club.Crispywood said:

Another reason why we should be going for cat 1 ASAP0 -
I thought clubs got given a few years leeway to get things setup - But I must be wrong if Bournemouth don't have one, as they've surely been back in the Premier League long enough now for that to have applied.JustFloydRoad said:ForeverAddickted said:Isnt it a requirement to have a Cat.1 Academy as a Premier League side now?

Would assume Bournemouth wouldn't pass until this season when their Training Ground was actually built. No way they were getting Cat 1 before.ForeverAddickted said:

Considering we’re already spending 2M a year to run the academy surely we aren’t far off Cat 1 where it’s a very realistic goal this summerHenry Irving said:

It is a requirement of all Prem clubs to have at least a category 3 academy.JustFloydRoad said:ForeverAddickted said:Isnt it a requirement to have a Cat.1 Academy as a Premier League side now?

Probably around three million pounds a year could achieve it, plus what ever the cost of expanding the facilities at the ground.Crispywood said:
