Charlton Athletic vs Stockport County
Saturday 26th November 2022 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Lee Swabey
Introduction
Well we're finally down one cup competition... Prior to this week, the Addicks found themselves in the novelty position of still having an interest in all competitions this season - Tuesday night however that all changed with a young and inexperienced Charlton side losing on the South Devon coast in the EFL Trophy... This Saturday we welcome League Two side: Stockport County to the Valley for the 2nd Round of the FA Cup.
The Opposition
Name: Stockport County (League Two) | Manager: Dave Challinor
Ground: Edgeley Park
Previous Round: Stockport County 4-0 Swindon Town
Kidderminster Harriers | Boston United | York City
These ex-League sides all have one thing in common with Stockport County and that is their exploits in the National League North - Stockport at the turn of the decade in 2009-10 were sitting pretty in League One, it was a season that saw them relegated, but little did anyone at Edgeley Park imagine what would happen next - Relegation after relegation was the summary, two years after facing Charlton in that League One campaign, and the Hatters were out of the Football League... another three years later and they were relegated to the National League North, where they would remain until 2018-19 when they finally returned to what is effectively the top table of Non-League Football.
Last season would then witness a dramatic battle between Stockport and Hollywood... We of course know the story of Wrexham FC, but having led the National League for so long, it dramatically came to the final day of the season - Wrexham would need something special to overhaul the Hatters, and it was a task too far - Stockport returned to the Football League after a decade away
As for returning to the EFL... Well their campaign has been a slow burner, yet has potential with Stockport sitting in mid-table, this though isn't the Premier League, our opponents this Saturday sit just six points from the Play-Offs... It wont be a shock if we see a sudden return to League One, in similar fashion as to how they left it in the first place.
Fun Fact: Charlton's 2nd Round opponents in both the League Cup and FA Cup defeated Swindon Town on route to the next round...
Charlton Team News
Well there doesnt appear to be much disappointment surrounding the absence of Jayden Stockley for the next three games - The club captain received a delayed red card after an off the ball incident at Port Vale on Saturday, meaning Ben Garner must now make further changes up top.. It surely means that Chuks Aneke will earn a rare start, or Daniel Kanu will get another run out, having scored his first senior goal on Tuesday evening.
Elsewhere and you'd expect to see a strong Addicks line-up, with the club Management hoping for a big tie for the 3rd Round

You can't start Chucks so Kanu must start.
Or we replicate Spain and play six midfielders and no forwards.5 -

Does anyone know if Thameslink will be running trains between Dartford and Charlton on Saturday? National Rail journey planner says yes but will the station staff be on strike and therefore forcing both stations to be closed? Have tried ringing customer service but usual “all are operators are busy” baloney and can’t get through. TIA0

If we play Kirk and Kanu up front we will struggle to get out of our own half !1

How badly our squad has been hit! Only 3 players in that starting 11 who would be first choices to start and only 1 or at most 2 on the bench. And not because anybody has been rested.1
-
We should have enough on paper for a league 2 side and Stockley out of the side is no bad thing at the minute, but this is the FA Cup and Stockport will smell an upset. The narrowest of wins here 2-1 Payne and Chuks.1

The lack of sufficient quality squad depth is really biting us in the arse.

Thats another factor that'll hurt you now if you end up with an injury crisis, as you wont get rescued by the fact of having a large squad compared with previous seasons.1 -
A must win.1

It's like @happyvalley and his comfortable 4-0 home win.
Mind you I haven't seen him write it for a while.
Are you still on here, Mr Happy?

Clubs know these players are more vulnerable to injury and need to be managed ..... but it's a way to get a player with higher quality into the squad at an affordable cost.

Got my 6 tickets tonight and gutted to see ticket sales are horrendous0

0-9 to The County.0

I would try something a bit different because we are going to have to at some stage anyway.
Back 4 picks its self. Its a toss up in goal, if they are both fit.
I would go with a front 6 of
JFC
Dobson Fraser
Kirk
JRS CBT
Playing JFC as the quater back would improve our passing out from the back no end and Dobson is the one with the energy to go box to box and might well get on the end of something.1 - Sponsored links:

We put out a team with at least seven recognised first choice starters and Kanu in front of a crowd of less than 5k, we lose, Garner shoots his mouth off again and gets the tin tack. Cue meltdown.Alternative scenario - we play with no recognised centre forward with CBT, Kirk and sundry midfielders watching Man City videos all week, we win 7-0, Stockley is never seen again and Thomas pats his wallet contentedly.Take your pick playmates.0
-
Nothing less than a convincing win is acceptable. I hope Garner takes it seriously and we run out easy winners. I think confidence is fragile. A win is essential and a struggle just won’t do.1
-
Hoping for a win and a top club draw for the next round.0

The league cup run is the only good thing about this season so far. I hope they can replicate in the FA Cup. Injuries are impacting us, so will be tough, but we need a win, so should go for it good and proper0
-
need to win this then get a Prem team in the 3rd round .. Stockpot's (ahhhh Bisto) recent form is decent, this will not be that easy especially as our striker cupboard is empty
CAFC 2 v Stockport County 00 -
With the injuries and Stockly out. Can only see a young side playing and 2-0 loss.1
-
This will be a struggle but I hope we sneak through, 2-1 to the forwardless Addicks.0
