Mahmokd did well for England before injury. He has that extra pace. If he's fit he should be back in the squad.
Such a shame that when we actually have a crop of fast bowlers to get excited about they all get injured. Archer Wood Stone Overton Mahmood would be a serious group of quicks challenging for the side.
They're injured because they bowl that fast. The human body isn't meant to do that. It's the same with baseball pitchers. They keep blowing out their elbows. Someone like Shoaib Akhtar who keeps it going for as many as 46 Tests is the exception, not the rule, and I bet he wasn't fully fit for at least half of them
The Aussie quicks seem pretty bullet proof when it comes to Ashes series. The likes of Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc have played in loads of Ashes matches.
Lee had a biometrically perfect action, but he wasn't much above 90mph most of his career. Starc is similar. Johnson had a bit more pace than either, and a lot more injury problems too
johnson was a one trick pony (only really getting going on fast aussie wickets, coupled with his slinging action made him unplayable), brett lee was fast and a better all round bowler.
Had the pleasure of meeting Harry Tector's dad, Heatley, seven years ago when Harry's younger brother, Tim, was playing for Leinster against Kent in a cricket festival at Taunton. Heatley is a lovely man and commentates about cricket on radio. Harry could go a long way in the game too.
Just seen that footage Sky have just shown of Bairstow keeping in The Blast. As Sangakkara inferred he does look somewhat cumbersome moving on that left leg. Given that keeping can be as much about the movement of the feet as it is the ability to catch that would seriously worry me. We shall see soon enough how restricted he is compared to Foakes as the obvious comparison.

I said this first week of the season. Being fit and able to bat in tests is one thing. Being fir and able to keep for 5 tests pretty nuch back to back is another. Atherton said on the sky comms for one of the surry county champ games early in the season that there is no way after that injury he would pick bairstow to keep for the summer.
When he's at it he is my favourite bowler for England in my lifetime. That spell in the morning session against the Aussies a few years back was something to behold. I was there and I barely touched my drink during it. Which is saying something.
If Leach is brought on half way through the morning in The Ashes, do we think that the Aussies will try to hit him out of the park? Stokes is a reluctant bowler, for obvious reasons, which will put a bit of pressure on Leach to buy us time in between the stints of Robinson, Anderson and Broad.

Stokes claims he is fit to bowl a full quota now. Of course time will tell.

I'll only believe that when he actually bowls a decent length spell, say 6 overs, at a good pace.

Said in qn interview he is back to 2019/20 levels of fitness. We will see how true that is. Especially with 5 tests pretty much back to back.

Appreciate that and saw that he says they have found ways to "manage" the situation. It always concerns me when I read that word rather than an operation to sort it once and for all. That suggests that there isn't one he can have and that it is a chronic injury as a result of the repetitive nature of the pressure on that left knee when bowling. As you say, time will tell but his ability to bowl a dozen overs a day could make all the difference.
Am I the only one who has a bit of a dislike, effective or not, of a plan that is purely based around banging it in short? Much prefer it as an element of surprise rather than a negative run reducing and potential trap rewarding option.

Certainly not a fan of it before lunch on the first day at 70-4.

i've never liked short pitched bowling... but that might be because i'm 5'9, fast medium at a push and a number 11 bat!
