Across the last two Ashes series, England have scored 350+ twice. Both in 2019.

    #1: first innings at Edgbaston - 374
    #2: second innings at Headingley - 362/9

If you offered me 350 before the start of the day today I’d have taken it..

This is being done deliberately to signify a mentality shift

Are you suggesting we should try scoring less runs?

The fact is, as the saying goes, we won't know what a good score is 'til both sides have batted on here. And I do believe that much will hinge on how and how many overs Moeen and Stokes can bowl. Unless Anderson, Broad and Robinson can skittle them of course.

There is, of course, one other aspect to this. Us scoring quickly means that the Aussies won't need to do so in order to get a result. Whereas doing so has always worked in our favour under Bazball, we might, inadvertently, have actually bought them time.

When was the last time we got 400 in an Ashes series ? 2015  ?

Root kissed his helmet after reaching his century, which shows how flexible he is.

The answer might well still be today.  Why you moaning that we haven't scored 400 when we still could?

This is now England’s highest Ashes score since 2017 when Cook scored that monster double hundred at the MCG.

We're sneaking towards about par I reckon.

    Not amazing but decent.

Put 350 on the board before we are all out.
Then have a short spell at them and get a couple out.
    Ideal opening day.
    Part one achieved.
    Now for part two.

    With Root smashing 6s?!

We could have got another 40 or 50 easily there.

Dont agree with that. Would have carried on batting & tried to get another 40 or 50.

4 overs this evening is neither here nor there. Unlikely to pick up a wicket & could have done with more runs. This isnt day 4 trying to engineer a result ffs.

I'll take 383 from where we were at 175-5 though.

Get the Aussies in after a long day in the field. Don’t take your foot off the pedal.

Thought we'd motor on and try to get close to 430/450
